Hell, 80% of any Smash discussion has to do with the roster. The gameplay really doesn't have that much to do with Smash's popularity. Longevity, yes, but they need to establish a base to work with, and if Air Dash Online was any indication, Wavedash is going down in flames.

Honestly, it'll probably do well off the fact alone that Wavedash has former PM members. That alone will probably get a number of Smash players to at least try it out, after that it depends on the quality of the game itself. It basically has a foot in the community before even being made.
Rivals is another Smash-based game that's doing pretty decent.
It won't be getting Smash number sales for obvious reasons, but I feel it'll definitely have a community. If it's good I wouldn't be surprised if it started showing up in Smash majors to replace PM.

it has melee like mechanics, most of the characters are reworked entirely, like Roy and Mewtwo going from the worst characters in Melee to one of the best in PM, and even the Brawl characters were fine tuned to be less janky and better played. It's also way more balanced than Brawl and Melee are.
You can, in fact, play the game on Dolphin using a virtual SD card or an iso builder. There's a guide on the PM subreddit. And you can play PM with just a USB (with vanilla Brawl on it), an SD card, and a USB loader if your Wii is softmodded.

Its not just a Nintendo thing you underaged dipshit. Bethesda and Valve mostly deal with PC which is a open platform in its own and not like consoles which are a closed platform (Each system has the same specs and same build) Mods are so much easier to make on PC and have history. PC developers can more easily integrate modded content into their games and crack down on people who are selling their mods because they have the resources in house to do so
When it comes to consoles, its much harder to modify software, you first have to modify the hardware which breaks Copyright laws in place by the CONSOLE makers (Nintendo, Microsoft AND Sony ALL have these same rules and you'll find that pretty much ALL companies that sell consumer tech like phones, blu-rays and so on ALSO have these same rules) so that's already a no-no.

That's because you're watching tournaments. And two of the most popular stages in tournaments are Smashville and Pokémon Stadium, I wouldn't consider those to be exactly like Battlefield. My point, DI isn't strong enough in PM so, in my opinion, there are too many true combos. Almost every up-throw in the game leads into a guaranteed kill move, almost every down-throw is a Sheik-like chain grab. No matter how you DI, the only way to "escape" is to hope that the other guy drops the controller on the floor or you play as a really light character (which I don't).
I know I sound like a huge scrub but not every character needs to be a monster that can KO you off of one grab with little effort.

Basically, snaking in MKDS added a layer of depth for people that knew how to do it. It made the game more fun because you gained an advantage over the opponent by doing something skill-based (but not too skill-based, you basically just needed to know how to do it and practice it a little bit).
However, it wasn't necessarily GOOD design because it gave you too much of an advantage for something unintended. You could gain half a lap over someone who was otherwise competent at playing the game but didn't know how to snake. I remember playing against scrubs who didn't know how on Choco Mountain, getting to that hill near the end of the stage, and deliberately falling off it to the track below on the third lap and still winning.
Now, one thing I can say is different is, Mario Kart still has mini-turbos that give you an advantage over the opponent but not nearly as much as snaking. Smash 4 doesn't have anything comparable to wavedashing, and even made the air dodge infinite and non-directional (which is another complaint I have about the game, infinite air dodges with no downsides). My point was just that something can be fun even if it's broken, but being fun doesn't make it good design. You could potentially polish it to make it better or remove it, and I think PM made wavedashing more lenient, didn't they? Brawl and Smash 4 removing wavedashing is probably a good design choice though, just sandwiched between a ton of other bad design choices.

Given the fact it was being played at majors for large cash prizes and being streamed on the largest gaming web streaming service drawing in 70000+ viewers during said tournies ontop of regular streaming by popular competitive players who also gain money from playing the mod via twitch ad revenue from viewers I'd say it got pretty popular enough to have a impact on the image of Smash Brothers that Nintendo created with Brawl.
