What's the best cRPG and why is it Arcanum
Best ost.
Best atmosphere.
Best quests.
Best setting.
Gameplay is mediocre but that's how it is in all cRPG's.
>>
If that is the best they could do it is no wonder they went out of business.
>>
atmosphere was pretty good but combat was kind of shit and so were the crafting mechanics

the best villain ever or what
>>
>>318430390
Because they have a lot of mechanics behind them? Because turn based and real time with pause works well with small-scale battles? There's a lot of build variety and weapons et cetera?

Like, what's wrong with that? I enjoy a lot of cRPGs for the combat. They're comfy since I can take my time and the number of combatants is limited.
>>
>>318430250

I miss stuff like this

>Gameplay is mediocre but that's how it is in all cRPG's.
Div:OS, Age of Decadence and Temple of Elemental Evil say hi.

>>318430652
nah, he felt incredibly disconnected from the rest of the world even if there was some foreshadowing
its like the game got an entirely new plot in the last dungeon, felt highly jarring
>>
It was broken as fuck although it had a lot of soul and possibly one of small ammount of games that fucking nailed steampunk. Definetely up there with the best of it's era.

My personal favorite will always be either Fallout 2 or Shadows of Amn, two nearly perfect games. I'll never forgive myself for letting some random fuck kill Jaheira with a curse on my first playthrough.

those games have mediocre gameplay, Arcanum's gameplay is downright bad
>>
>>318428598

>>
>>318432496
For something to be mediocre, there has to be something good to compare it to. Go on, describe your good gameplay.
>>
>we'll never get that journey to the center of the earth inspired sequel

>>
>>318433068
there's a wide variety of genres that do tend to have good gameplay simply because gameplay is by far the most important aspect of those games
something that is not exactly true for rpg's

take something like the platformer genre, you're likely to find actual good gameplay among them because quite simply a game in that genre with merely mediocre gameplay simply does not sell
>>
>>318433360
How can you seriously compare turn based combat to the platformer? That's like comparing tomatoes to anime.

So you're saying that the only way to make a CRPG with good gameplay is to make it a platformer, gotcha. Blanket statements like they all have mediocre gameplay when there's no definition of good gameplay is silly.
>>
>>318433618
alright want to talk about actual good turn based gameplay, give the roguelike genre a try

and no I'm not talking about the roguelites of late, but actual roguelikes which fully utilize the fact that turn based combat can give you an amazing amount of options per turn and turn the fact that turns have pause times from a player advantage into a necessity

actual roguelikes are pretty much how turn based gameplay SHOULD be done
the games you mentioned have a severe lack of choices compared to them, and availability of choices is pretty much the only quality turn based combat has this day and age

but if you want to stick to a game where you press one of 10 buttons every turn, 3 of which are actually relevant, be my guest

>>
>>318439789
That sounds tempting. As a summoner, does the minions stay relevantly strong enough in the end game?
>>
>>318439984
They certainly do. Be careful because it consumes mana to keep them up and running so don't run out of fatigue. The last spell in the summoning tree is a permanent familiar. Also get dogmeat because he's insanely overpowered.
>>
>>318440116
Perfect. That sounds neat.

Do the mechanical companions stay permanently too?
>>
>>318440232
They do. You can pack them up and store them in your backpack or they follow you around unless they're destroyed.
>>
>>318440116
to be fair though if you want the REAL minion master experience go mechanics/blacksmithing tech
there is no limit on the amount of tech minions you can have running around at the same time and they actually have quite a bit of variety: medical arachnids are BY FAR the best healers in the game and automatons are nifty little bruisers though a bit expensive to make

and best thing is tech minions actually level up
>>
>>318440415
Really? Darn.

How much dumpster diving do I have to do to get to that point?
>>
>>318439073
Arcanum has a neat story and garbage gameplay mechanics. Tech is severely flawed and the combat, of which there is a fair bit, is straight up awful.

>>318440519
regular mechanical arachnids are incredibly easy to spam and don't require any complicated parts
poison arachnids are just as easy though they do require you to actually find the god damned schematic which can be a PITA depending on your luck
medical arachnids require an odd selection of skills and some dumpster diving to create
automatons are fantastic but require a LOT of dumpster diving, mostly to get miniature steam engines which aside from being rare are also extremely heavy and pretty expensive
on the plus side there's no limits to how many you can build and an automaton is basically equal in terms of strength to most melee companions

12 - Arthur Tyron's Residence

Apparently it actually starts in Tarant.
>Tyron is the next stop in the quest started by Matt de Cesare in Tarant. When you tell Tyron that de Cesare sent you, and when you give him the skulls of the Ren'ar Siamese twins (worth 3100 experience), he'll tell you that gnomes are kidnapping human women and forcing them to breed with ogres, all to create half-ogres for gnomes to use as bodyguards. He'll then ask you to go to Half-ogre Island and find proof of these breeding experiments.

I miss going on grand adventures in games. You explored a detailed and well developed world in Arcanum. You just don't do that kind of stuff in games anymore.
>>
>>318450902
Its actually impossible to choose new spells and click enemies that fast. Anybody who played real time was a melee babby or something similar.
>>
>>318450902
People who played Arcanum first didn't realize there was any other way to do it, and if they eventually found out you could switch to turn-based, they realized there was no point, since it just needlessly slowed things down.

People who were vets of other cRPG's were used to turn-based combat and were immediately turned off by the real-time combat of Arcanum. As soon as they realized they could, they switched to turn-based so that it would be more like the game they were used to.

Again, why would you flip a switch to make the game worse? The only reason why people use turn-based is because they've become accustomed to that crutch.

They're called haste spells. You can stack the fucking things. Put them on the dog and he'll clear the screen before you even realize you're in combat. Turn based is for faggots that can't abuse the system to bypass the worst part of the game.

You're potato won't be able to handle it. That shit is actually pretty demanding cause of all interactions. Age of Decadence runs on toasters so you might try that.

Why don't modern RPGs have special dialogue for low INT characters?
>>
>>318454738
Tbh, me and my friend have been doing a low int playthrough together, and its the funniest thing we've done in a while. Every time there is a character interaction, we bust out laughing, and combat is piss easy with a 24 strength ogre.
>>
>>318439787
Kill yourself, senpai.
>>
>>318454738
Fallout New Vegas is the latest one to have it iirc.
>why
It takes work and creativity, you have to re imagine several dialogue options and rewrite a bunch of stuff.
>>
>>318454738
>Ok John you need to write more text for low INT chars
>What does low INT change?
>Absolutely every dialogue
Compare to say, high perception chars, which at most get 2 new options in a given dialogue.

Why the fuck can't other devs do low int dialogue choices like this? Why is it that games related to the Fallout original devs only do this? Really disappointing that we don't see this more often, as it's an easy way to add replay value
>>
>>318455258
But the idiot is usually the player character, who tends to have no voice.

Start as either a pure talker or a pure fighter, going hybrid without understanding the game is a guarantee that you'll get wrecked. Actually you'll still get wrecked. You just have to understand that it doesn't run on typical cRPG logic, you're nobody special, you die just as easily as pretty much any other character in the setting. Can't grind either, every source of skill point is hand placed.

Half of them are just "Ooga booga" "Fuck off retard". Only a few dialogue trees are actually significantly different and the same length as the original.
