DQ or FF?
I prefer DQ, but I think it's mostly up to personal opinion.

Final Fantasy is interesting because it keeps innovating and changing with every new major installment. It's a series that, for better or worse, always surprises you and tends to leave a huge impact with the audience.
Dragon Quest is something safe that you can always return to and it'll be exactly the same as you remember it. It embraces its heritage and old school mindset, and while some will find that tiring fans are totally comfortable with that.
I'd say Dragon Quest overall is a way more consistently good franchise but when Final Fantasy reaches its heights there's really nothing else like it, which is probably why it's maintained its place as the leading JRPG despite all its stumbling last gen.

Final Fantasy games drop the ball too much, you can't never guess if the next game will be good or not, and the constant hype for every single game always end up in disappoint for me.
DQ games are more consistent in it's quality, it's not something for everyone and it'll probably never get any popularity or significance in the west, but if I have to choose, I'll always go with DQ first.Also, I find the DQ girls to be way more cute.
