They are all fantastic RPGs, pirate them and see. ME1 is arguably the strongest narrative (that soverign speech was GOAT), combat was the weakest but still fun and the planetary exploration while repetitve gave the series a sense of exploration not found in the other games. ME2 was the best imo, it had another strong narrative, excellent writing and one of the best finales i've played in gaming, period. ME3 was both simulatneously the weakest and strongest, it had a much more watered down RPG component but also some of the series highpoints (Going to the Krogan home world, Leviathan and Citadel DLC, Moridon Bros death etc) as well as the best combat in the trilogy and some GOAT multiplayer, the ending and watered down RPG really held it back though.
Give them a try, if you like Sci Fi or RPGs you'll love the games

Mass Effect should have ended with you choosing which planets to save from the reapers, and the better you did in the games overall the more you can save. So you could choose to focus on earth and human colonies, the council races' primary worlds or try and save as many of each race as possible without bias. Asking why he would respond at all is a deeper problem with the writing, which is the Reapers themselves. In no piece of fiction has an enemy that causes mass extinction been an interesting thing to fight against. It's too broad and completely lacking in personal stakes beyond the shallow survival instinct. The Reapers being shit in ME3 was just natural result of their introduction in 1 -- there is no way it was going to be good. You need someone like Saren as a villain, not the ancient evil space robots. Which is why I originally said I wanted a more personal narrative.
