I should clarify that I loved the rest of the game. I'm specifically talking about the ridiculously long Jack and Rose codec conversations.
It's not really worth reading all of those codec conversations. Gameplay is where MGS shines, you can pretty safely just fast forward most codec convos as long as you watch the cutscenes.

MGS V is what the series has always been in my eyes, a game with mediocre gameplay. If you ever actually took the time to reflect on the story or characters you'd realize it's convoluted just for the sake of it and doesn't even connect in some places.
If you want a good story watch a movie, if you want good stealth gameplay go to splinter cell.

I don't think anything else in the series shows this more then the back stories of the BnB gang. They're good for the first 4 minutes or so of the explanation and then every single one just completely jumps the shark. The absurd melo-drama all through out most of MGS2 is pretty awful. No Solidus calling out Fortune does not excuse all the other shit from the rest of the cast.

You can skip the first one, but then again it might be worth it in the long run to just play it. It's pretty good, really.
