Use lock-on and parry. The boxes have nanopaste in them and you can heal up if you zandatsu on the soldiers and gekkos he calls up.
He's really annoying if you don't know that lock-on exists, which may be your problem, so be sure to do that.

To beat his game, all you really need to learn is to parry.

It's even easier than that actually. You can just lock on, hold foward, and mash the attack button. You will parry every attack easily. It might not be a perfect parry, but you will end up damaging them without getting hit.

Here is the secret to never taking damage in MGR:
Press W, A, S, or D towards the enemy alongside each press of mouse 1 while you attack.
Congratulations you will automatically parry everything the enemy does and never die (you will still have to sidestep the unparryable attacks with 5 second telegraphs though, I'm afraid).

The keyboard was fine. Lining up precise cuts with the mouse was not.
I ended up having to cheese Armstrong's debris throws by running under them, rather than cutting through them, because I couldn't line a cut up at the right angle in time without ripper mode's help. Just as you're lining your cut up, your cut-line will randomly do a complete 180 flip. Real annoying.
