Are you making a game?
I was
but then I had to do something else!

It's still nowhere close to showing, but damn it I can at least say I'm getting better. It's a damn slow process.
Music seems fun to make, but I wish I had more patience with FL Studio, or whatever makes music.I'm also too scared to start programming.
Yes im making overtale, and ill be the next epic meme.
Been working on a shitty porno text adventure game for a while. Shelved at the moment because of term projects and finals. And also because I'm my own biggest critic.

making a game where you can swap between animals.
Basically space station silicon valley + Kirby + mario
so far its no death
I'm gonna be making a game in which you play as the assistant to a hero. You gather equipment for him before he goes off to dungeons, and collect his rewards from the local towns. At max level, you will only be as strong as a low level hero.

Are you good at google-fu? Know how to find exactly what you're looking for?
You already know half of programming. Most programs are stitched together with code from stackoverflow posts. Even back in ye olde days pre-internet programmers had "cookbooks" with tons of commonly programmed things already typed out and explained.
Hit up codecademy, pick a language, learn the fundamentals, and dive in. If you run in to any trouble, google that shit!
>>318582710
Just make a game with placeholders you can swap out later on. I do that with a lot of my projects until I can convince my friend to draw up some sprites or shit for me.

It's not out yet, but some ratings would help. I pissed off a 2deep4u hipster faggot by telling him he should stop releasing updates for his game that never say shit besides "I'M TOTALLY GONNA GET TO WORK GUYS" (more than 3 a week), and he gave my "game" (still unreleased) a one star rating, and I guess got one of his cronies to give it a 3 star.
advice
>get a real programming job and work on your game on the side so you don't die
>if possible find team mates who aren't autists or cunts so the workload doesn't take a million years
>don't expect your game to take off; if you want commercial success you should make several good ones that aren't necessarily super long
>>318584559
Can make games without knowing how to draw.
Look at stuff like tetris, or roguelikes, or platformers like iwbtg.
Get started making any game. Get involved in other people's projects. Sooner or later you'll either have the connections, knowledge, or money to get art for your games.
>>318583332
thanks. yea i though about doing 3d platformer like this, might do something like that later on
>>318584493
thanks. There are a bunch of animals, each has their own unique skills and attributes. Currently, you can freely swap between any animal as long as you can get next to it.
example, squirrels can climb trees. rabbits can jump highest, turtles can survive underwater and out of water, sheep can float on air currents.
The levels have smaller collectibles and 2-3 main goals per level
Its allowing a lot of fun and interesting level design and so far it's not possibly to die. Im working on possible ways to handle enemies and they may appear later in the game.

Thank god I taught myself C++ at 13 and don't need to use any of the shitty tools in the OP.
I would love to make a follow up to New Vegas but using the old Fallout 2 iso engine. Not really sure how practical that is though. Especially since there are some modifications to the mechanics I would want like weapon/armor modification and such.
Already started writing out some of the core setting and story concepts. Will just have to address engine stuff later.
Obviously can't charge for it or whatever. Just want to do it to prove it to myself that I can, and because I am so utterly disenfranchised with the way the IP is being treated by Bethesda.
Thank you for taking the time to read my personal blog.

Regular arrays or Associative arrays (ex. dictionary, hashmap)? I started a project and got halfway through before I realized it would be so much easier if my inventory objects were stored using a dictionary data type.
I would but I want to make a turn-based RPG with much more complexity than RPG Maker would give me. The issue is that coding a turn-based battle system seems really hard, and I don't know where to begin with it.
>>318585892
>Where would you recommend I start with learning C++?
Not that Anon, but C++ was the first language I thought myself around the same age. I used a mix of learncpp.com and googling "how to do 'x' in c++"
>>318585984
Store them in linked list arrays.
>>318585984
Regular.
At most I have preprocessor macros that help it not be a huge clusterfuck of magic numbers.
The latest bug is when one enemy gets killed on the second time combat is initialized, all of the other enemies become null, and the ghost of one enemy continually exists and causes the deathcount to increase by 1 every turn.
And also they can't die because they technically don't exist.
So now I'm fucking around with a lot of shit to try and get it to stop shitting the bed. I'm so fucking close I can practically taste it.

