Thinking of getting myself a 12GB PS3 from Gamestop and then replacing the HDD myself.

Pre-owned or Refurbished? How well do refurbished work?

Regular or Slim? Any advantage to Slim other than being thinner
>>

>12GB
>Super Slim
>Gamestop
No. FUCK no.
Get an used 120Gb Slim. You probably get it cheaper, and with tons of games + accessories.

Only reason to get old FAT versions would be native PS2 backwards compatibility.
>>
>>319557980
Shiiiiiiiiit man, i made a thread today about a similar situation. I'm probably getting a used ps3 slim or super slim depending on the price and conditions.

>Get an used 120Gb Slim. You probably get it cheaper, and with tons of games + accessories.
Where are you even getting this from?

$120 max for 12GB and $40-$50 to upgrade the HDD to 500GB.

And I'm not going to buy it from some Ebay faggot who tries to send some broke-ass shit
>>
do NOT get super slim.
>>
>>319557980

That's the super slim, not the slim.
And a late downgradable slim is the ideal PS3. Then you can CFW.
>>
>>319560390
>>319560526
Is 250GB enough memory?

And why not Super Slim?
>>
What's so bad about a super slim?
>>
>>319560390
is it because of over heating problems or some shit like that?
>>
>>319560586

That's fine if you're not buying everything digital.
>>
>>319560059
Thanks super slims are built like crap.
Thanks to ps2 emulation the order they were built in is mostly the best order.

Phat (ps2 emu) > slim (solid build) > super slim (garb)
>>
>>319560710
Alright, I'm most likely going to get discs for everything. Digital purchases don't transfer to the PS4 right?
>>
>>319560853
nop
>>
>>319560853

Depends. Some games are crossbuy.

>>319560847

Fats have really shitty longevity, especially the early ones which still have PS2 BC.
Just get a slim PS2 and a slim PS3.
>>
>>319557980
If you get a slim avoid any with the model number CECH 3001. Most models can be saved from YLOD but 3001 can become un-repairable.

I bought a CECH 3001 model and it started artifacting, FUCK.
>>
>>319561079

>Have first model slim
>Only got artifacting once and exactly once
>CPU/GPU Temps typically 60, occasionally push 70 C
I'm scared.

games range from 2-25GB on ps3 (yakuza games are around 23GB).

the super slim models are cheap because production was cheap.
>>
>>319558430
why not superslim?
its not that bulky, and i dont want dat classy BD sucking drive.
>>
>>319560976
I have the MGS4 80gb phat bundle and it still works to this day.
Guess I got lucky, it sounds like a vacuum though.
>>
>>319561079
So Slims of CECH 20XX or 21XX should be fine right?
>>
>>319561221
Shit sucks man, I have a fat ps3 as well but I couldn't even turn on my slim long enough to backup my DeS save file before it would start artifacting. I had to put it on a heater to warm it up just so It would work for the 3 minutes I needed to backup my DeS save file.
>>
>>319561462

The CECH-20xx uses the old 65nm RSX.
Get a CECH-21xx or CECH-25xx if you can.
>>
>>319561253
oh, fuck that, im getting a slim one
>>
>>319561253
a have 0 problems at all with superslim

all games on disc, exept first mgs
why bother?
>>
>>319561462
From what I understand 2500/3001 are the unsafest. I know for a fact 3001 is garbage, I talked to a guy who repairs ps3's and he said it was because if the cpu goes on that model it's fucking toast. Sony used some really fucking shitty solder unfortunately
>>
>>319561573
i'm noting this down
>>
>>319561813

Looks like the CECH-21xx is the ideal PS3 then.
>>
>>319561452
My phat ps3 sounds like a fucking jet plane taking off. Still works good tho.
>>
Well i have a 3004 with a huge backlog. Thanks for this thread you faggots, now I'm gonna be scared of turning the thing on.
>>
>>319557980
Wow you are fucking stupid. There's no 12gb version of regular or slim ps3 consoles, there's only super slim with that kind of memory

got myself a used 500gb ps3 a while back, played through all the games i wanted and sold it back.
super slim might look like shit, but the only problem with it is that the top cover tends to be scratched easily. and you can break it if you are a nigger.
>>
>>319562638
Just trying to prevent anons from getting fucked over like I did, my ps3 didn't even last a fucking year.
>>
>>319562880
I only started doing research when i made the thread. Didn't even know there was a Super Slim

Considering all the replies that no matter what you get, it will most likely shit on itself, I don't think it matters as long as you don't get CECH 3001 since it will most likely shit on itself faster than the rest
>>
>>319563086

The first fats (the BC and semi-BC ones) will shit themselves even faster. Later ones won't last long either.

People give the 360 shit for unreliable but at least that got fixed.

>have super slim 12gb
>hear there's overheating problems on certain games
>play spyro 1 on it
>mfw graphics and audio start to fuck up
>>
How 2 CFW slim on latest firmware?
>>
>>319563047
So it's just you? Just because your PS3 was fucked doesn't mean it's a widespread problem you know...
>>
>>319563495

Run this shit and find out it it's possible

>>
>>319563601
The guy I talked too who has been repairing ps3's for 10 years said it was the most unreliable model. The other repair service I tried before his wouldn't even attempt to fix them.
>>
>>319557980
Get a slim, I have mine for years now and never had problems. It also looks pretty good

Super slims are great, as long as you keep them elevated one inch off of a surface at all times. I have mine resting on paper bowls.

>Why do they overheat?
Their exhaust ports are on the very bottom of the system. Hot air rises, and they naturally sit as flat as possible. So flat that there is no realistic way for the heat to escape, so it cooks until it fails.

>I want to buy a used model
NEVER do that! PlayStations are not SEGA Genesis or Nintendo Entertainment Systems. Even a well handled PlayStation will die early due to internal heating problems.

>I want to buy a refurbished model
EVEN WORSE! I've had friends that have received their consoles back with next to no changes, only for them to fail a couple days later. That was when going through official means. GameStop must use a third party, because their crappy work fails the same day.
>>
>>319563620
Neat, gonna try CFW get single player games since PS3 online probably doesn't matter anymore.
>>
>>319560629
Fan going crazy after turning it on. Makes you wonder if the fan was even running the last time you used it. Makes for real scares.
>>
My fat (80gb base model as my 60gb one died ;_;) from like 2009 is still going well
>>
>>319564206

It's still there for a handful of games.
>>
>>319564325
i used my Fat one for 5 to 6 tears, it bit the bullet last year.
