1 is a nice quintessential star wars experience. It does basically everything you'd expect a star wars game to do. Light and Dark playthrough are very different in the finale. 1 and 2's stories are pretty night and day. 1 celebrates Star Wars and 2 completely demolishes it. 1 just doesn't have the ridiculously short dev cycle 2 did, so it's a much more complete experience.
Probably one of Bioware's best games, for better or worse. Actually gameplay is eh, but it's not very frustrating so you can just powerthrough it. Compared to 2 mechanically, it's just less options and more imbalanced (good for you though)

Recently I played 1 and replayed 2 with the restoration pack.
2 in my opinion is better in almost every way except planet exploration.
Companions in 1 are just trash. Even the 2 good ones are kinda shit since all you ever do with them is

The writing of the world is closer to the Star Wars movies but in some places it goes way fucking overboard with how the Sith are. Like fucking hell all interaction with them is look how fucking evil we are. Even fucking UNLIMITED POWER Palpatine had more depth then the sith in the game.
The exploration though. goddamn it's a joy to explore the planets and this where the first game just shits on 2.
Also 2 refined the gameplay and 1 feels weaker here. It's pretty noticeable. Also crafting and upgrading weapons is a joke in 1 compared to 2.
If you hadn't played 2 I would recommend playing 1 and 2 in order, but seeing how you played 2, don't expect 2.
KOTOR is a good game but 2's improvements might have spoiled you and make you look down on the first one.

Like kotor2, the beginning of the game can be a bit dull and you get to choose where to go only after finishing a couple planets.
The writing is a bit more dull and infantile compared to 2, but the overall story is charming. Also the light/dark "decisions" are the generic kill everyone or give them all your money.
The endgame planet is ok, at least has dialogue compared to 2, and the ending itself is much more satisfying because it's an actual ending instead of a to be continued

I don't like the idea that 2 "demolishes" Star Wars, since deconstructions aren't inherently hostile. Chris Avellone has admitted multiple times to loving Star Wars, it's just clear he wanted to do something very different with the setting. That's the entire reason why the Old Republic era was invented in the first place: so that writers could do whatever the fuck they wanted and have it be historically irrelevant by the time the movies rolled around. Hence why we can have a guy who devours planets of life force and have that particular factoid just be lost to history.
There's this idea flying around that Avellone hates Star Wars and just wanted to tear it apart and that's not true at all. Hell, part of the reason the tone is so radically different from traditional Star Wars is because some of the characters were recycled unused character concepts from Planescape.

Everything else was meh as fuck, again with the exception of exploration. Like from the entire game I only remember 2 things that impressed me.
On Korriban when you make that student see how fucking idiotic the sith are and quit the academy by choosing to get electrocuted on purpose so he doesn't die.
And when you board Malak's ship and have all those options on how to escape the cells. That part is great.

I've been avoiding the newer series because they're almost all about OT characters. and I love the OT, don't get me wrong, but I've always felt like their story is more or less finished. I want to read about new characters. That's why Dawn of the Jedi is also absolutely god tier, but it ended prematurely thanks to the Disney acquisition. I'm also glad the new movie trilogy seems to be weening us off the OT characters to make room for the new guys, I think that's a really good call.

The point is often missed of how good a little antithesis is every now and again for a series as expansive and long running as Star Wars. I don't want every series to be like KotOR2 or every villain to be like Darth Traya. Not even most of them. But there's room in Star Wars for a story or two where characters have to come to terms with the kind of series they're in. More than a lot of other EU stories, it very much depends on the rest of the EU and Star Wars as a whole to be what it is.
And it's not like you can't play the game as a big FUCK YOU to Traya and her bullshit either.