What do you guys do to enhance your programming ability?
I usually chug a few cappuccinos and smoke a joint, and I find that I turn into John Carmack on speed, making complex spaghetti code that is impossibly fast but I have literally no idea how any of it works.
>>318586072
>coding a turn-based battle system seems really hard
The hard part being programing the AI, right? If that's true, try looking into finite state machines. It might give you an idea of how to program an enemy to choose attacks and such.
If the hard part is the turn-based, then it's not hard. I'd do something like:
while(battle = true){
UserTurn()
ComputerTurn()
}

The thing about idea guys is that unless you have actual game making skills to back up your ideas, you're beyond disposable. If an "idea" and being a freewheeling faggot is all you've got, you better hope the team likes you because they can just take your idea, make a game based on it and leave you by the roadside as their team soars to fame and riches.
Yes actually!
I'm working on something vaguely based on PM&TTYD, but I'm having trouble with partner designs.
For reference, the game is based on a Magitech-level fantasy setting, where the protag and his gang are a bunch of train robbers in the desert lands, until the evil count Eschewilde blows up the train they were robbing and makes off with some mysterious magical artifact. A strange girl and the last born of an ancient Druidic bloodline offers her aid in getting the treasure back, as The Count is going to cause the end of the world if he gets his hands on all the artifacts.
So far I have the Townel Gang (Lindell Townel - the protag of course's train robbing gang), who have the game's knockoff of Tattle and play like the goomba party members, Sylvie (the white Mage sorta chickie) who's field ability can grow dead and dying plants to create platforms and similar, and Drake (A Draconic beastman) who breathes fire to clear obstacles and suchlike.
Combat would be similar to TTYD, except Lindell uses guns and shortswords to fight.
However, instead of badges and BP, you use abilities gained off equipment and AP (as do your various partners and party members) to get skills, in a similar vein to FF9.
Any ideas and suggestions are welcome of course!
>>318594460
You can run faster by running forward for a few seconds, and the sliding is there to keep that built-up speed, as well as for big-jumping.
I don't know if I mentioned that you can big-jump in the demo, but how it works is that you slide for about a second and then jump out of it. Big-jumping puts you at top speed when you hit the ground again, and you go much higher and farther than a standard jump. Sliding is there to make big jumps smoother to perform without compromising speed by crouching.
All this will be better-explained in the final game. The demo has a big enough wall of tutorial text as is.
>>318594924
The fuck is this shitIf you're going to have a character that can steal items from enemies, I'd recommend letting the player get them earlier rather than later, so that they don't have to backtrack to every previous enemy to see what they drop. As well, stuff that's high risk/high reward is always great, like Danger Mario.
I hate ALL these memengines!
Unreal games always looks boring, Unity games aways looks like shit, and gamemaker are pure shit.
>>318596515
That's why Source is the best engine.
>>318596237
Lindell gets Mug on a weapon fairly early, just have to learn it, and his gang is with you from the get-go, and they can also get Mug.
Stat building is just like in TTYD with a choice of HP, MP, or AP every level, with equipment deciding attack and defense and that like.
Most AP abilities for partners are modifiers rather than brand spanking new skills, so you gotta go do sidequests to properly upgrade them like you would with shine sprites and shit like that.
>>318595525
Well it could be faster, but going fast doesn't seem to be a main point for this game, so it's fine. It seems pretty promising though, great music, fun gameplay, and overall good aesthetic.
I steal art (3d and 2d and sounds) then I make games and release them on google play for free.
What do you guys think of this?
I haven't stolen music yet, but only because I like writing my own and also feel like it would take over the style of my game.

But if you acknowledge that is all you are bringing to the table and don't try to be something you are not, is that really bad? I mean some people could genuinely just want to give those people with the skills to see it through the ideas for great games. And maybe be some sort of project management if required.
I agree that if an ideas guy gets uppity and tries to say shit like the game only got made because of them, then they are a fuckwit and not the kind of people needed in the hobby. But if they say they are happy that their idea led to the creation of something great because they were able to find the talented people to see it through to reality, I would want them to stick around.
Kind of like how Alex Garden used to correct people when they referred to Homeworld as his game, and he pointed out it was only completed because of the efforts of everyone on the team.

I'm brainstorming on how multiplayer would work. Like maybe both players have their own timers and try to get points on the same grid, or they have seperate grids and send garbage to the other player's timer (so they have less time obviously, and they chain blocks to get rid of the garbage, but if they chain the garbage-destroying sets into other sets they can send the whole thing at their opponent).

Why thanks for asking OP, yes I am.
I'm making a game based off 5th century Europe. A mix of TBS with MMORPG where players get to pick one of the numerous tribes amongst the Roman territory and fight off for the remains of the empire. We're doing coding and artwork for it right now, and expect to launch it on February.
Even if I had all of the necessary skills what would be the point? Its not like I could make anything that would impress myself if I did it alone and if you get people involved in a project then it will basicallly become something you need to do as a job.
Any of you fucking jokers know how to write music? I'm looking for a composer who can write bombastic fantasy music like this.

