I dunno, the materia system is kind of fun and its an open world game with a relatively interesting story that includes side quests that don't ever have to be done and what not. There is a lot to do in the game and it is entertaining so p e n i s.

It's a good game, unlike Dark Souls.
Nostalgia.
It's an above average game, kind of a pants on head retarded story in a good way at times. Back before the internet gave us a wealth of options for it it was also a great way for teenagers to feel they were edgy and smarter than they actually are because of a story slightly more complicated than Good Guy Rebels fight Bad Guy Empire Army.
It's a good game but definitely not the GOAT so many dumbasses praise it as.

Good atmosphere and mood building from CG rendered backgrounds and one of Uematsu's strongest scores to date.
Materia System is fun to play with and slowly provides you with more toys to tinker with as you progress.
It's just a very well made game.
It's basically FFVI refined and improved upon, and FFVI is a seriously good framework to build a game off of.

1. Because it attempted to accomplish something important and special, and it succeeded.
2. Because for those who go in with the proper mindset, it offers the most enthralling and enriching experience a video game can offer.
3. Because it bleeds inspiration.
4. Because it's fun.
The hodgepodge graphics, minor mechanical flaws, and 4th-act slump do not even begin to chip away at its strengths.

Because it takes you on a journey. A great fantasy journey with visual CG scenes that at the time had no equal. At least not on a cheap home console. It had some really nice gameplay systems that you felt ever more invested in and it just kept tugging you along.

It was my first final fantasy, but I guess the music, combat (easily accessible, diverse if you choose), open world, chocobo races, chocobo breeding, secret areas and just the general art direction it took.
FF9 Although Slower in combat is probably my second favourite with 5 coming third. The rest of the series is diverse enough that someone somewhere will enjoy at least one game. Each game has its pros and cons though

It was their first Final Fantasy. Anyone who started with VI aka III on SNES knows that VII is crap.
Aside from being most peoples first JRPG, it was a very memorable game and had its charms. The characters, setting and music have all become iconic and it is the most recognizable entry in the series.
Not the battle system/gameplay if the reaction to the remake gameplay has taught us something.

Games like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy are memorable because of their length. They took hundreds of hours to play, leaving lasting memories in the children and teenagers who played them.
I don't think most classic JRPGs are actually good games, nor would they succeed in today's market. Obviously Square Enix doesn't either, hence why they completely changed the gameplay of FF7 in the HD remake.

Which is honestly a mistake because they're wrong. JRPGs like the earlier Final Fantasy games 7 included with cartoonish visuals are still great games for kids because it gets them to calm down, and read while they're ostensibly playing a game.
