Yeeeeeeah I guess, but they could put it in segments and break it down into parts or chapters, or just outright arcs. It doesn't have to be this giant chunk of story driven gameplay with only one linear way through. Sometimes characters have different side arcs and stuff.
The layout of how to approach the story could look like a tree and it could have a lot of written exposition in the menu to keep you up to date on where you're at depending on the arc or side arc you want to tackle next.

You can get fairly close by just playing NUNS 3 and 4. 3 has a 'history mode' which basically lets you play all the major fights of the series. Obviously it doesn't have the cutscenes that the bits covered in the story mode have, but if you just want to play the big fights, you can sort of do that.
Or just wait 2-5 years, there's bound to be a comprehensive, definitive game with the whole story eventually.
