I was dubious about it, brought it on a whim and absoltuely fucking loved it.
The characters are hillarious, you can turn automapping on to avoid the tedium, the fusion system is actually better than mainline (thank god for being able to select inheritance) and the combat is surprisingly fun.
Seriously one of my favourite 3DS games and I'd never even played P3.

I'd go for it. Just keep in mind:

Aside from that, yeah. It's a nice little fanservice game to show you how the two casts would interact with each other. Nah it's just all played for laughs.
Complaining that they're "flanderised" is the wrong way to look at it, that's talking about them losing their character and just becoming a trope over the course of a series/season.
This is much more like a 4Koma gag manga (I mean, c'mon, it even uses SD artstyle).
The characters are narrowed to fit silly jokes, they all act ridiculously, even the most serious characters are running around saying silly stuff.
It's all good fun, it honestly cracked me up a tonne of times. Hell, in some cases like (half the P3 cast imo but more notably) Yukiko it actually makes her a much more fun character, since it makes her almost borderline insane. It's fun!
Plus hey, now Yu and Minato get characterisation. Minato is pretty bland but Yu is fucking great.

Not in my experience, P4MC/Yu was by far the most ridiculously strong character because of how balanced his stats were and how much stronger Physical is than Magic (where P3MC is better with Magic than Physical).
Naoto was definitely good, but P4MC was one shotting everyone constantly with AoE Dark/Light when I was levelling up and by Endgame the Power Charge -> Hasu Tobi with Rakunda and Heat Riser+Debilitate or whatever the fuck crazy physical combo I was doing was doing fucking bonkers damage.
Chie and P4MC utterly unload on the boss, Naoto I basically just had as a Chain/Debuff/Buff bot.
All the dungeons were cool, except the festival one. Fuck that one.

Oh, one final tip OP. Use BOTH Yu and Minato. Trust me on this, you want them both to be high levelled.
You shouldn't need to bother otherwise swapping people in and out much, just give the people who aren't in the team an XP share ring. But you'll want both Yu and Minato to be good.

Yeah, both protagonists are very good. Both have high overall stats and I can also attest, you're going to want them to be high leveled. Figures that they're your best characters in their own games, they're your best ones in this one too.
Yukari and Mitsuru are not that great. Magic is really not that good in this game, neither is healing.

Fucking same. I ended up grinding to be strong enough to beat them. It ended up being a chore trying to avoid them all the time. I even found them scarier than the FOEs of the last dungeon (although that dungeon was pretty creepy) simply because they always got in my fucking way.
The boss of that dungeon was cool though, and had a really cool theme.

It's just, I heard a lot of monsters were weak to Light and Dark so I just ended up sticking Naoto onto my main team throughout the game. I found out that one of the FOEs only resisted Light and wasn't immune to it in the third dungeon so I ended up putting Mahamaon to good use with her and grinded off of those for a bit.
Although the P4 protagonist was also fantastic and basically had stats to suit any role. By the end, and up to now, I also have him using Power Charge + Heat Riser + Hassou Tobi, while the P3 protagonist uses Healing Harp + Debilitate + Marakunda and the rest just support with like, Teardrop, status, and binds.

I don't think so. The standard edition is indeed cheaper, though. I personally wouldn't recommend getting the DF Edition; the soundtrack is the only good thing about it, and that's pretty much why I got it.
