Pre 2012 your views counted for your CPM entirely. Then they changed it for watchtime only and this pushed all the letsplays/blogs to the front of youtube.
Their CPM model is set up to look for videos that are 10 minutes or longer and has frequent upload. Even if said video is 20 minutes long, but say only has 30% watch time, that's still 6 minutes of watch time (and thats from one video from a letsplayer a day or more). It's done because you can shovel a ton of ads for a longer period of time.
Meanwhile i put a video thats 1-2 minutes long but has 100% watch time, but due to nature of animating i can only put out one video a month (if at that), and so despite every single person watching it i still only get a total of 1-2 minutes of watch time for the entire month.
