Undertale is the best Bullet-hell shmup of the year by far.
>Gradius
Literal garbage, not even any bosses, 2/10
>Gradius 2 NES
Excellent, instant classic, not even that hard, 8/10
>Gradius 2 ARC
Bullshit difficulty near the end, otherwise unremarkable, 6/10
>Gradius 3 SNES
Inferior port of the best game, 8/10
>Gradius 3 ARC
The indescribable pants-shitting terror that is every passing moment of this game simply has to be played to be believed. This is the essence of Gradius. The mere notion that Level 7 and Level 9 was meant to be beaten by a human being is so ludicrous I smile just thinking about it. 10/10
>Gradius 4
Bretty gud, 7/10
>Gradius Gaiden
Good but too easy, 9/10
>Gradius 5
Still playing but probably 9/10 so far
I remember wanting to play Viper in the arcade for the longest time but I don't have any quarters to spend. Many, many years later, I end up buy and playing Einhander and thought how fucking cool this game was.

>>318321758
this got me thinking, how could developers make shmups appeal to more people?
the obvious answer would be to keep costs down as much as possible so you can sell it for $5
also it seems like games with easy difficulty options can do pretty well on steam
but even then, the average person doesn't give a shit about being able to 1cc a game, so they see less value in the game since it can be beaten so quickly. really can't think of a way to overcome that though
>>318322763
My answer isn't gonna please you: Do like Undertale but less shit.
Make the gameplay about dodging stuff, but surround it with something else.

>>318323129
>it's impossible to make a shmup appeal to a wider audience and still be a shmup.

>>318320265
Literally almost every shmup has the best vidya music. It's impossible to list them all. The only way to list them is by naming companies, pretty much.
So Konami, Taito, Technosoft, Irem, Toaplan, CAVE (pre-PGM), Nichibutsu, and more.
And this isn't even in particular order, though my personal favorite lately has been all of Metal Black.

But both of those have existed in roughly equal numbers since the 90s.
>>318322763
1. Item Shop with Ship Customization like Mars Matrix and Ginga Force. Have components able to be either purchased or found by hitting secret spots in the stages. Ship Customization changes the physical look of the ship and can have its colors altered.
2. Selectable pilots with Create-A-Character slots available. Have their faces and those of bosses be visible in auxiliary windows in the game, like Otomedius. However, unlike Otomedius, have the characters actually fucking react to things going on in the game. Have them look to the left or right when things are getting shot down in those directions, have their faces scrunch up when squeezing through bullet layers, have them freak out on taking damage.
3. Have the backgrounds do something other than exist. If the background is some kind of factory setting and ships get shot down over it, have chain reactions of explosions on the factory background occur based on what the downed ships impact when they come down.
4. Have a mode like RS Saturn as well as having no life counter to stop play. Allow the player to grind levels as well as always get to the end as long as they want to. Give a tally at each end showing how many lives they would have lost, and compare progress to past plays.
5. Allow at least one camera angle which would essentially be over-the-shoulder third person.
tldr - Give as many RPG trappings as possible in alternate play modes as necessary. Give characters the players will want to identify with. Get them comfortable with the idea of playing a shooter and let them decide if they want to go for legitimate accomplishments after they get over the grinding and other bullshit trappings.

>3. Have the backgrounds do something other than exist. If the background is some kind of factory setting and ships get shot down over it, have chain reactions of explosions on the factory background occur based on what the downed ships impact when they come down.
Too distracting, the less shit going on in the background the better.
>5. Allow at least one camera angle which would essentially be over-the-shoulder third person.
Under Defeat had some camera angles like that. They were mostly for show as the game was practically unplayable like that.

