999 is half VN, half escape-the-room puzzle game.
So you'll spend half your time tapping A to advance text, but it's actually surprisingly engaging, with a great story begging for multiple run-throughs.
PW is mostly a VN as well, but also has some crime scene investigation elements.

Phoenix Wright isn't as much a VN as it is just a point and click adventure game.
Great characters, music, and intense over the top lawyering action.
Ghost Trick is by the same dev, and is essentially a puzzle game, but also with great characters, story, music and visual design.

Here are my Top 9 DS games, I hope you take a look at them because they're all pretty good.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
One of my favorite of the Metroidvanias. The forced grinding for the good ending kind of sucks, but it's still really fun trying out all the new powers you get throughout the game. Protip: get Mandragora ASAP, it kicks ass.
Kirby Super Star Ultra
Arguably the best Kirby game to date. Not very difficult, but very "fun".

Interesting puzzle game, very addicting.
Pokemon Platinum and HG/SS
It's Pokemon.
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Sky
For a roguelike, it's not very good, but it's certainly a unique take on the genre. Lots and lots of text in this one, wouldn't recommend if you're looking for raw gameplay.
Retro Game Challenge
This one's really cool. You play through a series of retro-inspired video games doing specific challenges. 2D shooter, platformer, racing game, and RPG are some of the genres represented in the game. The games are pretty short, so even if you don't like a particular game it won't take long to be on to the next one.
SMT: Strange Journey
This is the only SMT I've played, but I've been told that Strange Journey is a good place to start playing SMT. The combat is quite fun, it's like Pokemon combined with a traditional RPG. The maps are very frustrating, to the point where I stopped playing, but I had fun up until then.

Ultra makes a few improvements over the SNES version, and adds in four new modes that are really great.
Revenge of the King is like Spring Breeze: Hard Mode.
Meta Knightmare is a speedrun of the other modes, but you play as Meta Knight instead of Kirby.
Helper to Hero is like the Arena but you play as a Helper instead of Kirby.
Finally, the True Arena is a harder version of the Arena. This one is really worth checking out.
