I played a lot of Timesplitters but I don't understand the big obsession
Because Timesplitters didn't really introduce anything new? It was fine but hardly revolutionary, whereas Goldeneye and Halo both caused major shifts to the genre.

I could be talking out my ass, but solid controls, game modes that actually made multiplayer more than a "first to 25 wins", gunplay was pretty good, and a lot of the mechanics like jumping, regenerative health/shields, driving, and a few others made it a solid title for its time.

I think it got people breaking the FPS mold a little bit.
Regen health and vehicles is a big part, but choosing weapons so you always knew what you had and didn't need to think/switch to more appropriate weapons, moving grenades and melee to their own separate buttons and for console, introducing us to system link so you could play more than 4 players on a console was a big deal.
