Once a game in a certain genre is positioned in a place of certain status, other games in the genre will be ignored. Said game doesn't have to be the best at the current time, just solid and have gathered an insane amount of attention in the past.
The popularity of Street Fighter 2, Quake 3 Arena, Starcraft, Dota, Team Fortress 2, etc. killed any possible competition they'd have in the future.
It's why companies like EA or Valve buy studios instead of trying to compete directly with them. It's why kickstarters capitalize on the popularity of past titles.
I'm not expert but I'd say branding > marketing > compulsion loops > aesthetics > mechanics when it comes to vidya sales.

The only problem that I can nitpick with SART comparing it with MK8 is that it's not a good party game. If you're good at SART, the friends that you invite over that never played before, they have no fucking chance to win, while with MK8 they still have a chance.

This is EXACTLY how I feel about playing All Stars. It's an amazing game that just isn't welcoming to a lot of players given its oddly strange depth for a kart racer. It wouldn't bother me so much if netplay was actually decent, so I'm stuck constantly playing single player. Not that it isn't too bad in itself since the CPU is pretty challenging.

I love how Sega managed to Out Rainbow road Rainbow Road in both visuals and music with Race of Ages, and Visually with Galactic parade too. The designs in this game are great.

Race of Ages visually is kind of a big polygonal mess.
It feels like they just threw a bunch of spare 3D assets at it. It's the only track that it really feels kind of rushed to me, even though I get what they were trying to do with it.
I wish SASRT's online multiplayer was still alive. That first couple of weeks was great because they forgot to give people an option for PTT so anyone with a mic plugged in was heard throughout the game. Got to hear some people ragequit and they probably weren't even aware everyone can hear them.

Transformed was such a huge surprise for me because I always saw footage of it as a launch title for Wii U and I thought it was just some throwaway garbage racing title but that shit turned out to the most fun I've had with a kart racer in a while. Made going to Mario Kart 8 awkward because in that game the races are filled with such RNG bullshit that's completely out of your control. Transformed felt like it actually took skill, or at least relatively more skill.
