What do you guys think of TV Tropes?
>>
It's autism: the website, but I sometimes go there to kill time if I'm really bored on the bus or something.
>>
>>318397246
good concept but its failure was inevitable considering the only ones dedicated to keeping it up to date are massive spergs or autists who need to shove in their faggotry into every article
>>
Nice time killer.

Some stupid shit, but whatever.
>>
I don't go there.

I remember a few years ago when people would post tvtropes links, people would always say "there goes my afternoon" and it just felt so fucking forced and stupid, I never bothered to go.

It's shit. Take any kind of plot device or character detail you can imagine, it has some silly name there. And then it justs lists uses and subversions. It also ironically stifles creativity by suggestiong you can make a good story just by piecing tropes together.
>>
I used to browse it but it's kind of ruined every form of media I indulge in.

My mind actively points out and predicts fucking everything now.
>>
>>318397715
I'd really like to think anybody who's looking to write a good story isn't learning about narrative structure and such by reading fucking TVTropes of all things.
>>
>>318397692
You're not even far from being right
>>
>Kickstarter was nearly a year ago
>still don't have that feature they promised where you enter a work and it lists similar works based on the number of tropes they have in common

My inner autist could play around with that shit all day. Gimme it.

This is a site that at one point, does not even bother listing Master Chief or any other important character in their own page.

The entire internet is inside jokes. Stuff that's only funny to anons on 4chan, stuff that's only funny to Redditors, etc.

TvTropes is more of the same, but critically less funny. Smeared on top it has this flimsy veneer of edutainment. Like it's teaching you about things in an encyclopedic fashion. Except the entries are just more inside joke bullshit based on casual observations of pop culture writing and cliches.

This is how a typical tvtropes article reads, everything in quotes is a link to more of the same bullshit:
>The "large ham" "lampshade hanged" their "played for laughs" "genre blindness" which turned out to be "Harsher in Hindsight."

It's inane drivel, often based on common industry terms alongside completely made up shit for the site. It's knowyourmeme but more circlejerky. On tvtropes, "circlejerky" would have it's own page, but be named something stupid like "through the roundabout."

I sometimes do this too. It's a nice way to kill a bit of time if I don't have anything else to do, and sometimes you find out something interesting about a game/show.

>>318398935
>the point is that tropes are the foundation of fiction
This is incorrect. It's like saying that Classical mythology is foundation of art. No, narrativity is the foundation of fiction, while all tropes are entirely disposable.

You can't become a writer by reading up on TV serial cliches with funny names. You have to actually understand the underlying concepts of narrativity, tellability, newsworthiness, fictionalization, defamiliarization etc. etc. etc. etc. to be able to write properly.

>This Troper, due to a mix of "Love is beneath me and Love is a distraction". He has more important priorities now than just a relationship: Unlocking the mysteries of the human body or allowing for the infinite potential of the human race to be unleashed seems to be a far more important task. Love however is only for a fleeting moment. What matters most in one's life is leaving behind something for future humans to use. People who left only children behind with nothing to their name, those children were known as Proletarians, and they were not looked upon positively in ancient times.
>Very true. Although unlocking infinite potential of the human race is pretty much impossible since we already know everything science can tell about how a human body works. It's not much, but genetics have reached a dead end years ago. Even though more recources were wasted on in th the past few years than in the last 40 years put together. That said, I sense a potential Mad Scientist. Let me know if you're looking for an Evil Overlord to work for.

A second best girl loves you so much she'll tear you apart and remake the world so that you and all the people she used to call friends could have ordinary lives even if they'll all end up hating her in the end.

But truly best girls learn from their mistakes and relish the short time they have left with their loved ones while trying to be stern but fair to friends who've lost their way.

Good storytelling is more of a talent that comes naturally/with talent. You can't really learn it through researching definitions and concepts.

It was a fucking joke ten years ago and is even more so now.

Condescending autists got addicted to the high of telling everyone what to do in their Digimon/Final Fantasy crossovers or whatever the fuck else was on Fanfiction.net. This was a fucking sport to them, they literally trolled for new releases and pounced on it for some imagined greater good.

Eventually they made an entire website cataloging their annoyances since they weren't being obeyed every time they vomited unwanted assistance all over the review section.

Mainly because they weren't talking about actual sexual themes, but shit like some kid in Dragon Tales bending over.

Same reason they removed This Troper in a lot of cases. It kept the autism to a minimum.

Literally wrong. Most successful writers in this day and age do not write "well".

Furthermore the ones that write well don't necessarily follow any rules.

If you think writing is a science rather than an art you don't know the first thing about it. The foundational texts that birthed most fiction weren't written with rules in mind either. The closest you'll get is obsession with meter, not obsession with whatever babble you mentioned.

Not that TVTropes is worth much of anything (especially these days; I feel like it was a little better a few years ago, but that might just be my memory being shit), but the concept isn't too far from the idea of motif-indices, which are pretty useful in the analysis of things like folktale.

Arguably, this Troper is probably the youngest of which who suffers from this Trope. This is practically the invisible label that’s under the invisible Berserk Button of this 13-year old kid. He broke 33 pencils in his life, and had a good friend break two of those pencils because they were too hard. He even yelled at someone because that guy was the third person who asked if he could be punched for the third time, with a teacher only a mile ahead!

Demitri has more impact on the plot than she does. He was the one that brought the conflict in Makai to a climax by attacking Belial, he was the one who defeated Pyron, meanwhile Morrigan does what? Fights people because she likes to fight people, and there's some vague mumbling about how her potential power is so great?
>>
Some what decent, as it has some good classifications of "tropes" hard to name in any other form.

But some times shitty. People using their head canon to add tropes in works, people who didnt understood the works at all claiming it to be stuff it isnt...

So, the concept is good, but people screwed it up.

Also, some different naming. What we call on 4chan a "cuh-ra-zy" game, they call a "spetacle fighter"

You're full of shit, is what I'm saying. I assure you that Homer didn't know the "basic prerequisites" of narrativity. That's why I'm calling it nonsense.

And I see that you've degraded into pathetic "I'll quote him sounding like a baby" arguments, so I guess this is done. I went to uni over this bullshit and my takeaway was it's all bullshit. I don't see how I'd be ignorant after doing so well, either. The only thing knowing all that crap will "help" you with is writing essays, to fellate folks who've come up with it and need recognition (as Academia demands it).

In the end, maybe most writers DO know your so called "prerequisites", but I assure you almost none of them "learned" any of that. Storytelling began as an aural tradition, for fuck's sake. You can't learn a talent.

TVTropes is autists' paradise. I like it. I sometimes drop by to read what details they dug up about some game or film I liked. They tend to be very thorough about every little thing. I used to binge read their wiki, but thankfully I've learned to control myself a little better since then.

I heard their forum is awful. Good thing I don't go there.

Troperspeak is annoying. I don't like all those unclear names they give to repeated cliches they've spotted. "Dropped a Bridget on him" is one such example. I get the reference to Guilty Gear in the name, but come on.

Also, I don't really get the point of that wiki. I don't think it actually helps anyone write better fiction. I do think it's just mostly there for people with autism to have fun listing every little detail about their favorite works of fiction. I think they like that, and to be able to show off their encyclopedic knowledge about this shit in a suitable encyclopedic format.
