I don't think many people have played it, and I'd imagine there are a lot of misconceptions about what it is just from the title.
I also think it's very much a game. Progression and the non-linear storytelling actually require gameplay problem-solving. Even in its simplicity, there's much more game involved than something like a walking simulator. Figuring out how to get information and then figuring out how the story fits together is a lot more involved than merely walking to the next bit of dialog.
I can't think of much like it though, so I'm no help there.

Life is Strange is OK if you enjoy Telltale interactive stories. The early dialog can be pretty cringey, but eventually it does a decent job of keeping your attention with murder/kidnapping mystery stuff. Then the ending is pretty shitty because all of the interesting stuff is wrapped up, and the entire last episode is devoted to something that's been actively ignored in every other episode. A lot of assumptions are made based on nothing because the game hasn't even attempted to deal with the problem prior, a lot of the foundations required for anything in the game to work are left unelaborated, and the finale's emotional payoff hinges entirely upon caring about a character that a lot of people don't give a shit about.

Tales from the Borderlands is pretty cool. Probably my favorite Telltale game because it didn't try so hard to tell me about "MUH DECISIONS" instead was just a fun ride.
All other Telltale games try to create the illusion of choice when there really is none. There is no drawback to always acting like the biggest idiot ever because the story is so linear that it doesn't fucking matter. Tales from the Borderlands atleast is honest in that regard and doesn't create fake tension and is not so serious.