>Too distracting, the less shit going on in the background the better.
The point is to appeal to casuals. Casuals could not possibly care less about playing a game against a featureless black void in the background. The sensation of having all the explosions and chaos occur in the foreground while the background is a static wallpaper image feels artificial and disconnects immersion. Casuals want to feel like they are totally wrecking shit in the midst of a giant war, so give it to them.
>Under Defeat had some camera angles like that. They were mostly for show as the game was practically unplayable like that.
Two dimensional planar movement feels entirely too restrictive to casual players who play 99.9% of everything else in a 3D setting. When I was working at a game store and I had Mars Matrix set on the demo display, the most common reaction I heard people say out loud is "Oh, it's -this- game", as if they had played it before (and no, they hadn't, because I had the Japanese version before it was released in the US). I also heard a child say MM was "one of those games where you can only move up down left and right". Again, the point would be that this would be an alternate allowable camera view or mode which is meant to entice casuals to even play the game at all. If they like the game enough to play more beyond using it, great. If not, at least they might have felt compelled to try it as opposed to all the shmups on Steam now and otherwise which only a few thousand people buy (which are the same few thousand people who buy all of them).
>>318328768
Calling it belong in the genre is stretching it.
It's just bunch of anime characters used for fanart and porn.

Reverse. A shmup with non shmup modes tacked onto it.
Of all the people who still praise Radiant Silvergun to this day, how many of them do you think never bothered to play the game in any mode other than Saturn mode?
Casuals want to fill bars, mode in three dimensions, and never be challenged. I'm just trying to answer the question as best as I can.
The other shorter of response that, by nature of the genre, it is impossible is just as valid.

>>318330797
>Reverse. A shmup with non shmup modes tacked onto it.
If the non-shmup mode is meant to be the main attraction then it's the other way around.
>>318331540
I remember someone posted sales numbers for Nintendo series once. Long story short no, it isn't a big deal in the grand scheme of things. Though I guess it sells a lot better than most shmups, but that might be by virtue of being a Nintendo 1st party title.
Would a game with huge customizable options like Tyrian work as a properly balanced shmup?
The only game I can think of that has that kind of variety would be Steredenn and it doesn't quite have a particularly great feel to it.

you joshing me? gradius 1 has lots of bosses
Shmup newbie here
How do you know when to bomb in a game like Mushihimesama? Got the game recently and everytime I die I feel like all my bombs are wasted.
Also, so far I have played Gradius 1 (NES), Gradius 3 (SNES), Hydorah and Mushihimesama. What other games should I get into my collection for the near future? I like both vertical and horizontal styles so far.
>>318336516
Just bomb when you feel uncomfortable or plan it so you use them in segments you suck/hate. It's better to waste bombs than to die with them unused.
>>318336516
Treat the bomb like a panic button and as if you have unlimited stock. The more you play, the more you'll know when you're in too much thick and need it. It's important to keep playing and see as much of the game as possible in the mindset that you are trying to reach the end in the single credit.
Look for Crimzon Clover on Steam.
>>318336516
If you're a newbie, every time is a good time to use a bomb. Whenever you think "oh shit I'm not gonna make it", use a bomb.
Part of becoming good is using bombs less and less often since they lower your potential score gains, but it's still better to bomb than to get a game over.
As for games, Crimzon Clover is pretty cheap on Steam and also excellent. There's also Ikaruga which is quite popular.
Any good 3D on-rail shooters recently?

How's Gradius Rebirth?
>>318339085
Recycles a lot, but very good.
Has quite a bit in common with the MSX and Gameboy games.
>>318339010
Is it ever challenging? If not then it just feels like filler.
>>318339513
As I said, it's not gonna challenge you like Mushihimesama or Garegga would, but it's decently challenging at times.
Hey guys, I'm making a 2.5D SHMUP.
Any things you guys LOVE seeing in SHMUPs and stuff you HATE seeing?
>>318339513
Its were all the game's difficulty is derived from, so it's definitely not filler, but if you're frequenting this thread right now and have played quite a few shumps, you wont ever have a problem.
The hardest boss however, is like a platforming wall bullet hell, which is pretty interesting
>>318339748
parrying mechanics

