To be honest, I never had a NES. I started playing games on the Genesis and Game Boy. I haven't played many games on the NES because if I bother to go back and play older games, I usually stick with SNES or Genesis.
To me in seemed like the NES, along with all other consoles/computers of the time, were still finding their feet. Video games were at a strange place, and things weren't nearly as smooth, polished or well made as they became in the following generation. Major sprite limitations, color limitations, black backgrounds if you wanted big enemies, the list goes on. Just look at later SNES games compared to NES games. They were able to pump out actual 3D games on that thing, even if it needed help from a chip in the cartridge.
So, I don't think I can say what my favorite NES game is because I just haven't played enough of them. But it's Mario 3.

I love the nes because games then didn't hold your hand and assume you're a retard. I beat countless games as a child. Games that, if made now, would include words upon words of endless tutorials, forced cinematics, and pointless padding with QTEs.
Sure. They don't look as "nice" but to me, the NES us where games found their stride. A true mix of arcade gameplay and home convenience.
Games now look pretty but aren't really games. Games must have winners AND losers.
