I guess. It's nice to have some new factions to fight against. Portugal is the only one worth playing as.

Is this an actual expansion with new game mechanics or is it just $10 for literally the same game with different sprites?

That was The Forgotten (or AoF) which literally WAS a mod. You can still get it for the original game.

African Kingdoms has voice acting in the campaigns (unlike AoF) and also introduced some new universal changes to HD's expansion dataset such as more techs, Fire Galleys/Demo Rafts for Feudal Age water wars, and Siege Towers (unlike AoF).

The new civs are quite decent

And here is an interesting read about how some of those who made or managed AoF approached Microsoft to get their mod as an official expansion.

Making fan mods into official content may seem like a gay thing for some but the modders themselves must be pretty fucking stoked to get to work on and support an older game.

Assuming they keep making expansions, do you think they should add new mechanics? I mean, we've practically hit the limit of what the normal unit model is capable of, there isn't really room for more units along the lines of anti-archer infantry, anti-cavalry infantry, anti-anti-cavalry cavalry, anti-gunpowder anti-anti-infantry infantry, and so on. Adding aura units in the form of lieutenants or something would be pretty unique.
>>
>>318258865
What's the anti gunpowder unit.
>>
>>318259035
Condottiero
>>
>>318258865
I would like more features in regards to the interface. Adding attack move is nice, but I'd like to see the number of each unit type I've selected like in AoM than just individually, in both regards to my own and other's units.

I liked the shift-click movement in AoM. In fact, AoM has some nice interface changes in general, the idle military banner and the idle villager one only appearing when the condition is met are some others. In AoE 2's case, make the idle vill button appear gray or pressed down until there's one actually idle.

Seeing the number of villagers/trade units on each resource would be nice too

>>318259035
Condottiero, a unique Italian infantry unit from AoF. If you are allied with an Italian player, you may get them as well as it is their team bonus.
>>
>>318259516
A better interface is never wrong, though you can't sell an expansion only on that, and new civilizations are getting pretty scarce. I mean, they had to add the fucking africans, next addition might as well be the finnish or the north american indians.
>>
>>318259516
>>318259684
Also, just curious, but would it be possible to implement strategic zoom in a 2D sprite-based game like AoE? Obviously adding it now would not really be a good idea.
>>
is aoe2 still worth getting if i missed out?
>>
>>318259752
I think AoE II HD has multi-monitor support, like a huge mini-map or something on the secondary one? Do you mean something like zooming out all the way in SupCom? That game has some excellent interface shortcuts.

Otherwise yeah, we're pretty brassic on new civs to add.

>>318259880
It's a classic dude, there's always somebody keen. Worst case scenario, check if /v/ wants a game. Last night I got my ass kicked in a four-way battle.
>>
>>318259880
It's still a great game. Slightly dated, but the RTS genre hasn't really gone that far since.
>>
>>318259947
>Do you mean something like zooming out all the way in SupCom?
Yeah, just scrolling out from normal view to the entire map, with everything in between. I almost think it would fit even better in this game, because the engagement ranges on Supcom were so huge I mostly got to look at icons even when fighting.
>>
Holy shit. Is this the longest AoE: AK discussion /v/ has ever had since this game was released?
>>
>>318260194
If anything AoE 2 would probably have to be remade entirely into a 3D game or something to support a feature like it. Maybe AoM could support it, but even the Extended Edition didn't change much.
>>
how is aoe2 better than 3?
>>
>>318260323
There was one the other day that was smart enough to use a picture of a Teutonic Knight to avoid the WE WUZ KINGZ posting. I got a game out of it at least.

>>
>>318260329
>If anything AoE 2 would probably have to be remade entirely into a 3D game or something to support a feature like it.
You really just need to get the engine to support sprite scaling.
>>
>>318260329
The code for AoE 2 specifically probably can't support it, but is it possible in a game with the same style as AoE 2? It almost seems like it would be possible, since the playing field is basically a flat image with smaller flat images moving around, if you just scaled them down like when shrinking an image in photoshop, and then replaced them with ultra-zoomed out icons beyond a certain limit, it seems like it could work.

