If they were established characters in some big story and not faceless avatars in a relatively simple plot (and then their outfits made use of in later games), the original classes would probably still be "the face".
The three Mage classes are all iconic in appearance. Almost anyone remotely familiar with FF would identify them.

lol it has nothing to do with the size of discs you moron. making games that look this good take money and time, things that were simple to do in 1997 are more complicated today. FFXIII was terrible for this reason, it took out all the towns and exploration and just made one long hallway to save on money. it's why FFXV is taking forever to come out, making something on the scale of Final Fantasy fans expect is difficult. I don't know where people get the "Cloud was trying to be Zack" idea from. Cloud was emulating his ideal vision of a 1st Class SOLDIER, and the most firsthand experience he had with it was with Zack. He emulates Zack's gestures and body language because Zack was literally giving him lessons on how to "be cool" while they were hanging out (it's easy to miss, but when Cloud talks to that one MP and tells him to "do the pose I taught you," it's actually Zack telling that to Cloud.) Cloud just put himself in Zack's shoes during the Nibelheim incident to complete the mental gymnastics to convince himself he was a 1st Class SOLDIER all along..

Time passes, Sephiroth comes back, he brings down the facade and Cloud regresses back to his old self at first (mostly thanks to Tifa); it doesn't last long though as in Advent Children his insecurities gradually come creeping back and he returns to being exactly as he was before, showing that he's unable to ever completely get over his inferiority complex. He's by far the most emo character in the franchise, deal with it.
