Don't expect too much, the combat is the best part because there isn't really a game like it. If the gameplay doesn't click with you then it's not a particularly amazing game. Keep in mind though if you feel like you're not having fun, there are eight other classes to try, they actually play substantially different

Those are two inclinations. Inclinations are some kind of behavior. These two are pretty situational and in general seen as shit. For some reason a lot of pawns end up with these.

Pawns have predispositions you can set for them. Been a while since I've played personally, but Nexus and Guardian were usually pretty shit. The AI isn't good enough to "figure things out" when shit hits the fan, so they'd often just sort of run back in forth in a panic not doing their fucking job, because their type tells them to prioritize the Arisen or other Pawns other everything else, and like 10 things are queued to be done at once.
Medicant for healer always, I remember that much at least.

Honestly the only flaw the game has is that you sorta get punished for exploring. WHile it is fun to explore, revisiting an area again or even a third time will leave you grossly over leveled. I dont usually use fast travel in games, but I felt like I had to start using it half way through, just so the trash mobs wouldnt overlevel me any further

I don't think that's the issue as much the fact the map is pretty small and within that small map you also get fixed spawns so it's not that long until you know everywhere like the back of your hand.
Pretty much any good exploration will hide entire areas away from sight so the moment you stumble upon one by accident you wonder what else is hidden in the world, and suddenly it all seems a bit more vast and mysterious.
The game as a whole would also be cooler if you wonder around a spooky forest and instead of ghosts and goblins as usual you get a fucking Beholder "because fuck you for being out at night, that's why." Bitterblack touched on this with the Necrophage, and suddenly running away has never been a better idea.
Also when you go out at night you mostly get more wolves, when pretty much all the strong, creepy shit should be there to push your shit in immediately so you always fear it.
I guess it's not really worth complaining about as the best part of exploring is the first time you run into new things, and hot damn if Dragon's Dogma doesn't do that well when you meet your first Chimera or suddenly have a Griffin swoop down and wreck your shit. Those moments just need to perpetuate a bit more as you play.

How are you supposed to get to a high enough level for bitterblack isle? I finished everything in the game other than that part, but every time I try to finish it, it gets to the point where I do barely any damage and get 1/2 shotted.

My only real complaint is that random pawns you hire can't grow with you.
I hired this low level qt brown sorcerer and while she wasn't able to help much she had more personality then any pawn I've seen

A pawn has a Primary and Secondary inclination, as well as a Tertiary inclination which they'll fall back to if the first two inclinations don't apply to the situation. They develop naturally depending on how fights go and what commands the player uses, but can also be altered with items.
Some combination of Scather/Mitigator/Challenger suits most pawns because it gears them towards pure combat. Even support pawns will use this fine because you can always use the Help command and they'll buff or heal you.
Utilitarian/Medicant for healing mages. Third inclination doesnt matter but it shouldn't be Scather or they'll get too close to fights and in some cases actually climb on monsters which is hilarious but also very unhelpful.
If you're a Sorcerer trying to multicast with Sorceror pawns then they need something like Mitigator or Challenger and then Utilitarian as a secondary so they constantly mirror you. This is also good for Mages that have offensive options.
Challenger/Pioneer is really good for Ranger pawns where you unequip their daggers as they'll basically become Snipers. If you give a Ranger daggers then they'll just spend most of the time in melee combat with the occasional bow skill. Most people overlook how useful a dagger-less Ranger is because they'll disperse enemy aggro and avoid AoE bullshit such as the Dragon Roar which oneshots them.
Guardian is pretty shit but it can work nicely if both you and your pawn are shield users, combined with Scather.
Pioneer is a pretty good tertiary inclination on ranged attackers as it basically stops pawns leashing so close to enemies/your location. Not bad on most pawns really as it's rare that they'll ever be "too far away" .
Guardian/Nexus are terrible 95% of the time, and Pioneer whilst neutral enough to not be a problem isn't worth the 1 or 2 slot. Inquisitor is pretty useful but when people are looking for pawns to help them in fights (which is all the time) then they won't consider it.

Something I noticed is that Mage pawns with Legion's Might pretty much never fall off as Anodyne's heal is a flat amount and is not reliant on magick damage. And their low health/armor doesn't matter because of Legion's Might.

Most importantly, your Weapon is the priority for Rarefy-ing as if its damage is too low it will barely scratch anything.
If i'm not mistaken, the weapon you got from the Dragon will actually carry you all the way through Bitterblack until you get a Cursed Level 2, as when fully upgraded it will still be better than the Cursed Level 1s.

It's arguably a bad thing to do because versatility and having balanced stats across the board is what will make you strong.

If you like strider, check out ranger and assassin. All three a viable, but you should also switch to different classes. Ranger is basically bow only, strider and assassin have more variety.
Change classes often, you don't need to try all of them, but never play just one. In my opionen warrior is a must for physical classes, his passive skills are great for those.
They are all fun, we can't tell you which you will like the most.

Fighters good to get to level 5 early so you can get Sinew asap, makes things so much easier.
Same with Strider, it's worth to get to level 5 and unlock the Double Jump and Dodge Roll, because there are three other classes that use Daggers so you'll want to have those accessible as soon as you can.
I think starting with Strider is still the best thing though, the right mix of offense and defense, ranged and melee, and you get the most balanced stats so you can hop into every other vocation with no downside.

Generally, you don't need to minmax, that is just aughtism. General rule of thumb is to stick to either strength based or magick based vocations. But, I feel that 30 levels of strider before level 100 is of benefit to any character. Balanced strength/magick/defense/magick defense, as well as decent health and fantastic stamina gains will be a benefit to any build.

Guardian causes the AI leash to be very short which means they'll stand around not doing alot or interrupt useful actions to get close to you. It doesnt even guarantee they'll help you, whereas a Medicant pawn will literally stop everything and prioritise your health before anything else.
You don't even WANT pawns next to you in the first place, so it's just not very good. If you're going for a dual melee set up it might be a bit better but even then the ability to get away from a fight and leave your pawn behind to get beaten up is probably more useful as they'll either warp to you after a certain distance or you can just instantly revive them.
Nexus pawns spend time caring about other pawns and if other pawns faint they'll pick up their bodies and bring them to you - a cool idea but it's easier to just run over and revive whilst your pawn does useful things - and as before, having of your party in one place versus the AoE Rape Monster = not a smart choice.
And considering pawns will be getting killed and then revived alot, anything that assists them is largely pointless most of the time. You can revive them, but if you die it's over, so if a Pawn isnt fighting then its attention should be squarely on you, otherwise even if an Acquisitor is using their time more effectively.
Nexus/Guardian is a troll combo that will lock Pawns in an endless back and forth loop of AI priorities.

Yes and no. The first mission, in which a griffin is a boss, is one of the best and the whole fight at the end hypes you really up.
After this they become some mini-boss, that's hard to catch. They will fly around the countryside and occasionally swoop down to kill the npc you try to escort. But keeping one on the ground to really kill doesn't always work. 'Tis weak to fire, though.
An imposing creature, that doesn't fight that much different than other and gets forgotten afterwards.
