Never really messed with the rts genre, but I'd like to try some out. What's a good place to start?
Age of Mythologies
>>319316562
age of empire 2 and age of mythology both got HD remakes recently, which tells you how good they must be if people still play them after almost 15 years.
Starcraft is cool but different. Warcraft 3 has a pretty fun campaign and stellar custom maps (hero siege was my jam) but I never enjoyed the actual multiplayer because of the pop cap and all that. If you loved warcraft 3 because of the heroes and AoE 2 try out AoE 3. AoE 3 is pretty comfy and fun for a while but it has flaws the others don't. Still a good game on its own imo.
When I was a kid a played Red Alert like crazy. Pretty good game t b h
>>319316562
starcraft/anything blizzard is flowchart simulator for fags with no random maps because that's TOO HARD WAAAAHHH
true RTS games:
>age of empires 2
>age of mythology
>rise of nations
>empire earth
>0 AD maybe?
fake RTS games but still fun:
>supreme commander
>C&C: red alert 2
>relic RTS (company of heroes, dawn of war)
faggotry:
>everything else
>>319317858
>fake RTS games
>faggotry:
>everything else
>>319318154
deal with it retard
games without random map gen are not rts games
>>319316562
Warcraft 3 and Red Alert 3 are best for starters. Nice looking, easy to play, and not too complex mechanics-wise
>>319318404
yeas yyeas
>>319318404
So, PA is a true RTS?
Red Alert and Age of Empires 2.
>>319318404
Tzar, Burden of the Crown had some of the best RNG maps I've ever played in an RTS.
>>319316562
Is this the new RTS thread?
I just reinstalled World in Conflict.
Man this game is the tits.
>Banner being a massive fag despite being in command of all the heavy tanks
>HURR PARKER HALP
>Russian guy being all MUH RUSSIA, MUH MUDERLAND and fucking up
>Romanov having to clean up after him
Man I love this campaign. I never liked Wargame after having tried it for a while, I love the detail of Wargame but WiC is just flat out better. Watching the Berlin Wall getting blown up only for glorious Russian tanks to come swarming into West Berlin to remove hamburgers, fucking glorious.
>>319316562
Age of Mythology or Age of Empires 2 are the best places to start; when you want more of the same for Age of Mythology play Age of Empires 3 and when you want more of the same for Age of Empires 2 play Age of Empires 1 or Command and Conquer (any game in the main series is fine; red alert will fuck you in the ass until you git gud and C&C3/Kane's Wrath are the least dated ones in terms of UI and graphics)
If you want something different after that try Supreme Commander (starting with the 1st game makes Forged Alliance's UI harder to understand but you'll learn how to play better; it's a good tutorial more or less) and then move straight on to Supreme Commander Forged Alliance
In the same vein of games there's also WH40k Dawn of War
I just brought Dawn of War on g2a for a dollar. How do I fix the resolution.
>>319316562
I'd recommend C&C: RA2. It's not a true RTS, but it is still a RTS
>>319318404
> Randomizing
> Not making your own
>>319321586
Maybe you'll say that C&C as a whole is not a true RTS?
>>319321586
>>319321792
Except for the non-existing C&C4 that is.
>>319321586
Why is, RA2, not a true RTS?
>>319321078
US HAVE BEEN RULERS
>>319317858
>TA
>Faggotry
Consider suicide.
>>319316562
Warcraft 3 if you don't mind low poly aesthetics is a good place to start, especially cause every unit has a lot of value, and battles make you feel like you're balls deep in helms deep.
Age of Empires is also great if you want massive battles and huge seiges, but I prefer Age of Mythology and Rise of Nations, but honestly all 3 are great.
Idk if RA2 or SC have aged well. SC2 for what it's worth is also a good modern RTS.
SupCom if you're a champion is also good. Im also personally love C&C Generals.
>>319321586
the perfect bait to kickstart an rts thread to life
>>319323462
This is not strategy. This is arcade.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=uuvYP0LZMNg
>>319323984
I played generals heaps although i never got around to installing any mods. do you know any good ones?
>>319324297
Check the last RTS thread that just archived, there was an anon talking about a mod that apparently balanced the shit out of the game.
>every Red Alert 2 multiplayer match ever
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1Y-Qi98WDY
>>319324029
>>319324493
Two people using the exact same strategy does not mean the game is not a strategy game.
>>319324570
But that's not a strategy.
>>319324635
In what way is it not?
