Balance, of course the weapon that needs you to get up close would do more damage than one that lets you damage a guy yards away from him.
a gun can do a lot of damage but not every gun can. a 22 is a joke and many laugh at 9's. buck shot isnt reliable in terms of stopping power if your not point blank
a sword can hit and cause a larger wound pattern than a bullet if the person is strong and the blade is sharp
guns dont scale. a weak person and a strong person firing the same gun makes no difference on the damage it will do to the target only the user

historically the strength of the user was just as important as his skill with the weapon for military archery since it allowed you to use larger bows and hit targets further away. The independence of crossbows and early firearms from the user's strength was their biggest advantage (in addition to being much easier to train someone to competency with).

Anyone with even a lamen's understanding of physics (like me) knows that a gun typically outdamages a melee weapon in real life, like how bullets can penetrate steel plate but a sword was fuckin' useless against that shit, bruv. Without delving into the physics of it, the whole armor thing should be enough anecdotal evidence right there to prove the point.
However, from a gameplay perspective, it makes sense for a close range unit/character to deal more damage than a long range one, otherwise what would be the point of using anything else?

>a gun can do a lot of damage but not every gun can. a 22 is a joke and many laugh at 9's.
Getting shot with a .22 is literally like having an ice pick rammed into your body.
A 9mm round will fuck your ass up too.
Getting your body perforated with buckshot is going to fuck your ass up.
Whether you're stopped dead in your tracks and killed immediately or not, getting shot in your core mass by any gun is going to greatly inhibit what you can do and without prompt treatment will likely kill you in the vast majority of cases.
Beyond that 9mm hallowpoints have a far more deadly ballistic profile that .45 FMJs and when you compare .45 hallowpoints to 9mm hallowpoints the difference isn't that significant.
Factoring in the greater ammo capacity of guns chambered for 9mm vs. .45 ACP that's potentially more rounds coming at you at a negligibly lower "stopping power" when considering hallowpoints, and even when not 9mm FMJs are still very lethal, so that's all to say that 9mm firearms are preferable and more efficient killing weapons compared to .45s when you load them with hallowpoints.
And it's a lot harder to prevent getting shot than it is getting slashed by a sword and getting shot will wreck your shit.
So no, swords are not more powerful than guns and scaling is irrelevant since guns just plain fuck your ass up.

its also worth noting that any shot in your upper abdomen will be fatal without medical attention even if it doesn't hit your heart.
Breathing functions on a vacuum, when you breath in your diaphragm expands creating empty space that gets filled by air, then when you breath out it contracts pushing air out. If you add a second hole into that system you can't get a vacuum so you'll suffocate unless you can get it patched up.

Sorry I only played it once or twice years ago. Guess it didn't impact me much.
>>318685581
>modifying the gun makes the bullets do more damage
Actually, depending upon the modification, this would have an impact upon the ballistics of the round.
If you compare a similarly rifled 6 inch barrel to an 18 inch barrel, the round exiting the 18 inch barrel will be more accurate and powerful. Think of it like a runway, the round can accelerate longer with a longer barrel.
As soon as the round leaves the barrel the pressure behind it dissipates and the round begins losing velocity.
So, adding a longer barrel would increase the velocity of a round, thus improving the "damage."
So, yeah, that's how it works.
You people with your whole "muh honorable swords" thing going on sound like I did when I was a 15-year-old virgin.
Get out in the world, learn about some things that really matter, and broaden them damn horizons.
What we all need to understand is that weapons development doesn't care about personal preference or what's cooler or more honorable, it only cares about what works. If swords were still viable in today's battlefields, we'd still use them, and I don't know about you but I don't really see any outside of ceremonial use.
Don't get me wrong, swords are beautiful, deadly works of art in the right hands, and they will always have their spot in history, but in today's world they've just been outmoded.
Most people want to do this little thing called "surviving" when placed into a combat situation, and they're going to use whatever weapons platform they can get ttheir hands on to maximize their chance at survival.
Having to fight someone is bullshit anyways, only adolescents or mentally/emotionally unstable people will tell you otherwise, and if shooting your ass with a rifle will let me come home to my wife and my dog at the end of the day, I'd do that every single time instead of risking getting sliced and diced by some jumped up kid with an overinflated sense of purpose/honor.