>>318340007

Fuck. The mechanics and design of that were so insane. The ability to like parry incoming shots by swinging weapons you'd ripped out of enemies. Fuuuuuuuuuuuck.
And failing that you could punch out hulls with the manipulator arm and change your thrust.
Too ahead of its time for its own good.
And the soundtrack.
>>318340270
So no start up speed and no slowing down to a skid.
How the fuck do you get good at this genre? My friend recommended Radiant Silvergun and Mushihimesama Futari and I have no clue how people do it. It's so hard to focus with so much going on. Any tips on how to git gud?
>>318340754
Eyes on your ship when shit gets real so you can actually dodge with precision. Other than that, just practice.
>>318340082
Make 4th dimensional pocket shit, default parry bounces shit back, bomb+parry stores whatever it is and is thrown back as bomb with priority over enemy bullets
Villager's curahzy space program
>>318340701
Correct. Also make sure bullets follow the path that they are shot. I don't know really how to explain it but if a bullet is shot in a certain direction make sure it goes in that direction and doesn't slightly drift to left or right.

People who play for score just think of the number. Like that's all that matters, just increasing the number. You're playing with a different set of rules, that's what playing for score is. You're playing a game of tee-ball, I'm playin Home Run Derby.
I mean you play however you want if you think that's fun, ruining the game. Just go ahead and ruin it. You can pretend you like it if you want. I won't stop you from pretendin.

I much prefer vertical shmups. it 100% has to do with the player movement. I feel like I can't move fast enough in most horizontal games

Nah thanks. Especially if they're generic animu designs. I remember seeing a pic of Winbee posted in one of those DA cringe threads, I think it was by the same guy who did the big core pic, where Winbee was drawn in a more humanoid way and had the old Konami logo on her ass. Now if THOSE were the character redesigns, sign me the fuck up. Also

Bullet Sponges
Sine Mora is an example of what not to do
>>318348575
Regular enemies or the bosses? Or both?
>>318348652
regular enemies
Sine Mora's problem is that if you had no power ups, everything was a bullet sponge.
It's an issue of timing, in that you don't want the player to be bored fighting some small guy for longer than a second if that. With bosses, the same issue applies but with bullet patterns. You don't want the player dodging the same thing for about 30 seconds, you want to mix it up and apply pressure, and that's where multt-stage boss fights are almost always seen in shmups.
>>318348652
Both
Having the bosses in Nanostray 2 last for like 4 minutes just repeating the same bullet patterns with little variation got tiring.
>>318348990
Gotcha. How many hits per regular enemy would you say is good?
>>318349110
Lots of bullet patterns or multiple stages.

Just go play Mushi and Crimzon Clover to see how it's done. You'll gleam much more information from studying the source material directly than asking for suggestions here and there. Honestly, if you want to make a good shmup you should already be intimately familiar with good shmups.

I am but I'm not just copying 1-to-1 what my favorite SHMUP does, you know. And besides, there's also developer blindness. I might think I'm doing things right but getting reminders from the crowd can still prevent things that I might've forgotten/not realized while working on the game, you know?
>>318350270

>>318350270

>>318350270
>I am but I'm not just copying 1-to-1 what my favorite SHMUP does
Don't copy it, improve on it. Crimzon Clover takes a lot of inspiration from Cave shmups and it ain't a bad game because of that. Unless you have a brilliant new idea for a mechanic or gimmick that's never before seen, you're going to end up referencing other shmups anyway.
>there's also developer blindness. I might think I'm doing things right but getting reminders from the crowd can still prevent things that I might've forgotten/not realized while working on the game
Get other people to test your game and give you feedback. Developing a game entirely on paper is not easy, a lot of things that seem like good ideas might turn out terrible when actually implemented, and vice versa.

Dariusburst on the PSP had 3 ships, 11 stages, and 8 bosses.
Dariusburst AC was a remade version of the game for arcade with 4 ships, 12 stages, 12 bosses, and a new game mode with 16 more bosses and regularly added stages, along with redone assets and the ultra-widescreen resolution.
AC was then expanded into ACEX, which has 8 ships, 24 stages, 30 bosses, and new music.
CS is a port of ACEX which has 9 ships, 40+ bosses (exact number hasn't been given), more new music, and an unknown number of arcade stages and "over 3000 chronicle mode stages".
The original Dariusburst and AC are entirely different games and AC's expansions only widened that gap.

