That or his moves involve shitloads of powerups. Since a lot of mario power ups are either projectiles or flight, I'd say he'd play like some sort of link with a lot more athleticism
maybe a hybrid of the two would be a douche-bag edge-guard king with hammers and meteor footstools
in that way it could ironically outline mario's dominance over the video game industry that pretty much negates a chance for many other platformers to succeed or try their own thing, his fighting style would prevent recovery, just like his company did for sega
