RE2make happened because the people wanted it, so I'm going to cross my fingers that Capcom understands that what we want is something like REmake, not a complete modernization of gameplay. New puzzles, re-arranged maps, new mechanics like the crimson heads? Hell yeah.

Resident Evil 4 is a great action game, hell it's arguably one of the best action games ever made.
As a Resident Evil sequel or a survival horror game? It falls flat. It takes all of the things I enjoyed about Resident Evil's style and gameplay (The weird controls, the prerendered backgrounds, the crazy convoluted puzzle solving) and throws them right out of the window for better or worse. It's a game that totally delievers, but not in ways that I expect or want from a Resident Evil game.
If that makes sense, I don't know. It's hard to articulate my love-hate feeling towards that game well. On the one hand, it's a fantastic game that I love and replay on like a yearly basis. On the flipside though, it killed everything I love about Resident Evil and destroyed both the series and the horror genre for years by being so fucking good/successful that every game for years to come tried and failed to be the next Resident Evil 4. Even other Resident Evil sequels.

It's because 4 marked the transition away from the slow, clumsy, but more "survival"-y RE games that were more focused around exploration and the occasional puzzle. When Capcom saw 4's success it prompted them to turn RE into a full on action shooter.
By all accounts 4 was a good game though. In fact I think it may have popularized the "over the shoulder" camera in modern action games like Gears or Dead Space. People calling it the worst are just angry about how it lead to 5 and 6.
They'll need to reveal more details before I even consider jumping on the hype train.

I thought Dead Rising 2 was fucking great. The game was a ton of fun on co-op with brother, although adding a second player was a little broken too. I'd say DR2 was a very worthy successor to the first game, and I very thoroughly enjoyed them both.

Resident Evil 1 Remake is an excellent, excellent starting point. The map design, weapons, difficulty, and so on are all top notch, although the difficulty is a little high in comparison to RE2. If you can stand the dated graphics (they're not so bad but they're sure as fuck old) then RE2 is another great game to start with and it's a bit easier than RE1 as well. If you're still having a hard time, give Zero a try. It's easily the worst of the "classic" RE games but it's still really good and by far the easiest so it's a good way to lead you in to the gameplay.
I'd avoid RE3 or Code Veronica until you've played the other games in the series, as those two are a little tougher but definitely still worth playing through.

The problem they'd encounter is that even with all 4 "scenarios" RE2 is really short by today's standards. REmake fixed the problem by adding in new areas, enemies and puzzles.
I'd almost want Capcom to throw RE3 into this REmake as one complete package. They both use the same location and happen within the same few day timespan. They even reuse some areas. Since both games are pretty short, you might as well do them both at once and just make a scenario select option at the title screen.

I enjoy DC1 but that should just be left alone, it was RE with dinosaurs. DC2 became it's own thing and was immensely fun and personally I would love to see that get remade, or a new game based on it.

There's nothing good about Lost in Nightmares, the level design is bad, it only has 1 variety of enemy (which is a bullet sponge pretty much), puzzles are dumb, and it turns into a hide and seek halfway through it, also the final boss is a put off.
Its okay guys. Maybe Capcom won't fuck this up. It could maybe be a decent remake.

There were many more zombies and bullets, so the natural progression of the series was into an action game."

I really have to wonder if we all played the same games. I played this game as a kid and the only thing that scared me was zombies. Because zombies are scary I was easily able to run post 95% of everything in the game without even shooting it. The castle is also really small.