>You just point and kill someone/something. There's no skill, physical ability, or anything like that really involved.
You've never fired a gun and your logic is literally retarded.
A sword is easier to use than a gun.
If I sat in front of you an unloaded pistol, and told you to load it, and hit a target 15 yards away you'd probably not even be able to get the gun to work.
You'd have to figure out how to eject the magazine, load the magazine, load the loaded magazine back into the firearm, probably try shooting it at that point and be confused as to why it's not firing, and then look for the safety mechanism, find it and flick it to what you think is the off position, try to fire again and still have it not work.
It's not difficult to operate a firearm, but without some basic knowledge of how they work you'll have a difficult time figuring out how to make it even fire.
And then you'll miss like fucking crazy because you don't know how to shoot and will likely miss to the right on every single shot.
If I handed you a sword and told you to go cut a watermelon in half you could do it without any issue.
You would not struggle making a sword work for it's intended purpose at all.
Sword fighting is a different story, but so is gun fighting.
It takes skill to defeat another individual armed with a firearm.
The fact you can kill a skilled swordsman with a gun very easily only demonstrates what a shitty obsolete weapon a sword is. It does not demonstrate that guns do not require skill, only that they're a much better weapon.

He once worked at a convenience store in which he got robbed at gun point. After that he bought a gun a kept it on his side, that is until he thought about it. If somebody tried to rob the store with a gun again and he pulled his gun on the robber, he's much more likely to get shot then if he didn't pull a gun on the robber.
He told me since I was a kid: people who carry guns around tend to get shot at more then people who don't, and if you're in a place in which you feel a need for a gun you're in the wrong place.
He owns some guns and so do I, but we don't carry them around. I can't help but to feel people can benefit from realizing this. Don't keep a gun on you.
>idiot not knowing a stab wound is more lethal than a basic gunshot wound.
It's not the same as saying knives are more dangerous than guns. Also this only stands to a point, when you get up to the right kind of ammo at a big enough size, it starts to blow limbs off the body and is definitely more lethal.

Rifle bullets can and regularly do disembowel people. It depends on the angle of the impact.
Gun shots should always do more damage. Not only will the bullet puncture the victim, but the velocity of the round will also cause physical trauma.
Hydrostatic shock is what happens when a bullet strikes someone at such a high velocity that the impact creates a shock wave that will travel through the blood and cause further trauma. Most notably strokes.
The force generated by a gun vs your sword arm are not even comparable.

>>318692048

>>318692061
might as well be a claymore if you're going to bring a fucking huge ass caliber into the argument
Ranged weapons typically are less damaging than melee weapons, even in real life.
A gun or arrow only deals damage to one location with maximum penetration. Bullet goes in, bullet goes out. A single hole.
A sword on the other hand deals massive damage to a larger area. A sword can cleave off whole body parts and limbs. A bullet cannot.
It's proven with science. Honestly, I don't see how anyone can argue this. The only reason why someone would pick a gun over a sword is due to the inherent benefits of using a ranged weapon vs melee.

Authentic Katanas were made from shitty pig iron. The Japanese did have a nifty technique for making better swords, but it was developed out of necessity and was no where near as sharp or durable as you described.
And newsflash; The Celts were folding steel 100s of years before the Japanese. With high quality metal as well.

swords are way more dangerous. guns actually have to hit a vital, or bone to do enough immediate damage to kill someone. it really just depends on if your trained in both a gun or swords use, really. in police and self defense training they say its like anyone within 22 feet of you could possibly stab and kill you before you can react fast enough to draw and accurately hit them with a holstered pistol. if that dudes cranked on drugs, and you waste that 1st shot on like a leg or arm?

It is true that alot of smithing techniques have been lost or forgotten about, but the japanses were never able to make anything strong enough to cut through steel plates without breaking first.
That's why they never bothered with super heavy plate armor, because a few iron plates and lacquered wood stops a katana just fine

>slow tiny projectiles
Like from a slingshot, or what? I need to know what you consider slow, because I sure hope it's not something that breaks the sounds barrier.
>>318697640
The amount of force you'd have to put on the sword to have a decently deep cut on a big surface is enormous, and the person wouldn't even bleed that fast. If you can't cut vital points, you'll have to do multiple blows to incapacitate and accumulate bleeding spots so the person finally dies. Hitting the heart is actually hard thanks to the thoraxic chest.
Gun shots can penetrate way deeper and hit organs with ease, not to mention they break bones and can ricochet on them to cause less linear damage, it all depends on the gun, but any gun in any time period is way deadlier than cutting weapons used at the same time period.
Anyone got the webm of kittytoes deflecting bullets?

one bullet vs 1 arrow, the arrow does far more damage then a fair amount of normal bullets, excluding silly super large niche calibers or whatnot. its really just having more bullets that makes it better.

