ITT: tedious fucking bullshit

For all these years I thought "Xen sucks/Nihilanth is a shit boss" was just a meme, but now that I'm actually playing HL1, I gotta say that this shit is really wretched.
>>
>>318448625
Black Mesa Source is supposedly making Xen entirely from scratch instead of remaking it in order to make it not-shit.
>>
Xen is great. Nihilanth is a shitty boss with a shitty gimmick.
>>
>>318448625
>le maymays
Xen is the best part of HL1

>>318448857
BMS is fucking garbage
>>
>>318448625
Xen was the only good part of HL1.
>>
Xen sucks, the only good part is the gonarch fight.
>>
>>318449601
That's also bad.

I honestly don't think Xen is that bad, but it is one of the weaker areas in the game.

I haven't played the game in a few years but I remember On a Rail being particularly tedious and not fun.
>>
>>318449819
I beat it in like 2 minutes, I honestly don't see the big deal.

I got stuck constantly on level geometry, though.

Residue Processing is worse.
>>
>>318449819
At least you can ditch the cart for most of it and just walk along the side of the track.
>>
Everything with the long jump sucks.
Such a lazy yet important thing to drop into the final 15 minutes of the game.
>>
Why does Blue Shift get so much shit? I can understand it being too short, but its level design is more consistently fun than that of Half Life
>>
>>318449985
Really? I remember it being a lot longer than 2 minutes. I might have to play this game again.

And yes, Residue Processing was also one of the more tedious levels.
>>
>>318450240
Well 2 minutes is an exaggeration, but if you know where to go it's definitely not a long level by any means.

>tfw I have no idea what you're talking about because I played as a 12 year old and got lost in the lab hallways and only ever fought a couple of headcrab zombies
>>
Has anyone played Black Mesa since they released on Early Access? I did enjoy the free release to an extent when it first came out, but there were so many problems (mostly pertaining to the AI and some of the level design) with it that I felt it was a disappointment. The potential was there, but the flaws really hindered it.

Have they fixed any of the problems from the first game? Is the AI still retardedly aggressive and accurate even on normal/easy? I remember that big fight in Questionable Ethics after you rescue the three scientists being pretty much impossible due to the placement of the enemies, and the retarded amount of damage and accuracy they have.
>>
>>318451232
tfw got past that fight on FIRST TRY

it was intense but the scientists being in utter disbelief at it made it even better

details like that is what was missing in HL1

>tfw got past that fight on FIRST TRY

Please explain in as much detail as possible how you pulled that off, because no matter what strategy I used I just couldn't fucking do it. Had to change the difficulty all the way down to easy to get past it. and even then it was a challenge.

Maybe I'm just shit.
>>
>>318451545
I think it came down to pure luck, to be honest.

I had full health and plenty of ammo, but by the time it was over I had none of those. Used plenty of cover too.
>>
>>318448625
Only boss I've ever savescummed my way through. I hate every second of it.
>>
>>318449819

I think you've nailed it here. Nihilanth was okay as well, a little bizarre tonally in the greater context but hardly "shit".
>>
>In Half-Life, Gordon Freeman was originally to win the Vortigaunts over as allies on Xen, then lead them to outright rebellion.
Imagine leading squads of vortigaunts.

Would've been fucking awesome.
>>
>>318450165

I thought all the half life 1 expansion packs were well received? I enjoyed them all, but Opposing Forces was probably the best.
>>
>>318450165
Was not designed for PC.

Was just bonus content for the Dreamcast version, but they didn't want to throw it away since the DC port never came out.
>>
>>318452504
Blue Shift as an Expansion Pack was basically just a level pack for HL1, it only offered new levels. No new weapons/mechanics/enemies/etc.
Opposing Force on the other hand is universally praised because it added a good length campaign with new weapons, enemies, allies, and mechanics. All the new things added were fun and interesting too (in my opinion).
>>
>>318452932

Agreed; wish they'd pick up the Shepard/G-Man plot thread for something new.
>>
>>318453639
I just want to know why the G-Man was so antagonistic to him, while also helping him.

The G-Man was pretty much the real antagonist of all of OpFor, and he wins.

>>318452504
Blue Shift was going to be a Dreamcast exclusive bonus, but porting it over fell through and it was released as a standalone like Opposing Force.
Not many players are fond of it because unlike Opposing Force (which was released before Blue Shift), it offered nothing new.
>>
>>318455573
It was the Golden Age of modding, bar none.
Sven-Coop and Natural Selection were so great specifically, I spent most of my vidya time on them at the time.
>>
>>318448625
The only part that I ever enjoyed was the whole forced teleportation portion of it.
Made it a little less boring.
>>
>>318454634
>The Specialists

I am dead inside
>>
>>318456156
But it wasn't forced, you could just as easily sit behind one of the spike pillars and it would eat all of the teleport orbs, then all you did for the fight was kill the Vorts it spawned, poked out to blow his crystals, and then bombard him with everything.
>>
>>318449073
that's wrong though

Damn straight. Every mods you'd try, there were bound to be people. Also nothing beat running around as a Alien in Natural Selection.

Too bad the second one they made is total dog shit with it's pacing

desu I didn't know that

OpFor goes to shit really quickly when you get out of the facility and just start going through flat ground areas with 10+ bullet sponges

Reminder that the best parts of HL1 are everything up to the end of we got hostiles and uplink.
>>
>>318457754
i wish uplink was part of the base game

HL1 feels kind of short
>>
>>318448857

>>
>>318448857
Is [Black Mesa Source[ an entirely different thing than that [Black Mesa] fan-made recreation of HL1?
>>
>>318460842
Nope, the project was originally called Black Mesa Source before Valve said "we're cool with you remaking HL1, just don't put Source in the title"
>>
>>318461121
I'm confused. Didn't BM release as a free HL2 mod years ago? I have it on my Steam gamelist already.

But it's the same thing as BMS for Early Access on Steam right now? What?
>>
>>318458509
There's a mod that adds it back in.
Though their 'seamless integration' is a jarring transition from portal platforming in the lambda labs into realigning satellite dishes.

>>318454634

Man, I used to love that mod. Always hoped it would come to Source.
