There's a lot of thought that goes into weapon use and enemy types making the gameplay really interesting as it changes radically depending on the guns and ammo you're given.

There's actually closer to dozen different enemies, and as many guns, and the "thing" is that you fight hordes of HUNDREDS of enemies, usually at once, all alone.

It's simple yet nicely challenging, brutal fun.
What comes to the SS3, it's a damn brilliant example of PC exclusive done right. It looks and runs great, has HUGE options menus, Versus and co-op (16p online, 4p splitscreen), mod support ... AKA, pure perfection.

And obviously the game really does not take itself seriously at any point, no matter how gritty and gory things get.

I loved every SS game, but after playing BFE I even liked the cartoony SS2 more. The reason is without being ironic, it's too serious and it has the same problem as the very first encounter, it's only set in egypt and makes it super boring. Maybe it's because I haven't played any FPS past HL2, but I'm really not into it, feels like a military shooter with a lot of gore. To me, the appeal of completing levels were the cut scenes and finding secrets and I am kind of missing it in BFE. Sam is just not the Duke, but it feels like he tries to, if that makes any sense

then your opinion is not valid in any kind of way.
Jesus christ you cannot imagine how fucked up the genre became after 2005. Video very related:

Plus, SS3 was a FAR superior Doom3 & DNF than the actual games themselves.
>>
>>318329576
What are you even trying to say?
Sam was always a parody of Duke which were both parodies of SUPER SERIOUS FPS anyway.
>>
>>318329861
I don't see how my opinions is any less valid of it not being as fun as the prior games, just because I haven't played every game of the genre since. We are talking Serious Sam and running to an enemy and pressing E to instakill it in an event feels dumb

Hard reset was pretty playable. Same with new shadow warrior, the same game in china town.

Major negatives are comic book plot and single player only.
>>
>>318330318
Instakill-length is about the only legitimate complaint.
But it doesn't matter anyway because most of the time you'll constantly be swarmed by hordes and trying to prioritize what to kill first.
>>
>>318330318
The instakill move is literally unusable later on when you got 300 enemies swarming you from all sides. Which is a good thing; many other modern shooters and games make you INVINCIBLE during those "take down moves", just so you can watch the fancy animations in peace.

The SS3's melee system is pretty much the Doom's fists, beefed up to that comic's "RIP & TEAR" levels.

>>318330356
those are just small exceptions in the rule. And not too surprisingly, all three of these were also published by Devolver Digital.
Though I found the new SW to be just boring and quite badly designed in general. Doesn't help that the devs were also SJW fags preaching about "muh racism & sexism!" in the original SW3D, boasting how they'd gotten rid of that for us.

not him, but my problem with Hard Reset is that the game insists on locking you into arenas with "Do not leave" invisible walls surrounding it everywhere.

Which was very disappointing for someone who bought it expecting the doom and Duke Nukem experience.

exactly, and that's why they're idiotic hypocrites as well.

Then again they apparently didn't understand that the original SW3D parodied the old asian Kung Fu and monster films, just like DN3D did to western action and alien flicks, and BLOOD to horror classics.

>>318331253

>>
>>318331389
>game insists on locking you into arenas with "Do not leave" invisible walls surrounding it
Which is unfortunately what the new Shadow Warrior does as well. Instead of semi-open maps with multiple routes and plenty of vertical movement, you instead move in a linear pipe, only to get stopped by an arena fight.
>>
because i hated serious sam 2 and never bothered to play the others

you literally played the black sheep of the series. Only those who were underaged and owned it for their Xbox Fat as a kid tend to even "like" it.

>>318331694
True that. It's just damn hard to demonstrate or prove it to people who've not even played the game.

One of the clear improvements BFE did compared to TFE/TSE was to make the "Machinegun" and "Minigun" separated weapons, using their own ammo. The MG, now the M4-lookalike, obviously replaces the Tommygun and packs decent punch + accuracy, but the slower ROF and need to reload after every 40 rounds make it a much more tactical weapon. Minigun obviously packs more punch, but eats through its (more rare) ammo faster. In the original SS games, there was very little reason to go back to Tommygun after you get minigun.
>>
>>318331623
Each of the 3 Serious Sams is very different in style, you can't judge the whole series by one game. The first one even has HD remakes.
>>
Man I fucking LOVE Serious Sam 3. Its the first one I played so I went back and got the HD remasters of the first game and I cant believe how awful it is. The level design is just so boring and 90% of the time you're doing something extremely mundane. When the action ramps up its great but SS3 is such an improvement even if it too still has boring moments and awful first missions. The series as a whole would be so much better if they didn't make every level an hour long. Its like they're padding it out with boring shit when all people recognize the series for is the high points.
>>
>>318332817
Honestly I got bored a lot playing TFE, but since I don't play many pure FPS I thought maybe that's what was boring me.

