How can you guys stand the controls of this game? I want to play the MGS series. I really do. But the controls are so godawful it's unbearable.
I'm trying to go for a nonlethal run, but the aiming is busting my balls.

In case it isn't obvious, MGS 3. Gonna go for a chronological playthrough because why not.

Dumbass.
>>
I just recently played through MGS1 and 2, and about an hour of 3. After MGS2, I thought I'd give it one more chance to cut the absolutely fucking stupid and redundant writing. I want to be able the save the game without a lecture. I want clear, concise dialogue that is hopefully also imaginative and creative. Instead I get the same, often pointless shit repeated in different ways for so long. After being told it was to be a stealth mission and I should avoid being seen about the 8th time and having only 2 minutes of gameplay in the first 40-50 minutes of the game, I dropped it.

MGS2 was an abomination. What are dead cell? Why do they have powers, specifically Vamp? Why did I need to hear from 3 people an explanation as to why EE is afraid of water? Anything that is considered to have some sort of emotional weight is slathered on thick until it becomes laughable.

I don't get it. I just don't get it. Why do people like these games so much? They have some fun set pieces with interesting gadgets which aren't overused throughtout the game. That's a plus. But it doesn't make up for the myriad of crap. It's basically soppy melodrama dialogue and cutscenes broken up every now and then by gameplay, the mechanics of which are clunky.

The 3DS version has the best controls if you're using CPP

The year is 1998, you are 11 years old. You have a Playstation. The last game you played with voice acting was Resident Evil. You are too young to even understand that THAT voice acting was bad.

Now here comes MGS1. Graphically it looks better than almost anything else you've ever played. It sports a gameplay type that you've never seen before. There is voice acting; tons of it! It's like a movie! Even better than a movie; you have all of these supporting cast members that you can talk to whenever you want, sometimes about random shit. It's almost like they're people.

You have lots of time and not many other games. So you play the shit out of this game. You notice that it's made with love; there are all of these little details everywhere, easter eggs, secrets, jokes. Hidden in boss fights, in mechanics, in random places.

You bond with Snake and with Snake's various relationships. 3 years later it's 2001 you are 14 and it's MGS2. Again one of the best looking games out at the time. You still can't really tell that the voice acting is mediocre, like a dubbed anime. You love dubbed anime.

Aside from the fact that you can't be Snek (which infuriates you), the game basically delivers everything it did the first time. Shit gets really weird and confusing and you don't understand it well but you still have a great time. You play it a bunch of times. The world still has that same rich feel to it and it's familiar.

I don't think it's a timeless thing anon. I am 28 now. There's no way that I could play through MGS now. I am much more critical of acting, much quicker to hit skip. I do not waste time rummaging through all of the little details, and I rarely play anything more than once. The mechanics are all old now, simple, dated.

If you don't "get" it, it's because you missed the boat. Most of us that are honest with ourselves are just on a nostalgia trip.
>>
>>319733448
>I don't think it's a timeless thing anon

And you're wrong given how many people played MGS for the first time in the last 4 years with the Legacy Collection and it getting continued lauding.
>>
>>319732741
I doubt that.

I LOVE post-modern, meta shit like that and I'm a proponent of the potential of video games as art, so I'm very curious on playing through MGS2 again. I also need to play through the first game, never have; I've only played through TTS.

I don't doubt that I'm probably not going to enjoy the games much but we'll see. Next time I play through MGS2 will be my definitive take on it. Last time I played through it, I didn't enjoy it much, but then maybe that was b/c I was depressed?

I plan on maybe playing through MGS4 and V eventually too.
>>
>>319733448
Nigga, I was ten years old. Literally all I had was an NES, and Resident Evil on PSX.

Even I knew the voice acting was bad and I had no proper frame of reference to compare it to. You're fucking dense.
>>
>>319733730

You don't actually know what post-modern means if you immediately associate it with "meta shit." Is this a false-flag or something?

The problem with this is that Kojima is a hack and has absolutely no experience, training or authority to be commenting on the philosophical aspects of video games as an art form, When he attempts to do so it comes off as amateur and awkward, similar to when your drunk roommate rants about how jews did wtc.
>>
>>319732509
My mate just played them in release order, so I figured it'd be interesting to play in chronological and compare what we thought about it.
Of course I don't expect you to get exactly why I decided that, since you have no friends.

Was that just on you, Anon? Weren't there tons of stealth games before MGS?

This is how I feel, only I actually do play through games multiple times. It's the only way to really judge a video game. If a game is worth playing through more than once or twice, or even five times, then it is an amazing game.

