depends on the melee and magic systems in the game.
I prefer melee over magic because in any real-time game (Dark Souls, Dragon's Dogma, Tales, etc) melee is usually more involved, whereas magic is usually just standing far away and casting. Sure it looks really awesome in Dragon's Dogma, but you're not actually doing much. It's a lot of waiting.
In turn-based games it really doesn't matter that much and I'll probably just use whatever works better/seems cooler.
Melee in action games.
Magic in slower stuff like turn-based RPG's.
