The question is does the publisher want to milk a series that is guaranteed to sell by chopping it up in pieces and selling them, even knowing that no matter how bad the pieces are going to be the core audience will buy them all. I don't understand how people could ever begin to think it wouldn't be released in installments. Or do you really think the sheer amount of content in the three FFVII discs could be ported over verbatim to a current-gen $60 release? Do you realize the scale of this project?
They would have had to massively resize the game in order for it to make sense as a standalone $60 game. Skip the padding, skip the minigames, skip most optional content, even drop some of the more important locations and port their storyline over to the available ones. Much like what the Ratchet and Clank remake is doing, only on a much bigger scale.
Glad we'll eventually maybe get a PC version, though. I wasn't that keen on giving actual money to Square-Enix.

Actually they did sorta do that. The PS4 version is literally the PC version but with filtered backgrounds so they don't look all nastily pixelated. Unfortunately the lack of shaded shadows in battle, and the character models on the map being a bit too bright, sorta don't help things. And with the higher resolution rendering, I can literally see the segments of the models.
Kinda wished Square-Enix wasn't as lazy as they usually are with this sort of stuff, a few minor touch-ups besides filters on backgrounds (that don't carry over into FMVs) and fixing the soundmixing could've gone a long way.
