I don't HATE anime artstyles. As a matter of fact, many of my favorite games of all time are JRPGs.
However, I really hate some of the new modern design trends that are now associated with animu looking games. The whole underage panty quest style of game, see stuff like Neptunia and Atelier. Those kinds of games generally do absolutely nothing for me from either gameplay or aesthetic level, so seeing that artstyle on a game is pretty much a redflag for me since most of the ones I've played look and play extremely generic/bland.
I also hate the modern trend of doing fantasy RPGs with super over-designed characters with over the top outfits that really don't mesh with the setting or tone. Modern Tales of games are really guilty of this, among countless others.
I really with Japanese character designers would go back to their roots and relearn lesson number one from design 101: KISS (Keep it simple stupid.)

I think I got into it when I got two issues of shonen jump from the blockbuster when I was like 12 or 13. They were throwing out the previous month's issue so I got that nad the current one.

For me it was power rangers and godzilla that got me into Japanese shit. Then I fell in love with all sorts of Japanese video games before I was completely aware they were Japanese. Then I was the perfect age (around 10) when the pokemon craze hit America. I watched 4kids, which in retrospect wasn't too great, but it introduced me to more anime. I would watch pokemon, digimon, ect. Then Toonami happened and DBZ showed up. I picked up Shonen Jump from magazine stands regularly.
When I was around 13-14 I realized that a lot of the shit I was really into just happened to be japanese.
At that point I became more interested in the culture and country from a more academic point of view.

I'm aware that I'm probably blinded by nostalgia and many of my criticisms against modern anime could easily be applied to the stuff I grew up watching, but the anime formulas and cliches have become really stale for me. It all feels like the same shit. All the action shows are either generic wannabe Big Three garbage or edgy tryhard bullshit. Most comedy shows have become either moeblob slice of life or grossout/ecchi show #12312512.
The same could be said of the anime artstyle itself, which is now (with the exception of a few standouts) almost indistinguishable moving from show to show.
It all feels very safe and watered down. I mean, if that's what modern anime audiences want then so be it. It's a business and that's where the money is. I've just grown kind of jaded and tired of it, and I haven't really fallen in love with a show since fucking Kaiji and that was years ago.

There are usually at least 2 decent shows to watch per season.

The reason why older anime seems to all be longer is, that is what was ported over for us and aired on US TV.
