Neither game is that funny. I much prefer Portal 2 for its more interesting environments and clever puzzle solutions/mechanics. The addition of a co-op mode and a level editor adds even more value.
In 1 you have two environments. The sterile white test chambers and the cramped insides of the lab walls. They serve a purpose, but 2 is so much more interesting to explore.
When you get thrown down into the guts of the lab and you come across all the abandoned versions of Aperture over the course of like 50 years, it's awesome visually and thematically.

It was a big step technically because of the portal mechanic itself, it was quite literally impossible to implement because the coding for it was really complex (not now of course)

Portal 2 was broader and longer, but of lower quality.
In the end both were equally as good, one just happened to be more spread out than the other.

It reduced most singleplayer puzzles into either "find all the white patches" or "deduce in which order should you put portals on the white patches". I got actually stuck only maybe once in the entire singleplayer.
It wasn't until the coop and custom levels that all that gel and shit was put to its full potential.
I miss when Valve made video games.
Sure, Dota 2 and CSGO are both more recent than Portal 2 but they don't feel like new games to me.

I came here to write this, basically. They turned Portal 2 into a comedy. Not a terrible one, I laughed. But it becomes a very different game from Portal 1.
I found my self laughing at a couple bits and the puzzles are fun. The only sad thing is that the game is easy and the co-op without a friend or someone with out a mic is horrendous even though Valve did the best they could do.

Portal 2 is an excellent game, way superior to its predecessor. P2 felt like a full game, P1 was more like an experiment. While 2 was still playable, I feel like they didn't understand what they did right when they made the first one, everything was dialled up so far that it was just kind of obnoxious, the writing, the characters, even the soundtrack. Portal had a fantastically chilling ambient ost while the sequel's sounds like a server room having an orgasm for the most part
