It felt like a chore at time, but that is usually because of some dated gameplay elements
Otherwise is full of charm and great ideas, that are especially surprising for an old japanese game
I played it over the span of like half a year, but it was worth it in the end
It's more like a journey or adventure and less of a generic JRPG
Also it can get pretty frustrating at times

Just finished it, was pretty comfy to play on my phone
The world felt a bit stretched and empty here and there but it was fun, musics were nice and the plotline was enough to keep me interested, yet its not a game that should be played a lot in one go
Pretty easy all the way through as well, only had problems with Kraken since it 1 shotted everyone who didnt have the Flame Pendant

After finishing it I couldn't get it out of my head for months.
The story, tone, themes, and soundtrack are all way ahead of its time.
The feeling of home, and growing up, and moving on really fucked me up. I can't shake it. It's still stuck with me.
Also I abused the fuck out of save states on the wiiu. I would suggest doing the same.

If extremely traditional JRPG gameplay with interesting/quirky presentation seems like something you'd be into, sure.
Combat-wise it's basically old-school Dragon Quest with one unique mechanic (rolling HP meters) that ultimately doesn't matter that much a lot of the time, and it's sorely lacking in depth and character balance. Also inventory management sucks ass. The thing is, everything else about the game is really good if you like its kind of offbeat style and sense of humour. It's worth a go at any rate, just keep in mind that the gameplay's not as interesting as you might expect, considering the game's insane following nowadays.
Mother 3 is leaps and bounds ahead of Earthbound in the gameplay department, so you should definitely play that afterwards. Although inventory management still sucks ass.
