You just need a good guide. There's no point trying to figure it out from scratch, it's just inefficient. If I can build a -well-crafted- fortress you can to.

>But i would like to play a sci-fi game with the same complexity as Dwarf Fortress
Closest I can think of is the Fallout mod for Dwarf Fortress. It was pretty well fleshed out but it's for an older version.

There's Rim World too but nowhere near as complex as DF.

There are none, unfortunately. But you might mod it to reflect what you want, if you have the patience.

You can already play with 3D to help you visualize things.

There's Stonesense that you run alongside the client which allows you to see your game with improved graphics, if not 3D. It's not real time but you sort of refresh it to view 'snapshots' of your game.
Not exactly what you want but it's probably the closest we'll get.

Huh? I don't remember Notch saying anything like that and I was playing Minecraft when it was pre-alpha. Unless you mean it's what everyone WANTED it to be then yeah I agree.

Because I already buried over 300+ military dwarves due to crashing them into enemy forces with almost no armor.
Although my coffin industry is flourishing, its getting dull cleaning up the battlefield then assigning next 40 dwarves to suicide squads.
Waiting for 42.03 now that fixed armor wearing bug.

Military is quite easy now, or I really got used to it.
Pop 10-30 people in a squads, preferably by using dwarf therapist where you can easily assign them custom profession "Soldier" with premade set of skill (I like stuff like pump operating, then I setup a "gym" in the barracks).
And in 2-3 years of them training, you will have legendary solder squads no problem, as training is working properly now, and danger rooms exploit has been nerfed.

They all actually got slaughtered by a siege of 50+ undead from a nearby necromancer tower.
That was one of my first sieges at start of 42.01, before I realized the armor bug.

I made a simple world, checked if it had goblin population, and embarked randomly.
So far (~10 years ingame) I've had 1 undead siege, and like 6+ goblin sieges amassing to over 800+ goblin/troll corpses and their gear I had to haul around!
I really regret not setting up a trash compactor room (drawbridge) to smash all the items/corpses. Its bloating all over the place, my frames are taking a hit.

It depends on how well you manage the space and your items
You can make a 100pop fort tank like hell if you leave clutter and fluids everywhere, make 1x pathways, leave a billion animals running around and so on
>>
>>319639719
Yee, but it will just be huge bloated boxes with 100s of trinkets that in total worth come up to a single stack of well made meals.
If you want to profit, bring a really skilled chef with you, make most amazing food pots to send back with caravans, and a single pot is usually enough to buy half a caravan including all their raw food so you can make more prepared meals.

Or hit a gold nugget veins, have train a guy in metalcrafting, then churn out golden shit worth 5k dorfbucks a piece.

Performance is definitely better but it's nothing compared to a proper setup.

More tips both for performance and general good fortress management

Make lots of bins/barrels for storage, cages for animals (cats)

All hallways should be 2 tiles wide as standard to help with traffic (but still lets you put up doors/traps flush)

The best defense is still the faithful moat and drawbridge, be sure to dig out your channel and make it 2 tiles deep. Extremely performance friendly defense that works on most threats.

Instead of getting wacky with defenses just put cage traps at key intersections and your fortress's entrance hallway, takes care of most enemies.

Don't have workshops set to infinitely craft something unless you plenty of storage.

It's not a bad idea to make small specialized storage designations right next to your workshops. By decentralizing storage and keeping things close you cut WAY down on foot traffic. Makes for a cleaner and performance friendly fortress. Having storage everywhere isn't very pretty but it's effective.

My latest strategy for extra movement/storage is to clone each floor, make the one below it the same hallway layout (with regular access stairs between the two) and use the same room layout but with storage. Dorfs on specific hauling errands will use the service floor plus you get a massive amount of space to store stuff. Also super performance friendly.

That punk motherfucker probably didnt purposefully breach hell with a 200 strong military either

Stick with hammers if you don't have at least iron weapons. Blunt damage has a lot of benefits, a lot of times the enemy will get a broken bone early on and pass out from the pain. To sever limbs and other serious stuff on armored foes requires at least iron/steel + training.

Quick militia tip: train them as wrestlers first it's safe, fast, free and boosts a lot of relevant combat stats.