>>319323984
I wouldn't reccomended sc2, the l33t progaming scene makes it quite hard to get into as a beginner.
I never played RTS either... whats a good game with no base-building or resource managemen? Instead just mostly combat tactics...
Would that be something like Company of Heroes or a Warhammer game?
I really enjoyed rise of legends back in the day.
>>319325131
Dawn of war 2 has fuck all base building but the multiplayer is apparently set up pure stupid.
>>319325131
Total War is what you're probably looking for; just play battles and not campaign
>>319324961
Are you kidding me? The immense popularity (well, relatively) makes it a great game to get into, because of all the helpful materials that there are.
>>319316562
if you like LoTR, Battle for Middle Earth and it's sequel are pretty fun.
I prefer the first one's campaign but it's sequel has larger unit sizes making for larger battles.
>>319325441
Fucking bullshit how evil guys dont get walls though.
>>319325131
Blitzkrieg
>>319325441
Sauron campaign > Fellowship campaign
>>319325570
Only mordor and goblins were the ones with no walls, but i guess it is because there is a focus on offense for those two, goblin infantry can climb walls and are overall more swarmy and mordor was all about big powerful units.
Anyone want to play AOE 2?
is BFME2 any good? I have it laying around, but didn't really get to play it as a kid
>>319325735
Yes nigga! Also check out Stalingrad and World War I and Cuban Missile Crisis, all on steam
>>319325985
I'm fond of hold out missions, so Fellowship campaign solely because of Helms Deep and Minas Tirith
>where to start
I'd start with C&C red alert 2, or C&C tiberian sun
these are about as old as you can go where things still look pretty, have nice music and have decent pathfinding and controls
they also have decent single player and aren't tourneyfag esports trash
I thought red alert 1 was better, but I went back and the unit pathing was really terrible and unplayable
>>319325131
So Real time tactics or something?
I think World in Conflict is one.
EndWar is good, but I'm not really sure what others think of it.
>>319325441
Is there any way to get this now without disc? Can't see on steam or gog.
Loved playing this game.
>>319319928
I completely forgot this game existed, I bought the box a long time ago, but I don't remember liking it very much.
>>319317858
So you've barely played any RTS games?
Why are you trying to give advice about a genre you have no experience in or understanding of?
>>319318404
Except random maps are not one of the core principles of an RTS you humongous cum guzzling faggot.
Supreme Commander Forged Alliance is the one and only RTS you will ever need.
>>319321243
There's a fix someone posted on steam, google it.
>>319326449
come on anon, you know the answer.
Pirate it.
'course you can't multiplayer that way, but I've heard the first one runs expensive on ebay.
>>319326478
The minute anyone calls Supreme commander a fake RTS they should just be ignored.
>>319324961
Well the way you do it is you play through the campaign, enjoy the game, then go to the ladder and realise how completely and utterly useless the singleplayer is for anything beyond understanding the most basic mechanics.
Then, a few hundreds of hours later, you finally get out of bronze.
What RTS games have the best campaigns? I loved:
Age of Mythology
Battle for middle earth
Dawn of war and winter assault
>>319326632
I tried that, but only ever saw battle for middle earth online. Could never find a promising copy on KAT or PB.
>>319326589
It is pretty good but the fanbase can be insufferable.
>>319326650
It's not only that.
He lists like 5 of the most well known RTS games that everyone and their mother has played, showing he hasn't actually dived into the genre at all.
Like someone who has only played CoD and Battlefield acting like an FPS connoisseur.
>>319326589
It is actually one of the better ones, and it's an unerappreciated gem. If you go download Forged Alliance Forever there's still a community of active players with balance patching, mods, and new maps.
>>319326632
>>319326449
I know you can get rise of the witch king free without a disc fairly easily with little searching.
>>319326901
That's BFME 2 though, right?
>>319316562
Play anything this guy >>319317858
calls a fake RTS.
>>319316562
Play the Stronghold campaign.
Play Stronghold Crusader Skirmish untill it gets boring.
Play Stronghold 2 campaign and skirmish on big maps.
Play Stronghold Legends skirmish and build a werewolf catapult.
Don't play Stronghold 3.
Play a little Stronghold Crusader 2.
>>319326857
Oh right. He doesn't even have stronghold or anything.
>>319326183
Play it, the war of the ring mode is really good.
Although i suggest you get the expansion (rise of the witch king), it adds a shitton of content and is overall better.
>>319324297
Shockwave and Rise of the Reds are pretty cool. Shockwave is finished but RotR is still being updated.