Also, it would be cool if they implemented certain randomly generated terrain features that shared a resemblance, like how you in real life have mountains, but also mesas, cliffs, giant boulders like ayers rock, ridges, etc.

My mistake, still makes them useless if you can't take your main cavalry force into your opponents base because they'll drop like flies. They also not classed as cavalry anymore since the forgotten and they have poor pierce armour, so archers still do pretty good damage against them and are still their best counter. They're actually viable now, and Indians look like they might make a decent civ now with those eco buffs and the Imp camel. Elephant archer is still junk though.
>>
>>318261932
Didn't they do some balance changes in 4.4 regarding the elephant archers?

But yeah, the Camels still aren't as much better at being a raiding unit, but at least they're not going to drop dead immediately.

Yes they did, they buffed the base Elephant Archer but nerfed the elite. They also took away some armour, but gave them the imp archer armour tech, which ends up at a net 1/1 armour increase, but you're paying for it. It might be something you might not even get the chance to research, leaving you with less armour then you would of had in the forgotten.

Basically, Elephant Archers are a waste of time and money. Their expensive, not tanky enough to go at the front and their too slow and lack the range to sit in the back.

>>
>>318262486
You could in the earlier versions of the game 15 years ago or whenever that was. And you could also upgrade them to better roads so that your units could move more spaces along them at a time. Like you could start off with dirt roads and then rail roads and so on.
>>
>>318262486
No real need in a game unless your milking it into a 4 hour + stalemate by being more concerned in making a pretty base than actually winning. Go fuck around in the campaign creator.
>>
>>318262836
If you made it basically free and somewhat rapidly constructed(only costing an idle villager), you could gain an advantage in map mobility over your opponent in the long run. Only for long games, but the imperial age fulfills also fulfills a late-game function so it's not like everything has to give you value instantly. And they're roads, not pavement, no good reason to coat your base in them.

>Now, what was the reason we got the market to fit in with the other buildings in the end? Once again, two important reasons. The first one is because of the way Ensemble Studios created their buildings. In the 90s, 3D modelling wasn’t as evolved as it is today. Each and every object was created individually, down to every brick in a wall. Which is exactly what we did. The straws in the thatch roofs on the Feudal market are all modeled individually.

Doesn't seem THAT hard, as you can see if oyu look closely they just modeled like a dozen grey rocks, arranged them into a pattern rectangular, copied the pattern and pasted it around the model. I'm pretty bad at modeling but it doesn't seem like modeling a bunch of simplistic objects and pasting them in a pattern on what's essentially a box should take more than a lazy day of work if you're skilled. Obviously planning, errors and such would extend the time but that's part of all models.

>>318263016
That sounds great, really. Trade some worker time=resources against more mobility for your units. You could even think about them also boosting your villager speed, but then they'd be mandatory after the critical mass of villagers have been reached. In castle age you?d have stone roads which would boost your units even more, but the drawback would be losing stone- which would make the resource more important again, since it's currently of the least importance in most games.
>>
What's this that I'm hearing about fellow Hun players becoming cancer?
>>
>>318270207
>THE BLOOD ON LA HIRE'S SWORD IS ALMOST DRY
>>
>>318270209
Regarding stone roads, I think dirt roads to stone roads should just be an upgrade costing stone that applied to all roads. Having to lay out dirt roads, then re-lay stone roads that also costed more resources would be incredibly time-consuming. The inca could get free road upgrades.

Also roads should only be able to be destroyed by enemy villagers, little flags hanging from poles on the side could signify the ownership of the road. You'd need to improve the pathing mechanism to account for variable travel time when determining the most efficient path, or roads would be pretty useless.
>>
I think roads could be doable, their 'building' could work like a farm. If you check out farms in the editor they're pretty much blank buildings that change the terrain underneath to the farm terrains. So a road would essentially be a smaller farm-like structure that modifies the terrain to road. Enemy units can destroy it and then it changes into the "broken road" terrain, just like the farm changes to a dead farm.