Spears are decent in adventure mode but I would avoid them in fortress mode except for weapon traps (where they are awesome). CPU dorfs like to use their weapons in all the different possible ways, so they end up bashing with the spear instead of stabbing half the time. Not good.

Generally you want to stick with hammers and axes. Hammers are great for poverty fortresses with no hope of steel or possibly even iron. If you're getting into steel or higher I recommend axes for sure.

Biggest hammer advantage - can break bones (and skulls) through armor, causing fast unconsciousness from pain. Their downside is enemies are generally capable of fighting well right up until that one big blow ruins their day.

Axes advantage - Like I said above CPU's swing them every which way, which for axes works great. Even the broad side of an axe is a decent blunt weapon. For hacking and slashing their mass helps them beat out swords in general. Biggest downside: axes usually don't break bones so no enemies blacking out in pain. They usually hit a leg though which puts an enemy on the ground, almost as good, therefore I say axes are #1 for your military with hammers a close second.

Read up on the DF wiki for weapon traps. 10x spear in each individual trap is a slaughter for anything dumb enough to walk through it. You want pure piercing damage in traps since you never know what kind of tough/armored foe will pass through eventually. Don't use axes and swords in traps, all the severed limbs can jam them.

Hook war dogs to chains and keep them around your entrance, stops thieves from sneaking in. Dogs are just "ok" in combat, you're better off just keeping them chained out front to soften up any serious attacks because they're not dependable enough to be an effective main force.

Always disable all hauling tasks for miners and other important dwarves. Their immediately become way more efficient.

>>319642593
Once you have streams of migrants coming in it's a smart move to put all the women in a burrow then lock it down and let them starve to death or something. Without females dorfs do not create families, it preemptively stops tons of unhappy thoughts and helps prevent tantrum spirals.

Same concept, never let them idle in your meeting haul and throw parties. The less social your population is they happier they tend to be. The moment they form connections with each other it's nothing but heartbreak the moment some DF shit goes down.

Every time they collide with each other in a 1 wide it has to calculate the collison and it slows them both down in-game for a moment. Going two wide usually fixes this. 3+ wide hallways aren't very efficient since they will rarely use the middle unless it's a straight shot, plus there should never be that much traffic in one spot to begin with.
>>
>>319643115
If two dorfs pass on a 1 tile hallways one will have to crouch to get past, slowing them down, and I think they try to calculate an alternative route instead

I can do the keyboard commands for a year-round farm the will sustain a fortress all in my head.

Here's the steps:

1. Lay out a 10x10 farm plot on regular soils one or two layers down (not the deep rock).10x10 is not the most efficient but who cares, it's fine for beginners.

2. Set it to grow plump helmets. Make sure you do it all four seasons and not just one, this is where most people screw up.

3. Set one of your starting dwarves as a grower and brewer. Don't worry about picking the food anyone will do that. This one will plant the seeds and make wine though.

4. Build a workshop Brewery next to your farm, make wine here

5. Storage next to farm too, designate it for food and wine only.

That's it, a single 10x10 farm can handle hunger and thirst for all small to medium sized forts. Seek out alternatives once you grow larger, or just make a second one of what I just typed out next to the first one.

Now, read up on moat/drawbridge defenses and also cage traps. With those defending your fortress you will nullify most threats. Congrats, your fortress now has lots of food, drinks and is safe, from here it's easy to mess around and learn more stuff.
>>
It's a feature creep game with no core development. It's just stacking and stacking of more features with no real direction. He's been working on this game for almost a decade now and it still runs like shit and is plagued with bugs. It's a single update once a year, yet he's working full time on the game and getting paid 50k a year via patreon. Despite updates coming once a year, they're usually filled to the brim with bugs. Unplayable, gamebreaking bugs. There's really no excuse.

I tried dumping the bodies of all my dead dwarves, food scraps, random enemy skeletons and gear all into a 1 tile size garbage pit. The pit was down a shaft which also served as the chamber for a water cannon. When the cannon shot I figured all that crap would explode outwards like a macabre shotgun, perfect for taking out the unwanted noble of my choice whose bed I placed a few tiles in front of the muzzle.

