This is just like saying George Lucas made the original trilogy of Star Wars, as well as the prequels. Both men had people that could veto their bad ideas, and kept things good with a working system of checks and balances.

Just because someone created/discovered something great doesn't mean that they are going to continue making great things/discoveries. There are countless examples of this in almost every field.
He got lucky. That's all there is to it. When he tried to change things up, he failed.

With Super Metroid, before casualization was a big thing, he was a pioneer of many casual game design techniques which are now ubiquitous and expected in any video game. Again with Metroid: Other M, he was ahead of the curve with his use of extensive story, cinematic design, and easy filler gameplay as glue for a cinematic experience, and now that's become wildly popular as well.
