Get the crescent falchion from 4-1 as soon as possible.

Might want to consider using a walkthrough for the tendency stuff, it's pretty obtuse and retarded.

Get a shield with 100% damage resist asap until you feel comfortable enough to go without using a shield, then just get one with nice benefits for you back and two hand a weapon of your choice and just use rolls for defence. This game also has the most cheesable bosses with a bow and arrow of any of the souls series, so if you don't feel like getting gud for a certain boss, that's always an option.

Go in blind, the game isn't as hard as the media makes it out to be. Its challenging, and some sections are frustrating, but going in blind makes the experience really nice. You get too experience some badass boss fights unspoiled.

Unlike the other Souls games there's item burden stat meaning that you can only hold a certain amount of weight at once so you'll have to store your items with an NPC fairly often or you won't be able to pick items up

Dont forget to put your ores in storage any chance you get

HP regen stacks and is way more broken than in later souls game

Maxed out blessed weapon+adjudicator shield+HP regen ring= you regenerate health like Halo does shields, you can use the latter two to offset the HP drain of the special katana weapons.
