what's /v/'s opinion on undertale? I know that the fandom is cancerous but I think it's a really great game with a great soundtrack.
Good, but overrated. Aesop/moral-of-story that literally saves lives, but as an average gamer the game's good, not great.

Decent game
Boss fights are rather inventive with integrating the gameplay and the narrative, but random encounters get very boring very quick and unlike any other RPG out there, don't provide any satisfaction because grinding and stats are an illusion. I know it's supposed to be a moral message but it could have been handled differently like making the game a series of fixed encounters
Level design is boring, puzzles despite being somewhat of a plot point are barely there, it's just walking from A to B for the next boss battle. The Ruins in particular were a very slow introductory area that give the player wrong expectations about the game.
Graphics are actually alright for a pixel indie game but rather inconsistent
The game's strongest point is integrating gameplay conventions and video game abstractions into the narrative. Almost everything from save games to the concept of a "boss fight" is explained from an in-universe perspective, making it very immersive. Most actions have reactions and there was a lot of thought put into the detail.
The biggest problem is that there isn't any replay value after you've beat the three routes. Despite trying to be a deconstruction of formulaic JRPGs where choices actually matter, it's very linear. There is no explanation or any incentive to repeat the experience.
Music is great, no complaints here.
Characters are good and receive a good deal of character development. Dialogue shouts its allegiance with the internet culture too often, but I have more tolerance for that than most people on here and wasn't too bothered. Writing was okay, not groundbreaking but not terrible either.
A legitimate 7/10 for me.