I do hope they're a bit longer than what I've seen, though. Dariusburst PSP stages were generally around 2-4 minutes long, while everything I've seen of CS each stage is only about 1 minute before the boss.
>>318344746
I personally like the fact that horis are equal parts level design and enemies as opposed to "welp, let's just throw a bunch of shit on the screen".
I like bullet hells too but I'm a more horizontal sorta guy.
Gonna do a game jam pretty soon and I'm planning on making a shmup where the only meter score/health-wise is a timer that is always counting down and is only refilled on level clear or by picking up the things enemies drop. Your shots also drain the timer (slowly for basic shots and more quickly for specials). Is there anything like this already that I should play for ideas/to see how to (or to not) do this? Any thoughts on the mechanic?
>>318344746
Now that I think about it, while there are some exceptions like Ikaruga, horizontal shmups seem far more focused on stages actually having stage design and environmental hazards while verticals are entirely about just enemies. I'd say I like vertical more in general but my favourite shmups are horizontal ones.
>>318384525
Sine Mora used timer as health in a similar fashion. It's also complete garbage.
>>318384525

What's your opinion on Psikyo's shmups (including the pre-Psikyo Aero Fighters)? I find them challenging even if the bullets aren't very dense, and I enjoyed the characters when there are some. Spanky the dolphin is silly and Tavia is my waifu.
Is the hitbox in Strania the entire mech or just the center?
>>318341902
Is this Time Bokan PS1? I don't remember with the stage.
>>318376938
The thing is, in shmups, it's all about optimization. Choosing the best route through bullet patterns, chaining a stage nonstop, not dying, etc. This all comes down to memorizing the stages because unless the enemies are randomly generated(and no shmup that I know of had done this. Would be interesting to see though), the layout is going to be the same everytime.
So once you've completely optimized your route, there's pretty much nowhere else to go.
In fighters, yes there is optimization, getting as much damage out of your hits as you can but you also have to worry about an unpredictable opponent. You have to worry about mixups, resets, etc.
Fighters just require much more thought than shmups. Shmups are still fun but the skillsets just aren't comparable.
>>318383446
What game is that? Is that fucking Giga Wing?
shump is a dump genre
>>318387101
Well yeah, you have to dump a good amount of time to git gud at them.
>>318385637
Comparing fighting games to STGs is like comparing sportacrobatics to karate. Both require skills.
>>318320809
>>318319398
what about pausing/unpausing to phase through walls in gradius?
What is a good starter shmup for someone who has never tried one beyond five minutes? The only two I know of are Truxton and Touhou.
>>318385637
>Fighters just require much more thought than shmups
High level play in fighting games is very often simple as fuck. It's all just projectile spam and some occasional devastating combo.
>>318356793
I like Bullet Heaven.
>>318387365
Bullet hell? Mushi, mushi futari, deathsmiles
>>318379961
>$50
Can't say I'm surprised.
Also can't say I'm going to buy it before a 75% off sale.
>>318387365
Raiden series
or pretty much any 90s arcade shooter you can get on mame
>>318387365
Syder Arcade was alright, maybe a little expensive for what it is though.
>>318380873
Yes, but at least the boss rush is easy. Although being forced to go through those 10 minutes before repeatedly dying against that absolute onslaught of bullets near the end is probably going to drive you insane. Like for real.
>>318325441
>>318328569
Give me literally one fact on why Nuclear Throne isn't a shmup then retard
>>318317459
I've been thinking. What are some fantasy-themed shmups?
>>318392002
to me you need auto scrolling to be a shmup
nuclear throne is a twin stick shooter
>>318392375
But the starter/trendsetter of the genre was Space Invaders, which didn't have auto scrolling either.
Additionally twin stick shooter still falls under the category of shmups.
TALK TO ME ABOUT GRADIUS YOU FUCKING FAGGOTS
>>318392889
Gradius is dead
>>318392889
Just watched a speedrun of 3, it looks intense. I've only ever played the NES game and lifeforce.
>>318392948
THE LEGEND NEVER DIES
>>318391364
It's one of those parts where you really need to follow a strict route to get through it, even the smallest deviation will probably set off some kind of domino effect that gets you killed, even if it isn't immediately apparent.
>>318393012
3 is absurd, do you have any means to play Gaiden? Most people consider it to be the best place to start, it's what got me hooked.
>>318393086
The bosses or the stage? I mean, the bosses have a pattern so you can't deviate too much but the level is too goddamn random to do that anyway.
>tfw my IRL name is Darius
>japanese penpal asked me if my parents named me after the game
Atleast people don't ask if I'm a LoL champ anymore.
>>318393181
It's mostly about taking out those hatches in time, you're fucked if you let them spit out a bunch of enemies because they just cover the screen in bullets immediately. Only problem is the developers put most of the hatches in stupidly awkward hard to reach positions.
I'm especially bad at this stage.
>>318393873
The pink path before is all kinds of fucked up too so you can't put your Options into proper position. I'd say it's the third hardest stage for sure although the proper Missiles might make it a joke.
I really really hate that last segment with the regenerating walls.
>>318393863
Do you atleast like crustaceans?
>>318393863
How insensitive, everyone knows alexander killed your parents.
>>318394163
Yeah, if you die at the end getting those speed ups you need for the escape segment is really annoying.
>>318394620
I WAS MADE BY THE GREEDINESS OF MANKIND
The only thing keeping me from playing more Gradius 3 is Vaif, or more precisely, I can't beat him without the Tailgun and I can't stand waiting out bosses.
>>318394206
As a matter of fact I do.
H-hiya /v/.
Do you love me?
>>318395105
As a matter of fact, I do. SEGA Shooters don't get enough love in the west, probably because to us they're The Sonic & Bayonetta Company
Was it Salamander that had LORD BRITISH as its main ship, or am I thinking of something else?
If it is, it gets LORD BRITISH/10
>>318395105
>japanese defender
I never really played it, which version is the best?
>>318395498
Fantasy Zone II DX > Super Fantasy Zone > Fantasy Zone
The DX ver. is a re-imagining of what FZII could be if it was legitimately released on the System 16 arcade board and not the SMS.
Steer clear from the SMS versions. They're shit.
The 3DS ports are fucking amazing and they're the only legitimate way to play FZIIDX on the US (as 3D Fantasy Zone II W).

