Assuming they're both the same speed, I'd take the sword over the sign even if it was 65 or 70 damage. Any higher than that and I might sacrifice form for function though, depending on what I was fighting.

I prefer the balance of swords. Hammers always swing too slow and risk getting parried or interrupted. A nice warpick is the only hammer I'd throw down with.
