Because their diversity didn't feel forced. Humanity was on its last legs fighting a desperate war, and their entire species had been nearly eradicated by the Locust. When we get to Gears 3 and the COG itself has collapsed, it makes complete sense for everyone to be fighting as a soldier, females included. Every one of them is a stranded, they can't afford bodies that don't fight. Now with the prequel where the main dude has a female co-op partner, I'm not so sure. But if they make her a well-rounded and fleshed out character I won't complain.
