where did it all go so wrong?
>>
>>318802007
When you realized that open world games usually lead to shallow, repetitive experiences.
>>
>>318802007
You actually got a bunch of "open world" games and realized that if developers give you a big space to explore, that doesn't mean they have time to fill any of that space with anything interesting.
>>
>>318802297

Because developers rarely put effort into details like Roackstar does nor scatters collectibles that unlock new abilities/weapons to reward exploring.
>>
>>318802007
Is that who i think it is?

you realized open world is the latest buzzword used by shitty developers to push some empty sandbox game thats as shallow as a puddle

open world was ruined during the PS2 era when everything wanted to be the new GTA. Games like Jak 2 ham-fisted that kind of gameplay into the game despite doing an awful job on it.

Because video games are about memes now.

Just like how anything with "survival" anywhere in the title tags or description is guaranteed to be garbage.

I'd say you are the problem. You are the reason why we have so much of that shit today.
>>
>>318802007
Because while having a huge world to explore at your own pace was mindblowing back in the day, it is now so common that everyone takes it for granted.

yeah, and at least jak was good. now we have nothing but open world survival games with shallow crafting mechanics, never make it out of early access, and evolve into 24/7 deathmatches and nothing more.

It became the new "Military Shooter" but honestly they're worst niche's to be copied to death. Out of all of them "Open World" is the horse I'm most "okay" being beaten after death.

"Crafting/Survival" games is the one I'm more tired of personally.

You really are a pathetic person. I will continue to advocate tolerance for marginalized groups like trans people on /v/ despite the filth you spew.

Don't worry, I understand you are uneducated. Your views come from a place of ignorance. Maybe I should tell you, roughly 50% of trans people commit suicide and have the highest suicide rate in the world. Part of this is because of society's transphobia. Hopefully you understand it is no laughing matter and you do have empathy.

>>318807746
>Crafting/Survival
I feel like devs missed the appeal of Minecraft and just went with the buzzwords.

To me it was the endless exploration and the "making your own comfy spaces out of your surroundings to protect yourself from monsters" that intrigued me.

Crafting was cool i suppose. With survival the hunger meter just felt like a second health bar.

It's no suprise that mentally ill individuals - and transgenderism is a mental illness -have a higher propensity for suicide.

trannies are literally mentally ill, and you are only enabling their own delusions by defending their sickness as anything other than mental illness

>Maybe I should tell you, roughly 50% of trans people commit suicide and have the highest suicide rate in the world. Part of this is because of society's transphobia
The big reason for that is that they're simply mentally ill and society buying into their delusions is what leads them to commit suicide.

If society's shunning is what's making trannies kill themselves so much, why isn't the same thing happening to pedophiles? (Who btw get persecuted and criminalized more than any other minority in the world)

>>318802340
Yeah, I love me an open world, but if there's jack shit in it, there's no point.

>>318802007
I honestly prefer segmented worlds. Fable: TLC, The Witcher 2, even Mass Effect all have really interesting, detailed areas for you to openly explore, but they're contained so they don't go on longer than they need to and can be filled with shit do see/fight/collect.

As weak of a game as it was, Fallout 3 did an "open" world really well. Yes, it was a stupid, shitty pseudo-Fallout. But the map had all sorts of neat, unmarked shit to track down, little easter eggs to see, and shit to find. I was exploring that map for hundreds of hours.

Contrast that with New Vegas, which also has an open world. I'm not criticizing it because it had a completely different goal in mind with its open world; where Bethesda focused on items, random encounters, and "cool" stuff to come across, Obsidian filled this long stretch of road and chunk of desert with small, shit-town communities, and constant reminders of the power struggle going on in the Mojave frontier. It's a bleak, barren desert, and the only meaning and value it has is what the all the factions place on it, so this shit track of desert is the center of tons of violence and intrigue.

But, barring a scarce few examples, segmented worlds a la Witcher 2, Fable, Dark Souls and a lot of older RPGs do a much better job at giving the player a sense of exploration and freedom than a big, empty map.

Want some spooky woods for the player to explore? Put your resources into making a long, detailed, but CONTAINED area of spoop woods complete with all the sound design that should come with it instead of just putting some dead trees on grid square 13b and calling it a day.

>>318802007
Either Skyrim or Assycreedy 2.75 was the tipping point I think. Where 'open world' turned into 'random collect-athon' or 'goto npc, npc gives generic/radiant "kill all the x's in the y place" quest-athon. Audience got so wrapped up in the "X hours to complete!" stat they stopped asking if any of those hours would be enjoyable or if it'd just be boring samey drag but for so many more hours.
>>
>>318811293
I was thinking of the Citadel. I actually liked the barren planets, though, but for completely different reasons. Made me feel alone in space.

GTA is one of the few games that does open world right because the sole purpose of the game is to fuck around doing whatever, so it serves as a big playground. The world has a very simple function that it does well, plus there's a lot of attention to detail to everything and things are satisfyingly varied.

RPGs are also the number 1 genre where a good open world shines but the only one I played that I liked was Oblivion, and even then it had its flaws like level scaling.

Witcher 3 has hands down the worst open world I have ever seen in my entire life though. A fucking GIGANTIC map filled with fucking nothing, plus exploring it was so fucking unrewarding I could not believe my eyes. Whoever designed this game's loot system should be burned alive alongside the one who thought copypasting 5 or so mob groups/smuggler's cash on the entire map was a good idea.

The Souls games also have a very good idea of open world because it's smaller, but its quality is consistent and level design is outstanding because it's not some randomly generated crap like the other open world games feel like.

Dark Souls is Metroidvania, not open world

You're correct. I always forget the definition of this expression. I swear I must have already read about it over ten times already but I just keep forgetting.

Anyway, this is the best and most interesting way to make games to me.