>>318270341
>ANOTHER GLORIOUS LOSS FOR FRANCE
>>
>HELP US, THE CRUSADERS ARE ATTACKING OUR TRADE ROUTES!
>>
>>318270647
If roads would be destructible by enemy units it seems like they would be too shitty, because they're by necessity extremely spread out. If you make only villagers able to destroy/convert them, it would mean that you'd take time out of collecting resources to do something about the road, military units do not require absolute constant activity. Plus if it's not destructible by military units it seems fair to not let it give vision, because what sort of road gives you vision
>>
>>318270880

You could give them a lot of HP so that pillaging wouldn't be so easy. Or they could be completely neutral once built and all players can use them. Vision is out of the question though in any case.
>>
>>318270593
Well, I'd say that you would build stone roads only for the more important regions, like making a quick path to the enemy base, instead of plastering the whole place with it. You could also think about making the upgrade cost scale with the number of roads built, like making it a 'upgrade all my roads to stone' button that you can use whenever you have dirt roads and castle age/whatever
And yes I was thinking about how to balance it, since roads go both ways. Do you just live with the risk of potentially giving an advantage to your enemy? Do you just let the player who built them destroy them, like regular buildings? Or do you make them converteable, similar to sheep, or only with villagers like you suggested?

Maybe lot of HP could work. Roads being neutral though would probably be too ineffective, you're already taking time out of your villagers production to create a directional, severely limited probably not all that fast speed boost and having it being able to be turned against you just gives it too many drawbacks. I mean, squires is 200 food for 10% faster infantry, applies to the entire map all of the time, can't be removed, and only takes a few moments to research. A road built at half the villager walking speed and going just to the enemy base to give what, 30% movespeed not really usable in combat? It's not an amazing effect, so it should not have very many drawbacks or ways to be negated.
>>318271193
I think villagers converting them at the same speed that they're built would be nice, it makes it fair and even, costs a villager to build, costs a villager to remove, easy to balance.

I'd still be playing that shit, hell I tossed 20 bucks at them for their stupid "pay for full faction access" shenanigans, wasn't expecting them to just go LOLGAMEOFFLINENOW THANKS FOR YOUR SHEKELS.

Fucking cunts, just make a full game and charge 30-40 bucks for it, done and done.

I hate so much that faggots who don't even play games get to make these decisions.
>>
Can you still spam stone gates instead of stone walls around your shit and watch as the enemy AI breaks trying to figure out what to do with them?
>>
>>318272918

Doesn't work with the new AI
>>
>>318272840
EA did the same thing with Battlefield Heroes and their own F2P games, pulling the plug entirely and being unable to even launch and play the game. Those games went to shit after some time, but still that's fucking irritating as they're lost forever.

Moderate 'old' AI is fucking retarded in comparison, holy shit.

Yeah the new AI is insane compared to the old one. New AI on standard is like old on hard

Yeah no shit, it was one of the few games that ran on my craptop that I really enjoyed to play when I was out of town.

Well, it would've probably been fine had we walled off, an early rush like that just wasn't in the mind.

I can beat it easily but only when I go for some feudal aggression, like towers, scouts or archers. When I try to fast castle I just get assfucked by about a million archers, skirms and spears
But I'm not very good at eco so maybe that's why
>>
>>318273664
Fastest way to gimp an AI player is to build a stone tower near their goldminers and lumberjacks, if within range of both it's even better.

Narrator and other campaign voices don't know how to pronounce anything. The male voices for units are alright, though.

because it's AoE2

what other RTS do we have that blends in townbuilding, trade, diplomacy, .etc as well? Most other RTS games focus on the war aspect too much, and Stronghold has leans towards micromanagement that it's more suited as a single-player game.

A perfect blend between AoE and Stronghold would be so nice. I want proper walls and farms that I can arrange nicely to name a couple things.

In the editor you mean? It's no Stronghold, but I used to do that all the time in the scenario editor while never thinking of it as a draw for AoE. Was I missing something besides making pointless maps in the editor with villages, castles and patrols?

Not really, even if you're skilled with the editor and go full autist, spending weeks working on the same map the most you'll get out of it is showing it off on the internet