I actually spend more time these days playing games I've already beaten than new games, generally.
>>
>>319733941
>commenting on the philosophical aspects of video games as an art form

It's a good thing Kojima has never talked about video games being some sort of platform for art or elevating the status of video games. It seems to me you don't actually know what MGS2 is about and you're just shitposting.
>>
>>319733853
I know po-mo doesn't necessarily mean 'meta' as well, but MGS2 is legitimately post-modern. Fuck off.

>but MGS2 is legitimately post-modern

And the people who keep trumpeting this shit from their keyboards are grating and annoying because they don't actually talk about the stuff MGS2 has contributed to the conversation about memes. Namely, that things on the internet will be around forever for new generations to look at.

My goal was just to help the anon understand how a fan might think and feel rather than justify why X or Y thing is right or wrong. But yeah there were other stealth games before MGS. Like MG lel.

To be fair --and maybe I'm just a pleb in my ripe old age-- I don't ever really hear about that 8 or 16 bit stealth game that was so good. I'm not sure I'd use the word "tons" to describe it.

>>319735000
Tenchu and Thief actually both came out the same year as MGS. Didn't have a PC but I was all over Tenchu too... although that game is a different story.
>>
>>319735348

Well no. True enough he wanted to get into films, but once he got into video games he saw the potential for them and wanted to make video games. You can hear it from the man himself at his BAFTA lecture.

>>319735405
>You mean its analysis of social control through media, how information is filtered to the masses through said media, and how different groups take whatever they want from said media to further their own agendas?

No. That's part of it, but that's not Kojima's contribution. That has been around since the bible was created. The fact that memes used to be passed to one another from person-to-person can now be passed via forums, chatrooms, etc. and that they stay there pretty much forever. Allowing people to self-indulge, (stay inside their little ponds). You could make the argument that television and films did this, but the show and the film can end. The internet you can boot up and you can find any sort of information you want with a few mouseclicks.

It is up to the audience to interpret whether all this as harmful or okay, and what we should do about it.
>>
>>319735728
>My goal was just to help the anon understand how a fan might think and feel rather than justify why X or Y thing is right or wrong. But yeah there were other stealth games before MGS. Like MG lel.

The entire gameplay part of MGS3 is a mess. That's why I don't understand how anyone can say it's the best Metal Gear, when the story is unanimously agreed to be best in 1, and the gameplay is best in 5. It doesn't have the "best" of anything.

Kojima had some good ideas with 3, but the execution was sloppy and amateurish (which is weird, considering he's a perfectionist). The camo system is a clunky mess due to it being restricted to the normal pause menu. The stamina system is good, but Boss's stamina bar depletes far too quickly, something MGS4 rectified. The healing system is retarded. There's a reason he ditched it.

I can't fathom how he could think mapping sneaking to the d-pad was a good idea, and not only that, but he saw how slow Boss walks and said "yep, looks good." The soldiers walk faster than you. MGS1, 2, 4, and 5 all had better stealth mechanics, with 4 and 5 having the best. Not to mention the other issues (30 FPS, that retarded camera, radar being useless). It's a good game, but a weak Metal Gear.

I started with 3 as well and I just dreaded it. Then my friend said that I should stay with it because it's the shit, so I just got myself through the silly voice, the shitty camera angle, the loooooooong ass cutscenes and I grew to like it.

However, had I started with 1 instead of 3, I'm sure I would have enjoyed it a lot more. MGS is like The Witcher series, trying to jump in on the latest entry with zero knowledge of the previous games just isn't a good idea at all.

If MGS5 was your first Metal Gear Solid game, it should probably be your last. If you start playing MGS1-MGS3 after that you're just setting yourself up for disappointment. You're not going to understand the story any better and the gameplay is nothing like what you experienced in MGS5.

I won't ever shit on anyone for not playing the original games first, you guy's get enough of that, I'm just hoping you take my advice so you don't end up wasting your time trying to experience what guys who have been playing MGS since 1998 have experienced.

why? it's your first time playing the game, why not explore all the tools? Play around, be creative, don't lock yourself to the biggest cancer of the series that is the tranquilizer gun. Please, if you take any advice from this thread, take this.

Metal gear encourages you to try stuff, because you often get rewarded in quirky ways, unlike in other stealth-action games. For the love of god use your whole inventory and arsenal at your disposal, otherwise you'll be sitting here creating a thread at the end saying stupid shit like "uugh, the game is so boring". Going back to MGS3 was one of the few times I'd ever been angry with a game.

The game was so fucking slow and tedious. Pausing and unpausing the game every five-ten seconds to heal and change camo is one of the most tedious things ever put into a video game. How we all just accepted that shit when it came out is beyond me.
