Cross Rumble focused on the casualised flight controls and had that garbage manoeuvre system from Sky Crawlers. Automatic dogshit. Ever since AC6 they've been increasingly moving away from proper Yaw/Pitch/Roll controls and it's killing the series. Even when you turn on classic controls back on in the options they work like shit compared to 6 and everything before it.

No it wasn't. The battles were way bigger and they actually gave it the real atmosphere of a war rather than just being one super-pilot vs an army.
The gave actual choice in objectives during missions, and the gameplay was downright the best in the series.
The only thing I'd criticize is the story cutscenes, but the in-mission chatter and characters were great.
I'm in, as long as it's set in Strangereal.
And isn't a multiplayer game. Campaign co-op is fine, but fuck Infinity.

The scale was cool but the performance was bad, the missions weren't very well designed, the enemy pilot AI was immensely downgraded, the campaign was short and their attempts at super plane/facility boss fights were poor. In general it undid a lot of the progress that 5 and 0 made with campaign and mission design, pilot AI and additions like High-G and Allied Attack were fairly gimmicky failing to actually add much to the game of meaning.
I like it a lot, but it was a definite step back from 5 and 0.

Namco/ACES has a habit of coming up with fun gimmicks, and then never using them again.
I liked the unlock system of 5 (Even if it took a bit too long), the Ace system of Zero, the different battlefield objectives of 6 and the routes of X. A combination of them all would make me orgasm with the force of a thousand suns.
As long as it'd be done well, that is.

Played em all and I don't remember anything in 5 and zero being noticeably better at all, including bosses and AI.
Actually all Ace Combat bosses have been easy, but Chandlier on the harderst difficulty was certainly harder than the end-bosses of 5 and 0.
Mission design in 6 was great since it frequently had you working together with familiar allies (air commanders, Sea commanders, tank battlions) and you could choose which ones to assist most of the time.

6 is good but nowhere near as good as zero.
Zero had a memorable villain; brilliant story flavour; the focus on the rival squadrons and piecing together the plot from their reactions fighting you was great.
6 had Pasternak who was bland. The wife who was bland. Only interesting character was the old colonel.
5 had the strongest cast; but the villains lost momentum after the first half; Ofnir and Grabacr weren't memorable.
4 had another strong adversary, and it was great seeing the story from his point of view (albeit through another character's eyes) and the consequences of your actions.
TL;DR 6 was the weakest of the modern ac games.

'Boss enemies' or 1v1 fights against 'skilled' characters tend to involve crazy weapons slapped on planes and them just outright outperforming the player's planes (the AI is kinda allowed to cheat sometimes) until you find that opportunity to shove some machine gun shells/missiles into them. The final boss of Ace Combat Zero, in addition to missiles, also has a laser weapon on his plane and can drop a massive bomb in midair that produces multiple explosions. He zips around pretty fucking fast and may spontaneously avoid shots that seemed like they should've hit any other target, and once you've 'hit' him a couple of times it turns out the plane is protected by a jamming system whose only weak spot is the front air intake, at which point the fight turns into a jousting match of sorts where you're forced to face him head-on and fire at him from the front while avoiding his shots. This is probably the most complex example, but the gist of it is that Ace Combat doesn't really give a shit about realism and goes with what makes for fun arcade-style gameplay.

Too bad it jumped up its own asshole with the insane amounts of grinding, and a retarded fuel system that lets you play a cumulative total of maybe twenty minutes out of every nine hours needed to restock fuel credits to the maximum, if you didn't score any bonus fuel and didn't sink money into microtransactions.
I just want strangereal back. They broke the series trying to incorporate unnecessary bullshit. 6 was okay on gameplay mechanics, but had a shit story. Assault Horizon was just fucking mediocre in all aspects.

I became a huge fan of the series with 2. I liked 3 and also loved 4, before this whole strangereal universe came to be known, people just speculated that games 1-4 were set in the same universe. 4 is essentially a re imagining of AC2 before it was officially same universe, which started with 5.
I started to not care much about the series with 5 being super overly dramatic hollywood bullshit super ego stroking (4 had slight ego stroking, but it wasn't hollywood bullshit story and presentation at least). I still played the shit out of it and tolerated the grinding of new planes. I even ripped the music from the game and put it on that one ace combat forum before OSTs were released.
I think AC0 was great gameplay wise (aside from the choose your moral thing, sort of dumb IMO). I didn't care for the FMVs nor story (which is less hollywood, but still dramashit).
I played the portable games a bit, but stopped becuase I couldn't played them comfortably.
6 was graphically awesome, but everything else was shit, especially the story. I also hated the large maps, but terribly designed missions.
I personally didn't hate AH. The story was a mediocre action thriller rather than dramashit like the past game, which I didn't dislike. I didn't mind DFM, but I loathe the helicopter missions. Not a bad game, but I wouldn't say it's a good game either. I didn't care that it wasn't set in strangereal, becuase I liked the series before all that shit.
Never played the actual AC2 remake on 3DS. All I know that it doesn't have fire youngman (which to me is quintessentially ace combat, not anything in 5 or 0) in it, and that is a terrible sin.
Infinity plays fine I guess, but I found no enjoyment in it at all. Just seems like a lazy effort.
You know what I want? A proper translation of AC3, or better yet, just remake the damn game.