>>319326816
sorry then. I got both of them off TPB a year or two ago after getting a new pc and losing my hard copies. best answer I can give is keep searching.
>>319326968
Yeah.
>>319316562
CnC 4
Supcom 2
You don't need anything else.
>>319325131
Wargame: Red Dragon is almost like that, though you have to take control of parts of the map to get points you need to buy troops.
>>319327070
I have a hard copy somewhere, but it's damaged as fuck. Shame this isn't available to download anywhere.
guys how is that homeworld cash-in by those memefags gearbox?
obviously I'm not going to pay anything for it, but is it any good?
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War
>>319316562
Total War
Shogun 2 is arguably the best from the series but Napoleon had the most fun multiplayer for me and take a look at Stronghold.
>>319325735
I get confused by this game and Sudden Strike.
They both look identical.
>>319316778
>dat Egyptian theme
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1T4UKBST8P0
>>319327369
Isnt it just the same as the original homeworld but with slightly better graphics and actually available?
>>319326474
It's pretty shit actually, given how half the time you can't even lose since you have regenerating resources.
Feels like they tried to make an RTS for CoDfags
>>319327451
>tfw trying to defend that stupid statue>tfw it gets up and wrecks everyone
>>319327451
Yes
>>319317858
Your post reads:
>True RTS games:
>Historic or pseudo-historic RTS games
>Fake RTS games:
>Non-historic RTS games
>>319326589
I like Sup Com, but goddamnit, fuck you and all those elitist assholes that exclusively play Sup Com and shit on everything else.
Here, for anyone who asks for RTS that aren't nostalgia fags creaming for AoE2 or C&C
Prostagma
>>319327435
Forgot Wargame
>>319328029Edemos
>>319328013
that picture is shit
>>319326709
Warcraft 2, Starcraft, WC3 and SC2 all have very nice campaigns.
SC2 story is a bit retarded, going against many things established in SC1, but instead it got cute cutscenes and shit.
Homeworld has fucking awesome campaign and so does the sequel.
Dune 2000 has a cool campaign with live action cutscenes featuring John Rhys-Davies.
MechCommander (1, not 2) also has really cool campaign with a some live action cutscenes.
>>319328013
that picture is good
>>319328191Proseche
>>319328286
>>319328221
Well then, this is confusing.
>>319328279
>MechCommander (1, not 2) also has really cool campaign with a some live action cutscenes.
That's a proper RTT
also rather shit since the AI is retarded
>>319326589
I hate how the actual game is nothing like this - most of the time you just sit somewhere in the orbit, watching pictograms floating around the screen.
>>319328501
>/v/
>>319328286
It's alright i guess, but it recommends some bad-tier RTS and misses a couple of good ones.
>>319328013
that picture is a maybe
>>319328501
it actually is shit, it said something bad about a game I like
>>319328609
You could always not zoom out that far.

Goddamn that intro... what a great way to get introduced to battletech.
>>319317858
>fake RTS games but still fun:
>Supreme Commander
What? That game is the only in your post closest to fulfilling the definition of true RTS
>>319328762
yeah and have aircraft speed across the screen in 1 second flat
>>319325441
only the first was worth playing... for the good campaign. The evil campaign sucked as you were always involved in lolsiege meatgrinders and lacked the overpowered horse archer/elven infantry units
>>319325735
another fun game albeit autistic
I recommend this game, it's awesome, good story and it made me care for every soldier on the field.
Are there any good mods for BFME2?
>>319329431
The movie battles were brilliant from either side though. Helms deep was awesome.
>>319319760
i thought i was the only one who played that game.
it was like the poor man's AoE 2 but in a more fantasy setting
Reminder that a new Age of Empires game is comming soonfor mobile devices!
>>319317858
Troll or ultra-faggot?
daily reminder that age of empires 3:complete collection is way underrated and building your little base/fort is the ultimate comfy
Total Annihilation
>>319328762
then you can't do shit.
>>319330140
Just work with 2 screens, one fully zoomed out and one at a zoomed in action view
>>319326589
>hate 5km rushes
>ladder matches are exclusively this
>can't play 10-20km online because 'no sub-1000 players allowed'
I like launching probing attacks and not being forced to launch all out assaults or die; T2 is where it's at and being forced to play T1 exclusively is the single worst thing about FAF
>>319329610
>saying no at the start
>all those melancholy feels
god fucking damnit
OKW nerf when?
and I don't mean in response to the recent patch, they needed big nerfs before that too