Force works the opposite way.
Less surface area = higher penetration
Now here is the thing: When bullets hits flesh, they deform, and partially explode in the heat from stopping, resulting in massive internal damage.
Sure, you might do 1000-2000N a punch. But 500N concentrated into a needle front, will pierce straight trough the body, causing direct internal damage.

Arrows is powerful in a modern war because of the penetration angle, and the fact they can breach cover.
Breach cover: Which is why grenade launchers exists, to do exactly the same.
Look at it this way: Older armies would wear silk shirts over padding, and full helmets if possible. WW2 armies wear anti shrapnel helmets, with various degrees of armor.
Kevlar and silk shirts would be pretty decent against arrows.

No, that post was in answer to "there are people who survived gunshots!" as if no one ever got cut by a sword and survived.
Cutting weapons are strong and efficient killing weapons. But guns are way stronger and more efficient, both by range and penetrating power.
>>318698981

You're arguing with yourself.
>But 500N concentrated into a needle front, will pierce straight trough the body, causing direct internal damage

Depends on the gun.

>>318681330
>not using composite bow
>>318701319
If you apply the same force, a knife will cut the skin and the surface veins, making you bleed, while the needle will pierce through skin, muscle and bone causing trauma. A bullet would crush the bone and effectively incapacitate the whole hand, if not blowing it away, the same way a sword cut could chop it off. Wrists are fragile and slim, you can harm it with anything.
Now, if you're talking about a target with protection, like the brain protected by the skull, penetrating power is way more important than causing some minor bleeding.
>>318695448
Holy fuck underage detected. If the image wasn't enough, hitting anything with a bat will hurt your hands if you are actually swinging it. The bat vibrates and the shock is partially absorbed by your hands. Not sure if it's less painful with a wooden bat, that's a good question. >You can slice things with much less force necessary to penetrate them head one.
It doesn't work like that. At all. To the point where "the sharpest swords" are super circular to compete with the neddles super small impact point.
The reason you don't see it happening is because you don't stab with needles, you don't do forceful motions.
When you use knifes, its because you use extended forceful motions. And that reflects in what happens when you get a accident.
You don't even use 1 N of force to sew. You quickly start using 100-2000 N depending on if you are sawing, cutting or hacking.
>>318701793
>while the needle will pierce through skin, muscle and bone causing trauma
lol nigga what, they literally use needles to inject stuff into bones, muscle and skin with MINIMAL trauma. thats why they use syringes instead of hacking you up with a knife to drop a few drops of morphine in.

You're the one trying to compare a weapon with a sewing utensil. If you want to cause damage, you use a piercing tool that expands in diameter with lenght, so it starts as a dot and ends as a hole. Try with a needle that expands to the diameter of a chopstick, and we'll see if you can still move your hand.
>>318689091

>>318702503
wait i was? i thought i was saying it wasnt a weapon
also, tell me youd rather a knife over your massive gauge needle
>>318702104
A 12G neddle with a syringe as grip can be very damaging if used as a stabbing weapon. Consider surface area and force applied. It's not the same to introduce a needle at a 30-45 degree angle than a vertical angle - that shit will leave you with a very nasty wound. Do consider the girth of the needle, though.
But yeah, dude's retarded. A knife with a proper grip or ice-pick grip will cut anything that's not bone.
Vicious stab wounds can be a lot harder to treat than bullet wounds.
But really it comes down to what sort of gun/bullet, and what type of sword/swordsman.
You are more likely to survive a .22 hitting your chest, than impalement but a 7.62 will put you down faster than a sword wound.
>>318702724
Having a specialized cutting weapon over a sewing utensil? Of course I would. Over a specialized stabbing weapon? Not so much.
If you're fighting hand-to-hand, that matters little. Its properties only shine when sizes get bigger, and that's why spears are infinitely superior to swords.

>>318702985
Gun with a sword, that gun is big enough to blast the enemy sword in half, but the sword's gun is too small to hurt the gun's sword. The size of the swords doesn't matter in this equation. But it's worth noting that proportionally, the gun has a larger sword than the sword has a gun.
Feel me?

You've never touched a bow in your life. Historical longbows fielded for military purposes are nothing like the kind of target shooting bows we see in video games. No reasonably fit adult human will have any difficulty pulling a hunting bow. It's a non-issue.
