I finally finished Deus Ex: HR and it was awesome. Should I bother playing the original?

Yeah, it's a lot better. Definitely one of those games that holds up fine without mods, and I say this as someone who can't stand vanilla Morrowind.
Just get the Direct3D 10 renderer and you'll have a good time.
First level is pretty meh but pretty much the rest of the game has stellar level design.

If you played DX:HR like a stealth game, the original is good.
Otherwise, if you played DX:HR like a COD, shooting every threat and going lethal, the original is worse.

Without a doubt DX is one of my favorite games of all time. The intro level can be a bit overwhelming, but stick with it. This is also one of the most meme-filled games out there

My big issue is I have no idea how to use the hotbar. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, and touching the mouse wheel seems to fuck it all up.
Plus on my current save point I have a LAM placed and when it goes off, it alerts everyone to exactly where I am. I'm about a room away from Gunther's cell; I went through the vent shaft.
It's just not kicking with me, and this is coming from someone who loved HR.

something you have to be aware of when you go into the original Deus Ex is that its a stealth game, not a shooter, sneak around the levels, use silent takedowns, try to find alternate routes
in the first level you get offered a sniper rifle, a mini-crossbow, or a rocket launcher, take the rocket launcher and remember that its a tool first and a weapon second, use it to blow open doors or destroy robots and security cameras. You need some kind of explosive to destroy those, guns or melee weapons wont work.

I would've played Deus Ex before HR. You appreciate the basic QoL improvements of HR more that way, though you also notice the things that the original did better. Playing the original after HR might throw you off in some ways, because the whole thing is a lot clunkier and some elements, like the way gunplay works, feel strange if you're used to normal FPS mechanics.
You absolutely should play the original though, because it does a bunch of things better than HR in terms of level design and has a pretty cool story.

Honestly I played deus ex pure stealth until after Hong Kong, then i played primarily stealth but sometimes decided to a be a super human murder machine. Shit was fun

I played HR first and I had no problem with the original. It's better in most regards besides the obvious technical disadvantages. HR hacking is far superior.
Human Revolution is still fantastic though even with the strange melee system. I'm less optimistic for Mankind Divided.

one thing I love about the original is that it doesn't reward playstyle with xp but just discovery or solving objectives.
its been a year though so I could be remembering it wrong.
I want to enjoy it but I have a serious fucking issue. Things like the knife are fine, but if I equip the prod or pistol I literally cannot switch weapons, even if I drop that weapon from my inventory.
Is this Deus Exe's doing? I'm trying to enjoy it but I can't if i can only use one item.

Yes, though the shooting mechanics take some time to get used to. I also recommend playing it modded first, with something like http://www.moddb.com/mods/shifter1 . It makes the game significantly better.