AI is the hardest part. I'm completely ditching AI for exclusive PvP action.
I'm making a GDD for a game if that counts, it's more than I've done in a while so it counts to me. Gonna try to make an arena FPS centered entirely around grenades and other "deployable" weapons. No guns, no melee weapons, just throwables and placeables and such. I'm actually coming up with some genuinely new ideas (or at least I think they're new) which is exciting.
>>318601531
You never know what will happen anon. A mate of mine ended up getting us involved in playtesting for a PnP RPG from Fantasy Flight Games. He got this by being a verbose idiot with opinions on the internet, and one of the devs asked him if his group would be willing to playtest. He now writes for them freelance as well. And was even offered a fulltime job over there writing/developing for them, but turned it down like an utter fuckwit, despite it being his dream.
You never know what can happen unless you take that risk. For all you know you could be the next Carmack. Sure odds are extremely low, but you never know until you try.

Its a plot about 2 co-workers hired by the government in search for a kidnapping fiasco, in a world with different species.
Gameplay revolves around the Gunslinger based around kicks and ranged shooting, and the muscle girl based around physical punching, wrestling and weapon swinging
Their chemistry is neutral as they have been co-workers for a long time that casually treat each other like shitnothing too serious because they are both separately married to their significant other
They travel in a piece of shit RV and the gameplay is more like an action adventure but will have moments of dialogue exploration in towns and conversations in general

What engine is best for making a walking simulator? Seems like it'd be one of the easier things to make and I mostly just want to focus on level design.
Should I also consider making my own engine? I know some C++ already, but how difficult/tedious is it making your own engine for a 3D game?
I'm working on the main GUI right now. I can't draw and I can't into good looking colors but I am making attempts. It's probably fine enough now as a placeholder until I bother learning more about drawing things. I want to get back to coding. Making assets are hard even if they are just placeholders for me.

Yeah I recall it sort of kicking off my interest as well. And we were just being casually shown how basic formulas work as some sort of preparation for our future in the work force. Then we actually had to do some programming in Logo. And later I think some other stuff similar to VBA whose name escapes me.
Then later when I was actually in the work force had to figure out proper formulas for myself. And later learned some basic stuff for Access since I ended up cutting out the middleman when I needed some data. Eventually got to the point where even with some insane logic I couldn't quite do everything I wanted to with formulas, and got into VBA for the macros. Even got my employer to pay for a proper course since they wanted to burn budget. Shit was great. Being able to interpret SQL freaks people out as well since I don't actually know it.
I can understand older people not knowing diddly about Excel, but it still confuses me that the younger generation doesn't even know the basics.

>Construct 2
Ma nigga. What license? Personal or Free?
I'm in the process of making a Punch-Out type game, but right now I've just cloned it completely, down to the timing of dodges and punches. What can I add or change to a formula that just involves dodging in 3 directions, left punch, right punch, and Super Punches when you gain meter?
I've considered a jump button which is essentially dodging upwards for really low attacks, but I feel like that would just overcomplicate things.
One thing I think might work well is making the Star-Punch act like the God Hand Roulette, where you can choose different techniques to unleash, like a standard super uppercut, or a suplex, etc.
Any ideas?
>>318613036
Personal. You can't do shit in free.Wait for the christmas/new year sale if you want to get a C2 license now.

I just looked it up after posting that. I remember using GameMaker years ago but it was totally free and it was really only powerful enough for 2D stuff - mostly platformers or top down shooters. I remember when someone posted the first working 3D game they made in it and everyone went apeshit. Apparently GameMaker Studio is just the current version of that same old program

Do you mean with 3D environments and 2D sprites? GameMaker can do 3D, they have tutorials on making FPS games. Something like FFT and TO should work just fine. It's just that it is a much better program overall for 2D games. If you were making a fully 3D game, never consider it.

I don't know offhand, sorry. I've never dabbled in GM's 3D outside of taking their FPS tutorial and making mazes with it years ago. But people have made third person 3D platformers with full camera control, so if you're thinking of FFT style, where the terrain is pretty blocky, that shouldn't be too hard. I just want to make a simple and small game. Been playing the shit out of FTL again and some dakest dungeons. Always amazes me how they pulled of interesting and complex games with such simple mechanics. Sure, art had its charm, but i'm completely ignoring it now and looking solely at the mechanics. I know that and like you said, it's extremely hard to master. It seems anything that I try to do on a similar scale ends up being a full blown copy of another game. and yet they manage to feel unique, by barely using anything. If I could, I'd call it "minimalistic gamedev", where like you said, you take a very very basic core mechanic and manage to make an interesting game out of it. It blows my mind.
>>318622171
Well good luck anon. Remember that there is no shame in copying something existing with the intent to improve upon it. So long as you acknowledge whatever the original was. Not everything has to be completely new and unique. I would argue quite the opposite in fact. People enjoy what is familiar provided it isn't a carbon copy.
So just find something you already like, and see what you can do to make it even better. You can do it anon.

It will be very cheap since the Brazilian government funds games like this. If you don't like DRM, it will be released on GOG and in other platforms. Heck, if we can push that on consoles at 1080p and 60FPS we will (but the focus is PC, Mac and Linux).
