What are some good entry-level shmups? What would you recommend moving onto after I've gotten comfortable with those? Preferably PC please.
>>
I think what matters most is you pick a game and get dedicated to it. Has to be 1 game.
I recommend Blazing Star as its kind of easy. Some games you will want to refer to a guide or videos, there is no way around it with being creative on your own.

get a bunch of mame roms and test things out.
>>
EOSD
>>
>Preferably PC please.

Mushihimesama. The best shmup on PC right now, is a recent port so you won't have to deal with shit like the game only supporting 640x480 windowed, and has a babby mode as well.
>>
>>319323009
>Mushihimesama
you can just play it for free on mame

Vertically scrolling? Touhous have the best difficulty curve for newbies. Either EoSD if you want to play in order and can stand how much the graphics have aged or MoF if you want something that looks more polished. IN is often recommended but people don't realize that is a trap that will make you shit at bombing.

Horizontal scrolling I can't help you with, I don't like having an asymmetrical ship sprite.
>>
>>319323147
I keep seeing this logic every time an emulatable game gets a PC port and I still don't get it. Unless you own the original arcade board it's still piracy, so you might as well pirate the PC version anyway if you're going down that route.
>>
>>319321329
Most bullethells are fine for a beginner because you can put them on easy difficulty.

Try Crimzon Clover on Steam.
>>
Crimzon Clover is pretty good and you can frequently get it for next to nothing on Steam. You could also just use MAME and play pretty much every classic arcade shmup like Dodonpachi, Giga Wing, etc. And some shmupfags will hate me for recommending it, but Jamestown is fun and beginner-friendly, although playing it won't really make you much better at most shmups.

There's also always 2hu as the obvious answer, and I'd say Perfect Cherry Blossom is probably the most scrub-friendly out of the ones I've played, but I'm honestly not a fan of the series.

>What are some good entry-level shmups?
Raptor: Call of Shadows
Tyrian 2000 (I think you can download that one free if you have a GoG account)
Jet's and Gun's Gold

All three are pretty amazing (each in slightly different way), and fairly forgiving. All three are PC games.
Also, /v/ is bunch of fucking cretins when they haven't thought of those as the first games to recommend.
>>
>>319325252

No shmupfag plays western shmups at this point. The popularity of Touhou and other danmaku games has basically made it so that the only vocal audience for the genre are the people that play those types of shmups.

I loved Jets'n'Guns and liked Tyrian though.
>>
>>319326206
>No shmupfag plays western shmups at this point.
That's the fucking problem: A) Tohou aren't shmups, and B) when somebody asks for a entry-level shmups, he is not asking for fucking Tohou. Anyone who knows even a little bit about the fucking genre should immediately recall the three most popular western Shmups of all fucking time, which are legendary for being both challenging, yet not disencouraging new players.

Seriously, if under this requests these three don't pop-up in your head, you don't know shit about the god damn genre, and you probably should not be answering requests about it in the first place.
>>

I don't personally disagree, I'm just saying that';s why nobody ever talks about/recommends those games.

Most of /v/ either hates shmups or has fucking retarded /jp/-tier taste in the genre and thinks they should all be Touhou.
>>
>entry level shmups
I would say any of the 2hu or similarly styled "bullet hell" games

Gradius 3 is easily the easiest of the series though if you want to get into Gradius, but don't think it'll be easier than your standard bullet hell

There are other shmups out there that are neither Euroshit nor 2hushit and they are probably more likely to be recalled by players of the genre if they're not the /jp/edo type

for steam games I'd recommend danmaku unlimited 2 over crimzon clover personally. danmaku goes on sale for 99 cents and is more fun. nothing wrong with cc though

Super Aleste (Space Megaforce) on SNES was pretty easy and has infinite continues. Just emu it mang. Also there's a Cotton game on SNES that's so ridiculously easy that babbies could beat it.
>>
>>319331463
I thought it was a pretty solid port. Has novice, normal, arrange, 1.5 modes, online leaderboards, replay saving and uploading, training mode, borders, rebindable controls, etc.

I didn't think the MSlug 3 port was that bad either. Could've done with some borders and less cheap looking menus.

So download them off the internet? I played a burnt copy of Psyvariar 2 on my Dreamcast just fine back in the day.

R-Type Leo

No loops and not too hard. Good for a rather easy 1cc (especially the US version).

Is R-Type worth playing? Haven't touched the franchise in 25 years. I remember when this was the hottest shit:

Yes, don't play wacky european ports though.

Of course it is. R-Type is the shit.

I played a cave game for the first time. It was Mushihimesama because I found it on steam. Never knew there was a cave game on the PC so that was a nice find. Anyway, heard some good things about it so I gave it a try. Can't say I was impressed however. Cave games usually get hyped up to be really hard so I was excited, but after playing I'm not seeing it. I 1cc maniac after two tries and ultra in about 11 if I remember correctly. The vast majority of patterns were very simplistic in nature and lack any sort of creativity (like something I would expect from an amateur indie game dev making their first shoot em up rather than a company who has been in the business for years). It was basically all streaming during stages. Bosses were pretty simple to deal save for the true boss at the end, which is the reason why it even took me so many tries to clear ultra, but once I got that memorized it wasn't so bad. The last true boss had some streaming so it was easy until I got to the last pattern. It was just really dense and lasts really long. If you saved your resouces you can just bomb the whole thing.

The general idea in the game is to give you super fast bullets and really dense patterns. I'm not a fan of this type of gameplay honestly. You don't really have much time to read the bullets so it all comes down to muscle memory or pattern memorization usually. Hitboxes are very forgiving too. Don't even get me started on the lag; it gets trivial to dodge once that happens. I seen the slow down in a lot of cave videos. They really should fix that.

>>
>>319341659
What an ugly game. It looks like a one-man fan game.
The original Darius looked better than that.
>>
>>319340993
That system is bullshit, no doubt. The main reasons I love it are the graphics, the world and atmosphere, and the shield system that lets you fuck up once in a while without dying.

I like it more than the first game, but not sure how much you'll like it if you didn't care for the first one

also I'm a filthy casual and a big part of why I like it is the setting and bosses
>>
>>319342705
It was on normal. Other options were arrange whatever that is and version 1.5 which looks like it just has updated graphics and nothing else. Is it harder?

I said that its cooler with the humans. Gives it that Aliens vibe and shit. I mean still to this day, due to the original Contra cover, I want to see a Aliens movie where Stallone and Arnold blast through a bunch of Xenos. Sadly their time has come and gone. While they might be fit they are too old for the roles.

Voice acting + CGI
>>
>>319350153
I know but it won't feel right, you know? For Contra and Super C they always had this 80's action movie kinda vibe and it would be weird seeing it with CGI everwhere.

Though I would kill for a Contra movie, a Super C movie, and finally a Contra 3 movie. Maybe GCI could work for a Hard Corps movie or something.
