Problem with PSN+ and similar services is that there's no buyback option. Meaning if I bought my first Playstation this month, there's no reason for me to subscribe to PSN+ since I will have missed out on like a thousand fucking games in the past years. It's less value the newer customer you are.
The other problem is that vast majority of the games are ones that I really don't give two fucks about.

50 dollars is more than I spent on games this year, and I didn't need a PS+ subscription to get good deals on how I spent it. The "dollar value" didn't reach 1,000 sure, but that misses the point: even if I had a PS+ subscription, I would have still spent the money that I did and played the games that I did.
It's a good deal if you "want" the specific games you get for free, which means you either play a lot more than some or you care a lot less about which games you play.
There have been a few games that I enjoyed a lot, and wouldn't normally of bought. I don't find something worth playing every month, but I feel like I get my money's worth.

PS Plus was great back when they first started it and gave you actual good games. Especially if you had a Vita since you'd have more or less every good game on the Vita outside of a couple which are dirt cheap anyway. It was a nice subscription service that actually did what you wanted out of it, gave you decent games for the value. Now that they've suckered everyone into getting it to play online and pushed out enough quality titles they're in full coasting mode and pushing out shovelware on it instead.
