I want to play this game but what's the best way. I've been told that buying it on steam is redundant since you need mods. Ive heard about gzdoom and zdoom, but i'm not sure what they mea, or where to get them. Aprreciate any advice. Thanks

If i download this will i still need to download doom inself, and if so would it work with the steam version

Download GZDoom then find the metal OST and or PSX OST.
Download TNT.wad, Plutonia.wad, Doom.wad and Doom2.wad (doom1.wad usually is the shareware version).
onedoom.wad makes it so the whole chapters are like one big continuous map (VERY recommended to those that want to explore the doom levels with more features.
A lot of people hate brutal doom but it adds some extra to the game so do what you want.

You need GZDoom for it and you need the other *.wad files.
The pk3 file is a idTech3 package file, the mod is in it, but alone it won't do anything.

I bought doom3 from some keyseller website and in the doom3 menu you can play doom 1;2 and 3

Since I'm in a good mood (like I'm usually when I get reminded that DooM exist) I went and packaged the wad files so all you need to do is download the GZDoom stuff.
I also packaged the ini file premade for the wads, though I haven't removed some of the settings for wads I didn't include (yay what do those wads do? I better find out!).

Just grab it on steam and play vanilla, vanilla is perfectly fine