I've never given any of the other games in the series a try, maybe I'll try SS3 now.

I very much appreciate the fact that it runs natively under Linux.

The environments should've been more varied, like in TSE, not just Egypt again.

Tearing apart hordes of the enemies I blasted away in TFE many years ago, rendered with good-looking modern models, that really makes for some nice nostalgia.

Not just the first missions, I think I made it all the way to the second-to-last mission. It got to the point where I would boot up the game, play a single mission, and then quit because I was getting tired of it. Then a couple weeks would pass before I wanted to play again.

I still don't think I've beat the final mission.

>>
>>318335232

Sprinting is bad in Serious Sam. It casualizes the game even more and makes it easier for people to run away from enemies instead of getting punished for letting enemies get close in the first place. BFE is a pile of shit. It's the DaS2 of the SS series.
>>
>>318335232
>sprinting
There was nothing wrong with having a fast movement speed in the earlier games. Sprinting is just an extra button to press. The only thing it's really useful for is gaining some distance between a kamikaze as to not get hurt by the explosion.

>>
>>318335647
It doesn't casualize shit.
Sam is an impossibly tough hero, theres no reason why he should not have the agility to match.
And running away hurts you a lot of the time and it's nothing like COD because you'll still get hunted down and also cluster more of them together while losing ground.

But they're rarely just by themselves, and when they are, it's an absurd amount that can fuck you really easily if you're not careful.
Or they'll come from all directions a lot of the time which will pressure you to sprint not realizing they're faster and then once you realize they're all too close, that's it.

Sprint is fine.

Croteam Owns.

>Or they'll come from all directions a lot of the time
Unfortunately, "enemies coming from all directions" is a rare thing in BFE. Lot of the time you can abuse the shit out of sprint, especially since the arenas very rarely close the doors.

>One of the best FPS by one of the best devs
That's actually Croteam's worst. Foer their best see every other Serious Sam game.

3 is okay, but it needs to be more Serious with a capital S and less serious with a lower case s, you know what I mean?

>$5 for 10 extra games
You'd be stupid not to get them all, even if you only end up playing the 3 main encounters.
>>
>>318341693
Gold is dumb, you dont need Gold

but you do need all the games

>used to dislike SS2 but the different levels have like the second encounter a huge diversity and was fun
>was hyped for BFE and turns out to be just as boring as the first encounter set in sandnigger cities and caves all game
>>

If you don't already have the older games, you'll want them. They're the best. So all the games, bruv.
>>
>>318342521
>just as boring as the first encounter

Garbage taste. First Encounter is the best one. Fuck Second Encounter and all of its SUPER BOUNCY FUN TIME novelty levels. Save the novelty shit for secret levels. Don't make them take up the entire campaign.

>First Encounter is the best one.
Had the best last level, too.

CTF and instagib are best modes.

>Implying
You can run BFE on a smartphone and get a stable 30fps going while still looking decent, your laptop will be fine
>>
>>318312869
just bought it and I love it any other shooters like it?
>>
>>318343813
Doom slaughterwads.

Painkiller, except not really.

Will Rock, except nobody liked it but me.

Flying Wild Hog games, except they're not very good.
>>
>>318343934
I enjoyed these opinions.
>>
>>318340000
Any deathmatch is fun, fuck off.
>>
>>318312869
Any way to get it to not run like total shit in splitscreen?
>>
It has some of the most awesome music. Perfectly fits the games.
>>
>>318312869
Well it's made in my CUNTry the least I could do is buy it on release date.
>>
>>318326281
You must be new. /v/ loves Serious Sam, the old games are much better than 3, though.

I disagree with the first encounter. 3's first 4 levels sucks though but once you get to the sandy area with the houses shit gets good.
