>Upgrading to Windows 10 is free for a limited time
>Yes, free! Full version of Windows 10, not a trial

So is it free for a limited time or is it the full version for free? I don't get it. I'm aware this is more of a /g/ thing, but how is Win10 for gaming? Should I even bother or just stick with 8.1?
>>
>>318170448
why are you asking this on /v/ instead of /g/?
>>
You upgrade and you have it free for life. That's it.

I wouldn't really bother upgrading yet.

It's bretty gud too. I get 10 more Fps on Fo4 now.

Because 8.1 has been working out pretty well for me thus far in terms of gaming, was just wondering if Win10 is the same deal from people who have actually upgraded. /g/ doesn't play vidya, anon. They're a bunch of fucking nerds.
>>
At the moment, you can upgrade to Win10 for free. This offer is limited in time. In other words, if you wait, you might have to buy Win10 to upgrade.
>>
>>318170448

Unless you're paranoid about Microsoft knowing you fap to incest porn, there's no reason not to upgrade from 8.1.

Who would you even want it?
Few days ago they started uninstalling user apps from PC without mentioning a word, can you really trust such company with anything.

I think there was a time when some dude got V& because he was keeping in cloud something against the law, if MS found it it means they basically scan your private shit when you upload it.

The whole thing reeks of totalitarian nightmare.

At the moment I think I'll just stick with Windows 8.1. The only thing I'm even remotely interested in for 10 is that I can make the taskbar black.

But really who gives a shit when it's a very questionable operating system.

Win 10 is just more of 8.1, big surprise. Well, 8.1 with forced updates anyway.

It's always been true for Windows licensing.

However, if you call their automated number, you can activate the new hardware no problem, even if the hardware is completely different. Of course, don't do this too many times with one license.
>>
>>318171373
they gracefully allow you to downgrade back to win 7 or 8.1, but they also automatically delete the downgrade files after a month so they'll hold your files hostage until you a) buy a full win 10 license or b) do a clean reinstall of win 7/8.1

This is the way it has always worked with OEM licenses.
And you can use your Windows key to install that and then upgrade to 10 for free
And in an incoming patch that key can be used for installing Windows 10 directly.
That is if you have a real Windows 7/8/8.1/10 key and not an OEM one.

It's not free. It costs your freedoms.
They would have to pay me to "upgrade" to Windows 10. And I'd still likely decline.

I assume they can do whatever the fuck they want as long as they put it in the licence agreement somewhere. Of course, nobody except an MS lawyer is gonna read through all that shit, so they basically get a free pass to do whatever the fuck they want without ever directly telling you.

You should worry about Microsoft spying on your local computer because they collect all info they receive to analyze piracy and market to you.

They use their own in-house marketers to target ads toward you. While the NSA, who you can't stop from spying on you, hasn't kicked down your door. Microsoft might kick down your door with lawyers if you're found with the wrong piece of pirated material.

If you care about compatibility and only compatibility, then just wait. The offer stands until July of next year. Wait until Windows 10 gets it's first service pack and becomes a respectable operating system.

It's the same deal as 7 and 8. Never install an Operating System three months out from it's launch day.

Just be sure to hide the updates in your control panel so they don't come back.

Microsoft having access is not everyone, newfag.

Consider this. Your ISP has the duty of monitoring what you browse due to legal reasons. Microsoft doesn't. And they also don't give a fuck. Do you really think Microsoft is actively monitoring what billions of computers are doing? The data being sent to them is used by machines and programs, there are no humans involved at all. I'd say they are just building a profile so ads can fit your interest, but I haven't even found a single ad yet. So I assume they just want to know their users' biggest interests or something. Point is, if you think they are selling your data to Indian perfume sellers or trying to use it to dominate the world or something, you're dumb.

This is all old news. ISPs have already shut down people's connections when they see heavy traffic to common piracy sites. Google is built upon collecting tons of info on you through browsing habits to market ads to you.

If Microsoft cared they probably wouldn't let cracked versions of their OS's sit available to download on the internet. And they're best catch for software that disables the Windows authenticater wouldn't be to just say "This might be a virus, be careful!"

Your ISP monitors what you're doing online. Microsoft is now monitoring what you do on your computer.

There's a world of difference, here. Assembling your online data is only possible if they can intercept your SSL sessions. Which I'm sure the NSA can do, but it only paints a spotty picture of what you're doing on your computer.

Microsoft wants to own your computer's local memory. This is a bad thing. For everybody.

Are you a newfag to how a ISP works or something?

For instance, if you pirate excessively, your ISP will most likely start annoying you. Because they can monitor that kind of stuff. There are no humans actively looking at what you do obviously, but they look for keywords and once they find those they send it for humans to analyze the data and confirm if it's really piracy or not. Something similar happens with criminal themes such as terrorist groups or pedostuff.