The 3DS versions.

Thanks, I already heard good things about the 3DS ports of classic SEGA games.
So like when are more CAVE shit is coming to steam?
mushahimeama is great even though it's not mushahimesama futrari
I'm hoping for any of the Dodonpachi games but mostly the first as it's probably my favorite to play
>>318396713
It's possible, since there is already a 360 port of DDP buried in some kusoge they made
>>318396713
We don't know yet, but at least two more games are planned.
I've been playing Twinkle Tale, a Megadrive vertical shmup very similar to Elemental Master you can walk (and face) in any direction, but the levels only scroll on a particular path, i.e. it's basically a vertishmup where you ahve to push forward to scroll the stage. Three seperately upgradeable magic attacks you can switch between at any time and initially excessive difficulty that feels much less intimidating when you've got the hand of the spells.
>>318396897
>>318396919
what games do you want to come to steam? I know i can just emulate, but I want to support cave on the best platform
>>318397090
All of them, eventually, but Ketsui's my #1 hope.Well, #2, but I doubt we'll get an HD remake of Dangun Feveron in my lifetime.

>>318396063
Is it actually fucking happening?!
>>318397239

been meaning to play that, is that any good? I mean I guess it goes without saying since it's cave, but it looks similar to DDP so I'll try it out

is their any way to check what joystick I have?
I know it's a Seimitsu LS-XX. It's short and stiff compared to the Sanwa one in my Tournament Edition stick.
