Play Resident Evil Remake.
Then play Resident Evil 4.
From there, you have your options. You could play RE2 after that, or play RE5. The original tank control series and the new action series are almost two different game franchises, but they're still great. Honestly, if you want to REALLY get into Resident Evil play REmake, then RE0 comes out next month. Play that.
And then RE4 deserves your playthrough, but you might not appreciate it as much without having played RE2 (the game the protagonist Leon first starred in).

Depends on what system you have, anon. The first Resident Evil I ever played was Code Veronica for the PS2. Of course, plenty of people utterly detest 5 and 6, so there's that. Also IMO, the first game hasn't really aged well.

Start with resident evil 2, its the easiest and will ease you into the series. There's also 3's easy mode. Remake is generally considered the best but it's tougher than the others although nothing too extreme. 3's hard mode is also up there. Then play 4. If you enoyed yourself then try the others, they're worth a playthrough but as for me 1 through 4 are the ones I come back to and usually play several times.
Not popular but 3 is my personal favorite.

I just beat the remake for the gcn for the first time this year. I absolutely loved it. I had to use a walkthrough though. :( currently playing 4 on gcn too. And holy shit the graphics are outstanding.. The fucking GameCube can put out a game that pretty is an achievement.. I wonder how they did it. TL;DR 1 and 4 but on a GameCube

6 is different from the rest of the games and controls way different. if you can learn the controls and all the counter timings, the game becomes incredibly satisfying but it's a pretty jarring change from everything else up to that point so that's why it get so much hate

This. 1, 2, 3, and 4 definitely. 5 was meh, I haven't played 6. Heard the Revelation ones were pretty good.
I think you might like the RE series (maybe not the tank controls in the first 3 but, eh, they're part of the charm I guess, adds to the suspense). For the most part, it's not zombies running 100mph at you. Hunters and Lickers though, that's another story. Part 4 had mixed reactions. A lot of folks liked that it ditched the tank controls but hated that it added QTEs.
Either way, kick back and enjoy some classic vidya. Prior to RE1, I hadn't played puzzle games, so it took me about a month (off and on) to figure out that you have to take an item to use in another area, but I'm fucking retarded and grew up with basic run right through platformers.