Unfortunately water pressure in DF is very underwhelming, it did "fire" but it was more like a liquid garbage avalanche than a decisive blast. The noble escaped and I lost half my fortress to flooding as he left a trapdoor open on his way out.

5x5 is just fine. 10x10 doesn't get used by even experienced growers. Some people do 3x3 but I've noticed it creates too many tasks and they don't get planted as reliably. Smaller plots are better for growing weird niche stuff in seasonal rotation. For plump helmets I usually use 7x7 which seems to be the sweet spot for zero maintenance mushroom hoarding once your growing team is experienced.

If a dwarf is about to go on a suicidal tantrum just set the doors to the room he's in as forbidden so he can't get out. Better to let one starve than many go crazy.

Sometimes the crazy ones get out though which calls for plan B. Make floodgates in your hallways at major intersections and link them all to a single lever in your meeting hall (best place for levers since there is someone nearby to pull it). The moment someone starts going insane pull that lever and lock that shit down before half your fort ends up in a brawl to the death. Keeping food/wine storage in little areas around your fort is advisable if you do a lock down strategy so everyone can wait it out while the offender starves to death or dukes it out with the handful of unlucky citizens that are now trapped with him.

"Ha! ha! ha! --he! he! he! --a very good joke, indeed --an excellent jest. We will have many a rich laugh about it at the mayor's office --he! he! he! --over our plump helmet wine --he! he! he!"

"The Adamantium!" I said.

"He! he! he! --he! he! he! --yes, the Adamantium. But is it not getting late? Will not they be awaiting us at the mayor's office, the Lady Urist and the rest? Let us be gone."

"Yes," I said, "let us be gone."

"For the love of Armok, Ilral!"

"Yes," I said, "for the love of Armok!"

But to these words I hearkened in vain for a reply. I grew impatient. I called aloud --

"Urist!"

No answer. I called again --

"Urist!"

No answer still. I thrust a torch through the remaining aperture and let it fall within. There came forth in return only a jingling of the bells. My heart grew sick; it was the dampness of the catacombs that made it so. I hastened to make an end of my labour. I forced the last stone into its position; I plastered it up. Against the new masonry I re-erected the old rampart of bones. For the half of a century no mortal has disturbed them. Losing is fun!

That happened to me too, my first vamp prison was a simple constructed wall and he popped through somehow. The second one I tried suspending in water underground but I didn't go deep enough and the water froze, he got out.

Now I put him in a chamber way off to the side, forbid the door then build a constructed wall in front of it. For good measure I flood the hallway around him and seal off the whole zone forever (the whole thing is 20x20 or so) which is probably overkill but hasn't failed me yet. Make sure not to mess up this situation, don't dig one Z level above or below the vamp.

Necromancers are the worst. My adventure mode character is super strong but those assholes love running up to me out of nowhere and sending all of their undead peasants at me. Aim for the upper torso on zombies, this isn't Romero canon they can live just fine without a head. By pulverizing / bisecting / nearly-bisecting the torso it causes enough damage to put them down for good, leave the limbs attached so they can't operate independently.

The necromancers themselves are usually resilient too, if not strong. The last one who tried to attack me got a spear to the skull which got stuck in his head and he continued to live until a heart wound + pulling the spear out bled him dry.

I've flooded the world and survived, locking down the fort right away stopped immediate destruction. I had manual pumps built that dwarves had to work on 24/7 (I had more than necessary since they suck at sticking with it) because the bottom floor had a few open doorways leading to the main body of water up through my side entrance, there was no way of ever closing it so I just had to keep pumping water out forever.

Eventually I constructed a floor over that and enjoyed a carefree fortress life stuck with water on all sides of me. My grand plan was to build a glass ceiling so sunlight could still come in and I could grow trees underground that way, unsurprisingly a construction accident finally wiped everyone out.

A lone bastion of light stands against the forces of evil. It's tired dwarves man the walls against uncountable evils.
Every day a new horror rears its head only to be driven back by courage, ingenuity, and blood.
The guard commander stands at his post overlooking the burned and desolate landscape. The land sick with the blood of demons and worse. It has been centuries since any dorf has even opened the gate. The commander readies his one good arm against the mornings assault.