Microsoft on the other hand doesn't actively check if you are torrent and then starts sending you sad letters. They don't give a shit.

That's your network traffic, this is your local computer. There is a huge difference.

ESPECIALLY if someone cracks how the local machine spies on the user. You know, Microsoft has a keylogger built into Windows 10 now, right?

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/10/07/windows_10_data_collection/

Guess what: You can't disable it. To disable it fully, you need to turn off automatic updates, or it turns itself back on.

Imagine what would happen if someone got a hold of a keylogger? They would fucking have all of your information you ever put into the system. But microsoft hasn't had any security issues with safeguards they've built into the operating system before, right?

Here's another idea: Instead of installing an operating system that you have to uninstall countless amounts of bloatware, disable half of the OS' features, and then watch it like a hawk in case it decides to re-enable anything, you COULD instead just keep your functional version of windows which has been proven to not do that and tell any windows updates which try to backport telemetry to fuck themselves.

That's simple enough, right?

The more and more time that goes on the more people are susceptible to stupid shit such as bad software like windows 8+ because there are more young people in existence. Everyone says the younger generations are more in touch with technology but quite honestly these younger and younger generations are more out of touch with technology and don't understand the consequences of using these kinds of things. Being able to use facebook, and instagram properly on your smart phone doesn't mean you know shit about technology. They eat up anything that looks shiny and fancy that their friend's use and they don't give a fuck about what can happen on the other end of it. They don't understand the inner workings of anything they use and this lets people/groups/governments take advantage of them.

They already HAVE, that's the point. They have a keylogger there right now.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/privacystatement/
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/preview-privacy-statement

>when you input text, handwrite notes, or ink comments, we may collect samples of your input to improve these input features, (e.g., to help improve the accuracy of autocomplete and spellcheck).

>Text messages and email. Cortana accesses your messages to do a variety of things such as: allowing you to add events to your calendar, apprising you of important messages, and keeping you up to date on events or other things that are important to you, like package or flight tracking. Cortana also uses your messages to help you with planning around your events and offers other helpful suggestions and recommendations.
>Communications History. Cortana learns who is most important to you from your call, text message, and email history. This is used to keep track of people most relevant to you and your preferred methods of communication, flag important messages for you and improve other Cortana services such as speech recognition.
>Speech and Input Personalization. To help Cortana better understand the way you speak and your voice commands, speech data is sent to Microsoft to build personalized speech models and improve speech recognition and user intent understanding. On Windows devices, Cortana can only work if Input Personalization is on, so if you turn it off, Cortana will be disabled. See the Windows Input Personalization section for more information.

There it is. Your system has a keylogger in it. Microsoft owns it, and it's entirely up to them to make sure all that information they collect is secured. If not? That's tough breaks for you, my man.

They also absolve themselves of all responsibility to safeguard this information or your computer.

They can see

-Your webcam, if it works
-Your audio, if it's active
-Anything stored into local memory, including keys for password encryption and for SSH sessions
-Any text you store into local memory, which includes passwords and personal information
-The hash and file metadata of any file you open
-The file metadata of any file your operating system opens

All of it, they have it. Do you not see why this is a problem yet? Do you not know Microsoft's history on computer security?

Do you not know that one of the biggest viruses ever to hit Windows XP was because of a port they left open specifically to slip 'important updates' into computers?
>>

If a security breach takes place, all the information will be useless to the hackers.

I hope you realize that encrypting information is something done by much smaller companies. For example, VaultPass is a tiny password manager that already declares on their main website: Even if they get hacked, the hackers won't be able to do shit with the information because they can't decrypt it. Now imagine a billionaire corporation like Microsoft, do you really think they don't know how to encrypt data? If they make each key different and store part of it inside the user's computer, it'll be impossible to ever breach it.

>>318177194
Good luck sending letters to thousands of people. It's just not effective.

Are you dumb? Do you not know how how encryption works?

If you have a keylogger on your system, and hackers extract the key needed to communicate with it, then those hackers have control of that keylogger.

It's as simple as that. One zero-day and the 'helpful' spyware microsoft installed is now malicious, and there's no turning it off.

>"Windows 10 will periodically send data to a Microsoft server named ssw.live.com. This server seems to be used for OneDrive and some other Microsoft services. Windows 10 seems to transmit information to the server even when OneDrive is disabled and logins are using a local account that isn't connected to a Microsoft Account. How the fuck are the hackers going to take control of Microsoft's keylogger? Microsoft are the ones hosting it, the data is being sent to Microsoft, it's impossible to just hijack it.

