Anyone here dropped out of the PC market and went to consoles? I just posted this in the other thread and really just want to share my experience and see if other people are in the same boat.

I actually left PC gaming a few months ago and went console. My rig is still sitting here, the only real thing I actually used it for is posting on 4chan, the rest of the time was playing multiplats and realizing I really don't enjoy them. I've already played most of the PC classics back when they were relevant, I tried MOBAS, online shooters with varying success, I got into a few MMO's but they just aren't real games.

I went with a PS4 and a wiiU and everytime I look at my rig I just feel upset I wasted so much dam money on the thing. My old PC could emulate everything and run just about every game I've played on my new rig although at lower settings but the games just aren't worth really running at higher settings anyway.

I really regret building my fucking PC but can't bring myself to sell it simply because I invested so much time, money and effort int it.

>Nintendo deserves to go under.
>>
>>319647956
Wait for Broadwell-E. The 6700K is overpriced as fuck right now and offers very little performance over old Haswell CPUs.
If you desperately want to make a build right now you should go X99 with a 5920K (as it costs less than the 6700K right now) and could then upgrade to Broadwell-E as the socket remains identical - but perhaps we also get a few improved boards with Broadwell-E and waiting is the better option.
I personally don't expect massive improvements from anything in 2016 though and 2017 will be the first year we see reasonable gains.
>>
>>319648295

Meant 5820K (no idea why the next bigger one is then called 5930K).
>>
>>319648094
>What's AIO
'All In One' Water loops. I personally advise against them because the possibility of failure is significantly increased (granted still small but more so than straight air cooling)

What's your take on good quality air cooling these days? Are CPUs running cooler these days as technology improves?

>>319648518
Ok, what I meant is I haven't yet. I've got all the faith in the world that I can do it.

I'm actually more reluctant to build anything at the minute with the new architecture coming out. I'd like to see some benchmarks before I commit.
>>
>>319648295
Not that anon, but I have a mid/high PC.
What do you expect could I get at 2017 Pascal's with 1200-1700€?
I really want a new PC, but I currently just have 500€~ and my PC is just one year or a little more. Also I want to get a PS4 to play some incoming games.
>>
>>319648756
He isn't wrong anon you just look at references and youtube you can learn a lot and then just take the plunge the only thing I doubt myself a lot on is connecting the power supply to everything.
>>
>>319648606
Yeah but the performance gains are significant, making the 5820K pull ahead in price/performance ratio. That is if you use SMT at all - for pure gaming the i5 would be the smarter option anyways.
>>
>>319648913
>What's your take on good quality air cooling these days?
I prefer it. For the price of an AIO you can usually get a air cooler that can match it in performance.

>Are CPUs running cooler these days as technology improves?
Well if you go back a decade (perhaps a bit more) you wouldn't have been able to over clock anything with out a custom water loop but as for how things are going now, it's hard to say.

>I'm actually more reluctant to build anything at the minute with the new architecture coming out.
Enjoy always being reluctant then.
>>
>>319649026
That's the thing, i5's are finally starting to become a bottleneck in some new games. Not a dramatic one, but still.
My reason for wanting to upgrade is mostly as preparation for Pascal/Arctic Islands, I'm pretty sure that a 490x/1080 would be bottlenecked by a 4670k.
Yet I find it doubtful I'd actually use the extra 2 cores. On the other hand they might come in handy. Hence the impasse.
>>
>>319649008
And if it were just plugging shit in we'd all be showing off our FX-8350s with 32GB or ram and GTX 560s in 3 way sli.
>>
>>319649287
>I'm pretty sure that a 490x/1080 would be bottlenecked by a 4670k.

In this instance your monitor is bottlenecking your graphics card.

You over estimate how much the cpu actually does in gaming.
>>
>>319649416
Not really, GTA 5 showed cleared signs of being CPU bottlenecked in places even on 1080p. Fallout 4 does as well, to a lesser extent.

I don't understand the pc vs consoles thing.
I always had both and love them, why are you americans so angry at both plataforms?
>>
>>319649689
My experience?
In places I've hit 95% to 100% CPU usage with a corresponding decrease in GPU usage and framerate. Not that it was dropping to unplayable levels, but ~40 wasn't uncommon.
And in Fallout I see a similar thing in places - CPU usage at around 85% across all cores with the GPU barely reaching 60% utilization in those spots.

>>
>>319649287
For gaming definitely don't go with 2011-3 or i7s. I only know of 3 games that scale well with more cores - Witcher 3, Star Ruler 2 and Ashes of the Singularity. Most others are either "optimized" for single- or quad core usage. There's also the very prominent SMT-choke with HT that often causes issues when latency is involved and makes people disable HT on their i7s when gaming a lot, essentially wasting their investment.
The bottleneck at 1080p will shift to GPU as it's likely people will up the resolution. The industry wants to see 4K as the next big thing and (W)QHD has already become the new standard for high-end display manufacturers.
I myself am already sitting on a 1440p@144Hz display (wouldn't advise to get one yet though, quality issues are extreme) and SLI 980tis aren't enough to feed it to a point where an [email protected] can't keep up.
Basic CPU demand of games probably won't increase much further as nobody could play the games - the low-end mainstream accounts for most sales after all. DX12's overhead reduction also makes it likely CPU bottlenecks aren't as much a concern as they are right now.

If I wanted to remove a component.. it just seems like it'd be a lot of annoyance to pull it through the backing. And the only time I'm opening up my case is when I want to fiddle with it, it's not a big deal to me if there are cluttered but accessible wires.

I guess it'd be useful to some people and if you were a neat freak they'd keep you sane but its not for me.

The gpu and ram is a recent upgrade. Now I need to get a better hdd, the rpm on this one is atrocious. That's where I skimped when O built it originally, but now the load times are beginning to annoy the shot out of me.

Any tips on a cheapish but good hdd? I don't need an ssd, just an acceptable platter hdd.

PC gaming is a meme at this point. Just look at "the way it's meant to be played" games like Just Cause 3. They are absolutly identical to the console versions and just run at slightly higher frame rate.
>>
>>319650329
Unless you're swapping out components daily it hardly seems like an issue. Especially when you can just unplug it from the part and leave it hanging out of the hole. As for the clutter, it isn't exactly the best for air flow.

>I guess it'd be useful to some people and if you were a neat freak they'd keep you sane but its not for me.
Being "neat" is not their main purpose - the reason (aside from visuals that won't even matter in a closed case like every grown-up would use instead of one with glass like 13-year olds want for bragging reasons) to hide cables is to improve airflow and as such enhance cooling potential. The more cables in the case, the more whirling and looping air, the more issues with getting heat out of the case one will have. That matters particularly for high-end GPUs, multi-GPU setups, highly utlized storage solutions and overclcoked CPUs where every degree of heat takes away from OC potential or can even lead automatic downclocking when the TDP should be reached. There's of course also the argument that less temps mean more quiet fans.
>>
>>319650416
Your whole life is a meme kid.
>>
>>319651215
I'd love to see a comparison at peak performance and regular usage between having cables hanging out and about, and having them tucked away.

I'm not buying it at face value that it has that significant of a difference.