Now, something possible (and what I assume you are suggesting) is hijacking the keylogger program itself of a specific user and having it send information to the hackers. Thing is:

a) If it was that easy to do, people would have already hijacked the keylogger to disable it entirely. It's impossible though and seems to be related to W10's very structure.
b) Can still be fixed by making the keylogger encrypt data as it extracts said data, and then having Microsoft decrypt it as it arrives on their own servers. So the hacker would be forced to hack both the user AND Microsoft servers.

>How the fuck are the hackers going to take control of Microsoft's keylogger? Microsoft are the ones hosting it, the data is being sent to Microsoft, it's impossible to just hijack it.

If something's being sent over the internet it's hackable, regardless of how secure people claim it is. And if there's a way in to your PC to monitor it by a third party, then that's an insecure access point into your PC.

It's exactly the same argument people are making against those politicians pushing for backdoors to encryption on smartphones and such; you can't have a "secure backdoor" to an encryption; if there's a backdoor at ALL, it's inherently insecure.

I'm not saying it's particularly likely or anything but it is possible and given that it's totally unnecessary to have it there in the first place, it's a fairly big design flaw for the end-user. It's not like windows has a 100% record in security to begin with, and now they're poking holes in what little security they do have.

It doesn't matter what data is being sent. The issue is that its sending any data at all, despite being told not to.

I downloaded a program that disabled/uninstalled all the botnet shit, but I don't actually know if it made a difference or not.

But I actually like Windows 10, it runs a lot better than 7 for me anyway.

There's no lobbying group fighting porn piracy.

Pirate enough movies and music though, and the RIAA and MPAA will be after you.

I don't really care about Microsoft spying on me. My wife's son is a good kid and he only uses the PC to play games and do homework.

Feels good raising the next generation of the master race.

>How the fuck are the hackers going to take control of Microsoft's keylogger? Microsoft are the ones hosting it, the data is being sent to Microsoft, it's impossible to just hijack it.

You clearly don't know much about how computers work. I'll try to make this simple as I can.

The keylogger isn't on microsoft's servers, it does them no good there. It's on YOUR COMPUTER. In your local memory, reading the keys that you type in.

Local memory is what Microsoft is spying on as well. See, reading memory that is 'local' by a program that's not authorized to view it is known as a 'Local Access Violation'. This is typically referred to as 'reading (or) writing to arbitrary memory locations'.

That keylogger is in your computer's memory right now, reading your keystrokes and sending them to microsoft. If a computer hacker finds a vulnerability on your system that lets them read arbitrary memory locations, you're fucked. They basically own any information that keylogger reads. And you saved them the step of having to get it installed on your system by installing one yourself.

And in case you think this doesn't happen often: Let's look at all the vulnerabilities Windows has regarding access violations

https://www.cvedetails.com/vulnerability-list/vendor_id-26/product_id-739/Microsoft-Windows-Xp.html

https://www.cvedetails.com/vulnerability-list/vendor_id-26/product_id-17153/hasexp-1/Microsoft-Windows-7.html

https://www.cvedetails.com/vulnerability-list/vendor_id-26/product_id-22318/Microsoft-Windows-8.html

Look at those lists, friend. Multiple vulnerabilities there, dozens, even hundreds. From every operating system that predates windows 10. Many of them deal with methods used to get local memory access on your machine.

It just takes one of those to compromise your system now. All because you installed the malware yourself. Enjoy.

>people actually think Microsoft is giving away a free upgrade out of the goodness of their heart
They'll get their fucking money out of you somehow, whether it's from all the data they're stealing or something else down the line, they'll make back their development costs and then some.

Arguing that you don't care about the right to privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you don't care about free speech because you have nothing to say

>I'm not even going to ask a source for this one. Not sure how people can be this retarded.

Not the same guy but I once uploaded a cracked APK file to my dropbox and it wouldn't let me download the file on my phone because it violated some copyright law. I didn't get V& but don't think MS and other Cloud providers won't check the shit you put on it.

We've been over this, yes they do.

It's there, right now.

so you admit you're getting upset for no reason. For all you know it's just caching app data or sending basic (aka non invasive and generally helpful) telemetry data
>>
>>318177883
Again, you're confusing local memory with things sent over the internet.

See >>318177501

Where do you think that keylogger on your computer stores your keystrokes before it sends it to MS?

No. No data.

What if I don't want this added "convenience"? Ive been using a computer for decades now and have done just fine without these stupid features. Surely there isn't some other motive behind adding them

isn't it only free until jul 2016? as in past then even users with w10 have to pay?

Whether or not a keylogger exists on your computer, if a hacker can read an arbitrary memory location they could read your keys anyways
